BACKGROUND: The SUMOylation modification is closely linked to the progression of fibrotic diseases, yet its role in hepatic fibrosis associated with cystic echinococcosis (CE) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the function of SUMOylation in CE-related hepatic fibrosis and evaluate the anti-fibrotic effects and mechanisms of ginkgolic acid (GA) via regulation of the SUMOylation pathway.
METHODOLOGY: Peri-lesional (PL) and adjacent normal (AN) liver tissues from CE patients were collected to examine histopathology and SUMO pathway proteins. A CE-infected mouse model was establish

Hydatid disease (HD) is a zoonotic parasitic infection caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. It remains a major public health issue in many countries, including Türkiye. Diagnosis relies on clinical findings, serological tests, and radiological methods. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test and radiological imaging in suspected HD cases. In this retrospective study, patients with suspected HD between July 2023 and June 2024 were included. Serum samples were tested using the IHA method, and ultrasonography (US), comput

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus commonly affects the liver and remains a health burden in endemic regions. Infected hepatic hydatid cysts with occult cystobiliary communication are particularly challenging to manage in children, where evidence is scarce. This case is notable for demonstrating the feasibility and safety of laparoscopic management in such a complex pediatric presentation.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a case of a Yemeni 12-year-old male individual from a rural area presenting with a 5-year history of progressive right hypochondrial pain,

BACKGROUND: Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) is a severe zoonotic parasitic disease for which ultrasonography is the primary diagnostic tool. However, the heterogeneous imaging characteristics of HAE lesions present significant challenges to accurate diagnosis. To improve diagnostic reliability, this study compared the performance of two established ultrasound classification systems: the Echinococcus multilocularis National Health Commission Classification-Ultrasound (EMNHCC-US) and the E. multilocularis Ulm Classification-Ultrasound (EMUC-US).
RESULTS: This study compared EMUC-US and EM

INTRODUCTION: Hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus is a major health problem in endemic regions. Hepatic cysts may mimic simple cysts or neoplasms, creating diagnostic challenges. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) provides a rapid diagnosis, but its role remains debated due to variable sensitivity and concerns regarding safety.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 15 patients with hepatic and hepatobiliary cystic lesions evaluated in our pathology department over a 5-year period. Fourteen patients underwent ultrasound-guided FNAC, and 1 patient had an incidental retroperiton

BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), a lethal zoonosis caused by Echinococcus multilocularis (E.m) infection, is characterized by immune exhaustion that facilitates parasite evasion of host immunity and sustains chronic infection. The role and mechanisms of Interleukin-22 (IL-22), a key immunomodulatory cytokine, in E.m-induced immune responses remain unclear and warrant investigation.
METHODS: Liver tissue samples from AE patients and E.m-infected mouse models were utilized to investigate IL-22 expression dynamics during AE progression and its correlation with disease progression. Recom

BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a serious zoonotic parasitic disease. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying the formation of the dense fibrotic band surrounding hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) lesions, which impedes chemotherapeutic drug penetration. Additionally, the roles of Interleukin-33 (IL-33) and eosinophils in the progression of fibrosis within this band were examined.
METHODS: IL-33/suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST-2) expression levels were compared between patients with HAE and healthy controls, as well as between close to lesion tissues (CLT

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by Echinococcus multilocularis(E. multilocularis) infection, is a severe parasitic disease characterized by progressive liver fibrosis. Although the damage-associated molecular pattern molecule S100A9 has been implicated in some inflammatory and fibrotic diseases, its role in AE induced liver fibrosis remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the function and mechanism of S100A9 in E. multilocularis induced liver fibrogenesis. Using proteomic analysis, we identified significant up-regulation of S100A9 in the livers of infected mice. In a stem cell-base

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst disease of the liver remains a significant public health problem in endemic regions. While surgical treatment has traditionally been the mainstay of therapy, minimally invasive percutaneous approaches have emerged as safe and effective alternatives, especially for selected World Health Organization (WHO) cystic echinococcosis (CE) 1 and CE3a cysts. Comparative data on efficacy, complication rates, and clinical outcomes between the two methods are essential for guiding optimal treatment selection.
AIM: To compare and evaluate the efficacy, safety, complication rates, a

Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE), a life-threatening zoonosis, poses formidable surgical challenges when involving critical vasculature. Herein, we reported the periprocedural management dilemmas in radical resection for advanced HAE. A 58-year-old female visited the outpatient department presented with HAE. Imaging examination revealed extensive invasion of the hilum, bile duct, and several hepatic vessels, as well as left adrenal metastasis. The patient underwent right trisegmentectomy with left hepatic vein reconstruction, auto-transplantation, and adrenalectomy, with intraoperative Do

PURPOSE: To establish a new hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) model, construct an EPC1 antibody-conjugated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) molecular probe and evaluate the probe's efficacy in the targeted MRI of HAE.
METHODS: Thirty C57 female mice (9-10 weeks; 17-22g) were used to establish an HAE model via hepatic portal vein infection. Twenty successfully HAE-modeled mice were randomly divided into a control group, which was given a simple SPION tracer, and an experimental group, which was given a complex SPION-EPC1 tracer. In addition, a blocking group (n = 5), in wh

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint molecules such as lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG3) play a critical role in modulating host-pathogen interactions during chronic parasitic infections; however, their functions in early infection remain poorly defined. Using a murine model infected with Echinococcus multilocularis (E. multilocularis), a lethal helminth causing alveolar echinococcosis (AE), we elucidate the stage-specific regulatory functions of LAG3 in CD4+ T cell immunity during early infection.
METHODS: Echinococcus multilocularis-infected mice were employed as the experimental model. Flow cyt

Alveolar echinococcosis is a significant zoonotic disease characterized by infiltrative growth of metacestodes in intermediate hosts. It is primarily located in the liver and is associated with a high mortality rate if left untreated. To the authors' knowledge, the present report describes the first case of alveolar echinococcosis in a pregnant dog documented in the literature.A five-year-old, unneutered female Labrador Retriever was presented shortly after artificial insemination with abdominal distension, polydipsia, and polyuria. Further examinations led to the diagnosis of alveolar echinoc

Alveolar echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, poses a serious public health concern. This parasite requires rodents as intermediate hosts for protoscolex maturation in the liver and subsequent transmission to definitive hosts. We aimed to identify the host genetic factors controlling protoscolex development and maturation in congenic mice carrying susceptible DBA/2 genomic segments on a resistant C57BL/6N background. We assessed the hepatic protoscoleces and immune-related gene expression levels 16 weeks post-oral infection. All congenic strains developed protoscoleces; howev

Echinococcus multilocularis (E. m) infection causes alveolar echinococcosis (AE), a serious zoonotic disease characterized by invasive larval growth in the liver. The parasite establishes a chronic infection, suggesting effective modulation of host immunity. Here, we investigated the role of the CCR8/CCL1 chemokine axis in shaping the hepatic immune microenvironment during E.m infection. In infected wild-type (WT) mice, chronic infection specifically activated the hepatic CCR8/CCL1 axis, which was associated with a marked accumulation of FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs). Notably, although CCR

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis is a widespread zoonosis caused by the proliferation of the larval stage of Echinoccocus granulosus, which leads to the formation of cysts. In 75% of cases, there is a single cyst, which mostly affects the liver and the lungs. Disseminated forms are exceptional, and their treatment is complex and non-standardized. There are currently four therapeutic strategies. The indication for each strategy depends on several factors, including the number and stage of the cysts.
CASE REPORT: We reported the case of a 24-year-old woman, suffering from a multivisceral dis

BACKGROUND Hydatid disease, a parasitic zoonotic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is characterized by the formation of cysts in various organs. Transmission occurs via the fecal-oral route. The disease is endemic in regions where livestock farming is common, including rural areas of the Mediterranean, Africa, the Middle East, and South America. The liver and lungs are the most commonly affected organs, with reported involvement rates of 50% to 70% and 20% to 30%, respectively. In rare cases, cardiac involvement occurs (0.5%-2%), most frequently affecting the left ventricle due to i
