Anaphylaxis Mimicking Severe Croup in Pediatric Patients: A Case Series.

Acute stridor is frequently equated with croup in pediatric contexts; however, other conditions, such as anaphylaxis, may present with remarkably similar clinical and radiographic characteristics. This article presents two pediatric cases of acute stridor initially managed as croup but ultimately diagnosed and treated as anaphylaxis induced by seafood ingestion. Both patients experienced recovery following the administration of intramuscular adrenaline. These cases underscore the necessity for increased vigilance and comprehensive history-taking when evaluating pediatric acute stridor. Identif

Neuroblastoma in neonates: a case report and literature review.

Neuroblastoma in neonates is a rare solid tumor. This report presents two rare cases of cervical neuroblastoma, both characterized by stridor and coughing during feeding due to tumor compression. The first case of neuroblastoma presented with an intact capsule, allowing for complete surgical resection with preservation of the cervical vasculature and nerves. In contrast, although preoperative MRI indicated an intact capsule in the second case, the intraoperative findings revealed no discernible capsule formation and involvement of both the internal and external carotid arteries. None of the tw

Effects of different pneumoperitoneum pressures on the upper airway assessed by ultrasonography: a prospective, randomized, observer-blinded clinical study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of low-pressure (10 mmHg) and standard-pressure (14 mmHg) pneumoperitoneum on upper airway dimensions during laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed in the reverse Trendelenburg position, using bedside ultrasonography. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, observer-blinded study, 76 ASA I–II patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy were allocated to either 10 mmHg or 14 mmHg pneumoperitoneum. Upper airway parameters—including lateral pharyngeal wall (LPW) thickness, tongue thickness and width, parapharyngeal tissue thickn

Case Report: Treatment of hypersomatotropism in a diabetic dog with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy.

BACKGROUND: Pituitary somatotroph adenoma is rare in dogs and may cause hypersomatotropism (HS) leading to insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus (DM). CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-year-5-month-old neutered male Staffordshire Bull Terrier presented with polyuria, polydipsia, progressive inspiratory stridor, and poorly controlled DM with hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance. Serum insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) was markedly elevated (1,214 ng/mL; reference interval, 42-449 ng/mL) and suggested HS which was further supported by a somatostatin suppression test. Magnetic resonance and computed

Acute Laryngeal Dystonia Following Haloperidol Administration: Early Recognition Prevents Intubation.

Acute laryngeal dystonia (ALD) is a rare but potentially fatal extrapyramidal adverse effect of high-dose antipsychotic medications like haloperidol. It presents with sudden contraction of laryngeal muscles that causes narrowing of the airway, which rapidly progresses to respiratory failure if not promptly recognized. We report a 45-year-old male patient with schizophrenia who developed respiratory distress and inspiratory stridor within 15 minutes of receiving haloperidol for postoperative agitation following emergent abdominal surgery. Initial management with epinephrine failed to improve sy

A Retrospective Study of Outcomes of Surgical Management of Severe Laryngomalacia.

BACKGROUND: Laryngomalacia is the most common cause of congenital stridor in infants. While most cases are mild and self-limiting, some develop severe disease requiring surgical intervention due to airway obstruction, feeding difficulties, or failure to thrive. This study evaluates the outcomes of surgical management for severe laryngomalacia at a tertiary care pediatric center. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 56 children with severe laryngomalacia who underwent surgery between January 2013 and January 2023. Patients with secondary airway lesions or significant comorbidities

Growth Hormone-Induced Stridor in a Patient With Prader-Willi Syndrome.

While growth hormone therapy has been associated with the potential risk of upper airway obstruction and hypertrophy, it may also cause glottic or subglottic edema and stridor, even in patients without adenotonsillar tissue. Clinicians should consider medication-induced airway changes in Prader-Willi Syndrome patients with complex airway histories to optimize management.

Clinical characteristics of Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in children with atopic constitution and risk factors for disease severity: a retrospective comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical characteristics and immune-inflammatory markers between Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia children with and without atopic constitution, and to identify independent risk factors for severe MPP within the atopic group. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 377 children diagnosed with MPP at Wuhan Children's Hospital between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2024, who underwent allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) testing for both inhalant and food allergens. The children were divided into two groups based on their atopic constitution:

Acquired Subglottic Cyst in a Premature Infant Following Recurrent Intubation: A Case Report.

Acquired subglottic cysts are retention cysts that develop as a consequence of iatrogenic trauma to the subglottic mucosa. They are most commonly observed in neonates with a history of prematurity and repeated endotracheal intubation. These cysts may lead to nonspecific symptoms of airway obstruction, such as persistent stridor. We present the case of a premature infant born at 26 weeks of gestation who developed an acquired subglottic cyst following multiple episodes of intubation for recurrent respiratory distress. After persistent respiratory symptoms and an unsuccessful attempt at bronchos

Idiopathic Upper Tracheal Stenosis Presenting With Progressive Stridor Managed by Endoscopic Balloon Dilatation: A Case Report.

Idiopathic subglottic and upper tracheal stenosis is an uncommon cause of progressive airway obstruction, predominantly affecting middle-aged women. We report the case of a female patient who presented with progressive stridor at rest over 12 months, without antecedent airway instrumentation or systemic disease. Flexible nasoendoscopy demonstrated irregular subglottic mucosa with airway narrowing, and computed tomography confirmed a 1.5 cm segment of circumferential mucosal thickening resulting in significant luminal compromise. Comprehensive autoimmune screening was negative, supporting an id

Prediction of post-extubation stridor using ultrasound measurement of subglottic airway diameter.

BACKGROUND: Post-extubation stridor (PES) is a common complication in children in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Despite the evaluation of various predictive tests, no single method has consistently demonstrated strong predictive value for PES. We evaluated the diagnostic utility of subglottic diameter ultrasonography for predicting PES within 48-h post-extubation in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The prospective observational study in university-affiliated PICU was done in children aged 1 month to 15 years who successfully passed a spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) and were sched

Delayed-Onset and Prolonged Laryngeal Edema Following Pyrethroid Insecticide Poisoning: A Case Report.

Pyrethroid insecticides are generally considered to have low mammalian toxicity; however, severe toxicity may occur following high-dose or intentional ingestion. Pyrethroids are classified into two types, Type Ⅰ and Type Ⅱ, with permethrin belonging to Type Ⅰ, which is typically associated with tremor. Laryngeal edema associated with pyrethroid poisoning has been rarely reported and is usually acute and self-limited. We report a case of delayed-onset and prolonged laryngeal edema following permethrin ingestion that required extended airway management and tracheostomy. A 73-year-old woman attem

Recurrent Pediatric Upper Tracheal Stenosis Stabilized with a Montgomery Airway Stent: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric post-intubation upper tracheal stenosis is uncommon but clinically important. High cervical lesions near the vocal cords are especially challenging because of recurrence risk and poor tolerance of airway stents. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old boy developed progressive dyspnea and inspiratory stridor over four months after a motor vehicle accident requiring endotracheal intubation for seven days. On presentation, respiratory rate was 26 breaths/min, oxygen saturation was 92-93% on room air, and stridor was present at rest. Rigid bronchoscopy demonstrated a 2-cm Myer-Cot

Parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding laryngomalacia in Saudi Arabia: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Laryngomalacia (LM) is the most common cause of infant stridor, significantly impacting the quality of life for both patients and caregivers. Early recognition by parents is crucial to reducing morbidity and anxiety. However, parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding LM remain underexplored in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2024 to July 2025 among parents residing in Saudi Arabia with at least one child aged ≥6 months. A validated, self-administered questionnaire assessed sociodemographics, knowledge, attitu

Congenital vallecular cyst presenting with persistent stridor and feeding difficulty since the neonatal period: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital vallecular cysts are rare but potentially life-threatening causes of upper airway obstruction in infants. They typically present with persistent stridor and feeding difficulty and may be misdiagnosed as laryngomalacia, delaying definitive management. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-month-old male presented with persistent stridor and feeding difficulty since birth. Computed tomography of the neck revealed a cystic lesion at the base of the tongue, causing airway narrowing. Flexible laryngoscopy confirmed a vallecular cyst. The patient underwent surgical marsupia

Acquired subglottic stenosis in children younger than 1 year in a resource-restricted hospital in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Subglottic stenosis (SGS) is a congenital or acquired condition and is the most common site of airway narrowing in children. The pathogenesis of SGS includes subglottic mucosal pressure necrosis, leading to mucosal ulceration, perichondritis and mature scar formation. Acquired SGS accounts for 90% of laryngotracheal stenosis in children. OBJECTIVES: To describe the associated disease factors, management and outcomes of infants with acquired SGS in a middle-income country. METHODS: A retrospective, descriptive study was performed between January 2018 and August 2022, including all
