BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hydatid disease is common in endemic regions, yet bilateral giant cysts in toddlers are exceptionally rare and may mimic severe pneumonia. Their management is challenging, particularly in physiologically vulnerable children.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 32-month-old girl presenting with fever, progressive cough, and severe respiratory distress. Imaging revealed four large pulmonary hydatid cysts-three in the left lung and one in the right-complicated by superimposed bacterial infection and hypoxemia. Albendazole therapy (15 mg/kg/day) was initiated, and a risk-adapted,

Cystic echinococcosis is an endemic parasitic disease in Morocco, characterized by cystic lesions, most commonly in the liver or lungs, with lesions in other locations being less common. We report the case of a 38-year-old woman presenting with chronic pain and swelling in her left thigh. An ultrasound of the thigh revealed a multilocular mass located on the posteromedial aspect of the thigh. An MRI of the left thigh showed a multilocular subfascial cystic mass containing multiple fluid-filled vesicles and a sinuous hypointense membrane (serpent sign). An MRI of the thoracolumbar spine and an

Surgery is the preferable treatment of thoracic cystic echinococcosis (TCE). However, there is no consensus about the best surgical method. Options include lobectomy, segmentectomy, or cystostomy with closure of bronchial openings and capitonnage. The choice depends on cyst integrity, cyst size, number of cysts, location of cysts within the lung, associated lung tissue damage, and treatment costs. Currently, limited data are available on the costs associated with surgical treatment of TCE. We report data from a referral center for TCE in Italy. We collected treatment information and costs for

BACKGROUND: While socioeconomic status (SES) indicators such as educational attainment and employment are among the major drivers of health and illness, the health returns of SES indicators may differ across racial groups. Built on Marginalization related Diminished Returns framework (MDRs) that refers to weaker health effects of SES indicators for marginalized and minoritized groups than non-Hispanic White people, we conducted this study with two aims: First to test the association between educational attainment and employment with cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), and second, to test racial v

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is caused by the parasite Leishmania donovani and transmitted by the bite of the sand fly vector Phlebotomus. This disease is endemic in the Bihar region of India. There are three common forms of the disease - cutaneous, mucosal and visceral leishmaniasis. The most common presentation of this disease is prolonged unexplained fever with hepatosplenomegaly.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report an unusual case of pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) in a patient who was extensively worked up for PUO. She was found to have low CD4 counts even though serial samples were negative for HI

AIMS: The development of synchronous diffuse malignant mesothelioma and carcinoma in individuals exposed to asbestos is rare. We report nine cases and discuss the medico-legal implications.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Five hundred patients seeking compensation for asbestos-related diffuse malignant mesothelioma were reviewed with access to post-mortem data. The study group comprised cases in which a second (non-mesothelial) neoplasm was identified. The study group comprised eight males, one female, mean age 68 years (range 60-75). All individuals gave a history of asbestos exposure. Synchronous mali

BACKGROUND: : Azathioprine and mercaptopurine are commonly used in chronic active Crohn's disease. They share the disadvantage of a delayed onset of action and potentially serious side-effects, and are metabolized to thioguanine nucleotides which are thought to be the active metabolites. The direct use of 6-thioguanine may offer a more rapid and safer alternative. We conducted an open prospective study to investigate the efficacy and safety of 6-thioguanine in chronic active Crohn's disease.
METHODS: : Thirty-seven patients with chronic active Crohn's disease and a Crohn's disease activity in

BACKGROUND: Stachybotrys chartarum is a damp building mould and a potent toxin producer that has been related to serious cases of respiratory health problems. However, the direct link between exposure and health symptoms has not been established.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the mechanism by which exposure to spores of satratoxin producing and non-producing S. chartarum strains induce inflammatory responses in murine lungs.
METHODS: BALB/c mice were intranasally exposed for 3 weeks to spores of a satratoxin-producing and a non-producing S. chartarum strain. Inflammatory cell infiltration was charac

INTRODUCTION: Echinococcosis is a helminthic infection caused by cestodes of the genus Echinococcus (e.g., E. granulosus, E. multilocularis). Infection is typically acquired by accidental ingestion of Echinococcus eggs, which are shed in the feces of infected dogs. Infection results in cystic lesions in the liver (75% of cases), lungs (15% of cases) and, rarely, other organs.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report here a case of a bilateral pulmonary hydatid cyst in a 19-year-old female with endo-rupture of the cyst in the right upper lobe. The patient presented with a history of longstanding dry cough

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the regulatory mechanism by which the acidic microenvironment modulates LAMC2 expression in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to elucidate its roles in tumor cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and associated signaling pathways, thereby providing a theoretical foundation for targeted lung cancer therapies.
METHODS: A cohort of 104 pathologically confirmed NSCLC patients treated at a designated hospital from January 2018 to December 2021 was enrolled. RNA-seq data from the TCGA database were analyzed to evaluate LAMC2 expression differences a

Hydatid cyst disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, primarily affects the liver and lungs, while cardiac involvement, especially the right atrium (RA), is extremely rare. We report the case of a 21-year-old woman who presented with massive haemoptysis and hypoxemia. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated a large multicystic mass occupying the RA cavity, adherent to the atrial wall and interatrial septum, strongly suggestive of a hydatid cyst. Chest computed tomography angiography confirmed multiple pulmonary cystic lesions, intravascular filling defects consistent with pulmonary embo

Cystic echinococcosis, caused by the two zoonotic cestodes Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus canadensis, is emerging in new regions of the United States and Canada. In January 2026, an adult female hunter-harvested white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from Pennsylvania, USA exhibited pulmonary hydatid cysts. Morphologic identification of metacestodes in cystic fluid and subsequent PCR and sequencing confirmed this deer was infected with Echinococcus canadensis G8. Although E. canadensis commonly infects cervids at northern latitudes, recent infections in definitive wild canid host

Pulmonary hydatid disease is uncommon in children and may present diagnostic difficulties, particularly when serology is negative. We report a 10-year-old boy from an endemic rural area who was incidentally found to have three giant pulmonary cysts involving both lungs. Despite negative Echinococcus serology, radiologic features were highly suggestive of hydatid disease. The patient underwent staged bilateral thoracoscopic endocystectomy with capitonnage following albendazole therapy. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, with complete radiological reso

Pulmonary hydatid disease is an uncommon manifestation of Echinococcus granulosus infection in non-endemic regions and presents diagnostic challenges due to variable clinical and radiological features. We report a four-case series of pulmonary hydatid cysts from a tertiary center in the UAE. Presentations included hemoptysis, pneumonia-like illness with cavitary lesions mimicking malignancy, ruptured cysts with multi-organ involvement, and an incidentally detected large cyst. Diagnosis was established by imaging, supported by bronchoscopy, serology, and histopathology when indicated. Managemen

BACKGROUND & AIM: Pulmonary echinococcosis, or pulmonary hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus larvae, presents a significant health challenge, particularly in endemic areas. While surgery is the primary treatment for viable cysts, the optimal approach for this remains under debate. There is a lack of comparative evidence comparing traditional open thoracic surgery (OTS) with minimally invasive video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to comprehensively compare the efficacy and safety of VATS versus OTS for pulmonary hydatid disease; it will expan

BACKGROUND: Giant pulmonary hydatid cysts (GHCs), defined as cysts measuring ≥10 cm, pose significant surgical challenges owing to their large size and distortion of the native lung architecture, which often limits the effectiveness of conventional capitonnage. This study evaluates the feasibility and early clinical outcomes of a novel closed-book parenchyma-sparing technique designed to achieve complete residual cavity obliteration while preserving functional lung parenchyma.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 12 consecutive patients with GHCs who underwent surgery between Se

INTRODUCTION: Giant pulmonary hydatid cysts are uncommon and may cause profound cardiopulmonary compromise through chronic lung compression and mediastinal displacement. Their surgical removal can be complicated by abrupt hemodynamic and respiratory deterioration.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old woman from a rural livestock-raising region presented with progressive dyspnea, cough, and right-sided chest pain. Imaging demonstrated a solitary giant pulmonary cyst measuring approximately 40 × 25 × 25 cm, occupying almost the entire right hemithorax and markedly displacing the mediastinum. Serolo
