This case report describes the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of a 13-year-old boy with pulmonary cystic echinococcosis. The patient presented with low-volume hemoptysis, and lung imaging revealed a large cystic mass, as well as smaller pseudo-nodular lesions, suggesting a large intrathoracic hydatid cyst and ruptured cysts. The diagnosis was confirmed by a positive echinococcosis Western Blot assay, despite equivocal serology. The treatment consisted of surgical removal of the large cyst using thoracoscopy, along with a two-week course of albendazole and praziquantel, followed by albe

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis is non-endemic in Denmark and primarily diagnosed in migrants from endemic areas. Here, we report a case of pulmonary cystic echinococcosis in a Danish woman with no history of longer-term stays abroad, only holiday travelling to tourist destinations. This is the first case reported in international literature from Denmark where the causative parasite was identified to species and genotype level.
CASE: A 27-year-old pregnant Danish woman was admitted for examination because of haemoptysis for three months.Chest X-ray and computed tomography revealed a cystic

An uncommon clinical case of an adult woman who was referred to the hospital with severe symptoms attributable to cystic echinococcosis (CE) is described in this report. According to a questionnaire, the subject was exposed to a high risk of infection since she was employed on a farm about 20 years before diagnosis. She lived close to several animal species and handled vegetables in inadequate hygienic conditions. Medical and laboratory investigations confirmed the presence of massive echinococcal cystic lesions in each lung and in the liver. Given the peculiarity of the case, pharmacological

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic disease endemic in developing regions. It is usually caused by infection with the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus due to contaminated food or drinks or by close contact with dogs. The lungs are the second most affected organ (25%) after the liver (>65%). Cyst rupture is the most frequent complication. Enlarging pulmonary cysts are more vulnerable to rupture, with rupturing in the bronchial tree being the most common (20%-40%). Hydropneumothorax is a consequence of complete cyst rupture into the pleural cavity and occurs in rare cases (2%-4%). Superinfection is a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of our review is to summarize specific clinical, diagnostic and treatment aspects of pulmonary cystic echinococcosis. The lung is the organ second most affected by cystic echinococcosis with approximately a quarter of cystic echinococcosis cysts. Most cysts are in the liver. Apart from the watch and wait approach for selected inactive cysts [cystic echinococcosis CE4, CE5], the well established WHO cystic echinococcosis cyst classification-based treatment of hepatic cystic echinococcosis cannot be applied to pulmonary cystic echinococcosis cysts. Some standard interv

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cysts are most frequently located in the liver and lungs and very rarely can be found in the pericardium. Diagnosis and treatment are quite challenging, as the disease can present itself in many forms depending to the location and the complications that it might cause.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old man presented to our hospital with ongoing dry cough for more than 1 month prior to admission. Other symptoms included chest pain, fatigue, low grade fever, and night sweats, which have worsened in the past 2 weeks. Physical examination revealed normal respiratory and heart f

Human cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disorder triggered by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) and predominantly occurred in the liver and lungs. The M2 macrophage level is considerably elevated among the liver of patients with hepatic CE and performs an integral function in liver fibrosis. However, the mechanism of CE inducing polarisation of macrophage to an M2 phenotype is unknown. In this study, macrophage was treated with E. granulosus cyst fluid (EgCF) to explore the mechanism of macrophage polarisation. Consequently, the expression of the M2 macrophage

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Hydatid cysts are a parasitic disease that occurs when humans ingest contaminated food or water containing parasitic eggs. It is a common disease worldwide, especially in cattle breeding areas. In rare cases, the primary cysts contain daughter cysts inside them, as seen in this case.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 28-year-old rural woman who presented with a history of sputum-producing cough, dyspnea, hemoptysis, and pain in the right side of the chest. The chest-abdomen-pelvis MSCT revealed a large number of cysts (more than 200 cysts) with daughter cysts inside

Conservative treatment of human hydatidosis (cystic echinococcosis) with albendazole has improved significantly the prognosis of the disease. But its therapeutic effectiveness is 30 - 70 %. There is some evidence that the effectiveness of albendazole can be enhanced by praziquantel but there is no strict recommendation for the use of praziquantel as part of long-term drug therapy for hydatidosis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the combination of albendazole and praziquantel in patients with hepatic and/or pulmonary hydatidosis. A total of 20 patients (aged 12 - 70 ye

Human echinococcosis is a common zoonotic disease. Due to favourable climatic conditions, India contributes to the majority of the burden of cystic echinococcosis (CE) in the world. The lung is the most commonly affected organ in the body, after the liver. Common symptoms of pulmonary hydatid cyst (PHC) include cough, chest pain, expectoration, and hemoptysis. This case report is a rare presentation of hydatid disease of the thoracic cavity with complaints of upper limb neuropathic pain. Radiological investigation showed an extrapleural thoracic cyst compressing the brachial plexus, and serolo

BACKGROUND: Previous studies found that the use of probiotics may have a protective effect on chemotherapy-associated toxicity in cancer patients. A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the effect of probiotics and synbiotics on chemoradiotherapy-associated toxicity in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients.
METHODS: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed to assess the effect of probiotics and synbiotics in CRC patients undergoing chemotherapy. All RCTs in English, up to January 2021, were included through a literature search in Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMe

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing pneumonia is rare in children and is one of the most serious complications of a lung infection caused by antibiotic failure. We present a 12-year-old leukopenic child with a long-lasting lung infection, presenting as having a lung hydatid cyst, but diagnosing with necrotizing pneumonia in the right bilobed lung. Failure to medical treatment and ongoing leukopenia justified surgical intervention with positive results.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was referred to our teaching hospital's pediatric surgery department. He had previously been diagnosed with intestinal tube

Hydatid cyst (Hydatidosis) is considered one of the parasitic diseases that pose a threat to both animals and humans alike. Objectives: the present study was aimed to investigate cystic echinococcosis in sheep. By employing a variety of specific stains, we sought to uncover the mesmerizing histochemical changes associated with this condition. Twenty lung samples infected with hydatid disease were obtained. The samples were fixed in 10% formalin and processed and then stained with haematoxylin and eosin and some special stains such as Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS), Gomri's aldehyde fuschin, Best C

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a severe parasitic infection caused by the ingestion of Echinococcus multilocularis eggs. While higher incidence and faster evolution have been reported in immunosuppressed patients, no studies have been performed specifically on AE in transplant patients. We searched for all de novo AE cases diagnosed between January 2008 and August 2018 in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients included in the Swiss Transplant Cohort Study and the FrancEchino Registry. Eight cases were identified (kidney = 5, lung = 2, heart = 1, liver = 0), half of which were asymptomatic at

Echinococcosis is considered a neglected disease in most European countries. However, migratory flows of populations, long-term stays in endemic areas, uninterrupted tourism (travel to Echinococcus-endemic countries), traveling dogs and dog translocations from endemic areas, and inappropriate hygiene practices are potential factors that alarm public health officials. Identifying a cyst-like mass in the liver or lung of an individual with a travel history of likely exposure to sheepdogs in an area where the parasite Echinococcus (E.) granulosus (sive cysticus) is endemic advocates for a prompt

The tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis is an emerging pathogen of significance to human and animal health in Canada, yet little is known about key rodent intermediate hosts in local urban ecosystems. In Europe, invasive muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) are an important indicator intermediate host species; however, the role of this semiaquatic rodent in the ecology of E. multilocularis is undetermined in the North American context. We examined 93 muskrats that were livetrapped in the spring of 2017 within Calgary, Alberta, Canada, for the presence of E. multilocularis infection. The objectives o
