Human hydatidosis is a parasitic infection by the larval stages of the Echinococcus (E.) that rarely occurs in pregnancy (1/20, 000-30 000). Canines are the definitive host while humans are the accidental host. They most often affect the liver (60%) and lungs (30%). E. granulosus causes cystic echinococcosis and is the most frequent form. E. multilocularis causes alveolar echinococcosis and is becoming increasingly more common. E. infections often remain asymptomatic for years before the cysts grow large enough to cause symptoms. Hepatic and pulmonary signs and symptoms are the most common cli

BACKGROUND: The organ most commonly invaded in echinococcosis is the liver; the lungs, brain, kidneys, heart, and spleen are rarely invaded, and multi-organ involvement in echinococcosis is even rarer. No studies have reported renal invasion after liver transplantation for hepatic alveolar echinococcosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report here a case of renal invasion 2 years after allogeneic liver transplantation in a 53-year-old female patient with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis combined with lung metastases. At the time of the first consultation, the lesion had been found to involve the second

INTRODUCTION: Cystic hydatidosis is a parasitic infection caused by the organism Echinococcus Granulosus that is well known to be endemic in the Mediterranean region, eastern Europe and South America and usually presents as hydatid disease of the liver but may affect other organs. The disease occurs when humans become the accidental host through ingestion of the eggs from contaminated food.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of Hydatid disease presenting as hives refractory to medical therapy over 4 years duration which was revealed to be caused by para-rectal hydatid cysts. Patient receive

BACKGROUND: The primary pathophysiological process of sepsis is to stimulate a massive release of inflammatory mediators to trigger systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), the major cause of multi-organ dysfunction and death. Like other helminths, Echinococcus granulosus induces host immunomodulation. We sought to determine whether E. granulosus cyst fluid (EgCF) displays a therapeutic effect on sepsis-induced inflammation and tissue damage in a mouse model.
METHODS: The anti-inflammatory effects of EgCF were determined by in vitro culture with bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs)

Pediatric lung infections continue to be a leading cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality. Although both pediatric and general radiologists are familiar with typical lung infections and their imaging findings in children, relatively rare lung infections continue to present a diagnostic challenge. In addition, the advances in radiological imaging and emergence of several new lung infections in recent years facilitated the need for up-to-date knowledge on this topic. In this review article, we discuss the imaging findings of pediatric lung infections caused by unusual/uncommon and new pathog

BACKGROUND: Parosmia symptoms are difficult to quantify due to their heterogeneity among patients, and thus a clinical challenge. This study aimed to assess parosmia with Self-Administered Odor Questionnaire for Parosmia (SAOQ-P), a modification of the widely used SAOQ in Japan. The primary objective was to assess the effectiveness of SAOQ-P in identifying parosmia symptoms and its potential integration into the clinical assessment process. The study also explored traditional olfactory test differences between patients with and without parosmia.
METHODS: Patients at Jikei Smell Clinic that pr

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the efficacy and complications of albendazole use after surgery in patients with pulmonary hydatid cysts.
METHODS: One hundred fifty-three consecutive patients who met the study criteria out of 215 patients who received prophylaxis with albendazole after surgery for isolated pulmonary hydatid cysts in our clinic between January 2011 and December 2020 were analysed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Eighty-six out of 153 (56.2%) of cases were male and 67 (43.8%) were female. The average age was 24.6 ± 17.4 (between 3 and 71 years), 76 of them (49.7%) were 18 years o

BACKGROUND: There is ample evidence demonstrating a reverse relationship between helminth infection and immune-mediated diseases. Accordingly, several studies have shown that Echinococcus granulosus infection and hydatid cyst compounds are able to suppress immune responses in allergic airway inflammation. Previous studies have documented the ability of hydatid cysts to suppress aberrant Th2 immune response in a mouse model of allergic asthma. However, there is a paucity of research on the effects of protoscoleces on allergic asthma. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate the effects of soma

Cystic Echinococcosis (CE), a zoonotic parasitic disease, is caused by the cestode Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. CE inflicts severe damage in cattle, sheep, and human hosts worldwide. Fertile CE cysts are characterized by the presence of viable protoscoleces. These parasite forms are studied with minimal contamination with host molecules. Hosts, cattle and sheep, show differences in their CE cyst fertility. The effect of the host in protoscolex transcriptome is not known. We genotyped and performed transcriptomic analysis on sheep protoscoleces obtained from liver and lung CE cysts. The

We report the unusual case of a 5-year-old migrant boy from a rural area of Morocco with an almost-giant lung hydatid cyst that was an incidental finding on a chest X-ray performed during routine visa procedures. Echinococcus granulosus serology test was initially negative with subsequent positive seroconversion. Albendazole was started at 4 weeks before surgery and maintained for 4 months, with a favourable outcome. Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is considered a neglected tropical disease and affects more than one million people worldwide, mostly from a lower socioeconomic background. Preventive

Organ or tissue tropism/preference in many parasites is essential for their establishment, survival and pathogenesis. In protozoan parasites e.g. Trypanosoma and Plasmodium, tissue tropism is associated with many important aspects such as transmission, treatment, and pathogenesis. In these parasites, tissue tropism is achieved by mechanisms such as sequestration, extravasation, transcellular migration, and vascular permeability. In contrast, little is known about the mechanism behind organ tropism/preference and the potential implication in parasitic metazoans like Echinococcus. Since intraspe

Echinococcosis is a common and endemic disease that affects both humans and animals. In this study, the in vitro activities of methanolic extracts of Ruta graveolens, Peganum harmala aerial parts, and Citrullus colocynthis seeds against protoscolosis and isolated bacterial strains from hydatid cysts were assessed using disc diffusion methods and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). The chemical composition of three methanolic extracts was studied using LC-MS. After 3 h of exposure to 40 mg/mL R. graveolens extract, a tenfold protoscolocidal effect was seen when compared to the convintional

Hydatidosis is one of the most important parasitic and zoonotic endemic infections caused by the larvae of cestode Echinococcus granulosus. Co-infection of hydatid cyst with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has been previously reported. The mortality rate of hydatidosis is reported to be 2-4% and the liver and lungs are the two most commonly involved organs, respectively. In the present study, we have reported two recovered pulmonary hydatidosis patients who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 after thoracot

Pulmonary tuberculosis is one of the most common immunosuppressive infections in India, seldom accompanies other parasitic and fungal infections. In our case, we describe the three coexistent infections and their clinical presentation in a 53-year-old woman. A fibro-cavitary lesion in lung with superadded infections of hydatid cyst and aspergillus which is rare has been elaborated in the present case.

Echinococcosis is one of the most common parasitic diseases. Most often, echinococcosis affects the liver and lungs. Difficult diagnosis of hydatid disease is determined by scanty symptoms. Additional difficulties arise in echinococcosis of rare localizations. Cardiac echinococcosis occurs in less than 2% of cases. However, incidence of complications and mortality are much higher in these patients. The authors report successful surgical treatment of cardiac hydatid cyst..
