OBJECTIVE: Hydatid cyst disease is a helminthic infection caused by Echinococcus granulous, which is encountered with cysts in many organs, especially the liver and lungs. Soft tissue and intramuscular hydatid cyst are rare even in endemic countries. It is challengig to distinguish subcutaneous and intramuscular hydatid cysts from soft tissue tumors. This study aimed to present the clinical features of primary soft tissue hydatid cyst cases without liver and lung hydatid cyst in the Southeast Anatolian region, where hydatid cyst disease is endemic.
METHODS: Patients admitted to the Şanlıurfa

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease is endemic in Mediterranean countries and most commonly occurs in the liver followed by the lung. A primary localization in the retroperitoneum is extremely rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 29-year-old Tunisian patient presenting with progressive left flank pain and skin urticaria. On abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography scan, a ruptured retroperitoneal hydatid cyst was diagnosed, which was confirmed by positive hydatid serology. The treatment consisted of resection of protruding dome. The evolution was favorable. No local recurrence wa

Larval stages of taeniid Echinococcus granulosus are the infective forms of cystic echinococcosis or hydatidosis, a worldwide zoonosis. The protoscolex that develops into the adult form in the definitive host is enveloped by a complex cellular syncytial tegument, where all metabolic interchange takes place. Little information is available as to the electrical activity of the parasite in this developmental stage. To gain insight into the electrical activity of the parasite at the larval stage, we conducted microelectrode impalements of bovine lung protoscoleces (PSCs) of Echinococcus granulosus

Hydatidosis is a common zoonotic disease with a high prevalence in developing countries. While a solitary cyst with unilateral lung involvement is common, bilateral involvement and multiple cysts are rare, only seen in 20% and 30% of the cases, respectively. Likewise, extensive involvement of extrapulmonary tissues and mediastinum is rare. We report an unusual case of mediastinal hydatidosis mimicking an intrathoracic malignancy in a 24-year-old female patient. She presented in the year 2020 with a history of left-sided chest pain and heaviness in the left hemithorax for a period of two months

Cardiac echinococcosis is rare, and its clinical evolution is slow and asymptomatic until complications occur such as sudden death. Although more frequent in endemic countries, hydatid disease should be known by forensic specialists with regard to the migration flows of people from zones with high endemicity and who are likely to die from infection. We report an autopsy case of a 33-year-old male without any medical history who presented to the emergency room with shortness of breath, chest tightness, tingling all over the body and faintness without fever. He died suddenly before the medical e

Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato causes Cystic echinococcosis. This study investigated the bacterial and fungal species in the liver and lung hydatid cysts obtained from sheep, goats, cattle, and camels slaughtered in Yazd abattoir, Central Iran. In this study, 84 hydatid cysts were obtained from 20 sheep, 13 goats, 25 cattle, and 26 camels. The fertility and viability rates were assessed using light microscopy and eosin staining, respectively. The aspirated hydatid cysts were cultured to detect the presence of any bacteria and fungi. Bacterial isolates were identified by biochemical tests.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic zoonosis caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato with medical importance and economic effect. This study was carried out in Sulaimani province, Kurdistan Region, Iraq from October 2020 to November 2021. The study focused on the prevalence of cystic echinococcosis in slaughtered animals. The total prevalence was 8% (1324/16524), with a high rate in sheep (5.3%) and low rates in goats and cattle (1.9% and 0.76%, respectively). With respect to abattoirs involved in the study, the highest prevalence was detected in Kalar abattoir (

BACKGROUND: Although video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) plays an increasingly significant part in treating thoracic disease, the role of thoracotomy is not replaced in cystic echinococcosis. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the application of VATS and traditional thoracotomy in the treatment of pulmonary hydatid disease in Shigatse of the Tibet Plateau and to compare the clinical safety and efficacy of these two surgical approaches.
METHODS: A total of 53 patients with pulmonary hydatid who received thoracoscopic cystectomy with needle aspiration from January 2015 to December

BACKGROUND: Hydatidosis is an endemic parasitosis in Tunisia that affect mostly the liver and the lung. Brain involvment is rare.
AIM: To focus on diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutive characteristics of cerebral hydatidosis.
METHODS: We report all cases of cerebral hydatidosis seen in the infectious diseases and neurosurgery departments between January 2013 and June 2020.
RESULTS: Six cases of intracranial hydatid cyst were reported. The male to female ratio was 3:3. Age ranged from 3 to 60 years with a median age of 20,5 years. All patients lived in rural areas. The clinical symptomatolog

OBJECTIVE: Hydatid cysts can occur in any place such as the liver, lung, spleen, kidney, brain, and soft tissue. Pulmonary hydatid cysts are more prone to rupture than liver hydatid cysts. In this study, we aimed to present the demographic characteristics, clinical symptoms, radiological findings, surgical findings, type of surgery performed, and postoperative complications of patients with pulmonary hydatid cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: The files of 94 patients who were operated on for pulmonary hydatid cysts in our clinic between January 2011 and October 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. T

In the modern era, infections of the lung are typically managed medically. However, all pulmonary hydatid cysts require surgery with rare exceptions, and bacterial abscesses require surgery if they are complicated, resistant to treatment, and/or large. Surgical treatment of these pulmonary conditions requires clinical knowledge of tests for causative organisms, perioperative antimicrobial therapies, options for surgical management, and postoperative care.

Cystic echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by the Echinococcus tapeworm. The disease can often affect organs such as the liver and lungs, muscles, bones, kidneys, brain, and spleen. Spinal cystic echinococcosis has been reported very rarely in the literature. In this report; we present a pediatric case with spinal cystic echinococcosis, who was diagnosed with multiple cystic echinococcosis in the liver and lungs and was admitted with complaints of difficulty in walking and leg pain 1 year after the albendazole treatment, which he had been taking for 3.5 years. If a diagnosis of cystic

Echinococcosis or hydatid disease is caused by the larval stage of the dog tapeworm, that is, Echinococcus granulosus , E. multilocularis , E. vogeli , or E. oligarthrus . Echinococcus granulosus causes cystic echinococcosis, which has a worldwide distribution. Liver is the most common site, affecting approximately two-third of the patients, whereas lung involvement is seen in approximately 25% of cases. This case is a very rare scenario of bilateral pulmonary hydatid cysts in a young child having exposure to a pet dog with negative hydatid serology and normal eosinophil count.

The annual cystic echinococcosis (CE) incidence in endemic countries is between 1 and 200 per 100,000 population. The clinical manifestations of CE are associated with damage or dysfunction of target organs and affect primarily the liver in around 70% of cases and lungs in around 20% of cases. The involvement of the spleen is rarely seen, representing 2 to 6% of all CE cases. We describe a 60-year-old female patient who presented with 15 days' history of intermittent fever and abdominal distension, having significant hepatosplenomegaly. CE was diagnosed involving the liver, spleen, and lungs a
