Hydatid cyst fluid (HCF) is a biochemically complex parasite-derived mixture whose effects on host and cancer cells are highly context dependent. The aim of this study was to determine whether short-term exposure to bovine liver- or lung-derived HCF alters Caco-2 XTT-based viability/metabolic activity and to characterize the associated global metabolic changes using untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Caco-2 cells were exposed to HCF at 20-60 μg/mL for 24 h for XTT analysis, and 40 μg/mL was selected for untargeted LC-MS metabolomics. XTT-based viability/metabolic activ

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic infection caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. While the lungs are frequently affected, rib involvement and chest wall invasion are extremely rare, occurring in less than 2.5% of cases. We report a rare case of recurrent hydatid disease exhibiting infiltrative growth into the costal trabeculae and lung parenchyma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old man presented with weight loss. He had a history of splenectomy for hydatid disease 14 years prior. Physical examination and blood tests were unremarkable; however, chest computed tomography (C

A hydatid cyst is caused by Echinococcus granulosus. It is transmitted to humans via the feco-oral route. It occurs mostly in the liver or lungs. Intracranial occurrence is a very infrequent phenomenon. This review aimed to provide an insight into the clinicopathological spectrum of primary intracranial hydatid cyst and its management in Pakistani patients. Databases (PubMed and Google Scholar) and national journals were searched using predefined keywords from their inception until October 31, 2025. All case reports (CR), case series (CS), and original articles that satisfied the inclusion and

RATIONALE: Echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease most commonly caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. As an intermediate host, Homo sapiens primarily exhibits hepatic involvement. Although hepatic involvement is the typical presentation, disseminated multi-organ infection is exceedingly rare.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 22-year-old Tibetan male. He experienced an epileptic seizure 1 day prior, without an apparent cause, and occasionally lost consciousness, though there was no nausea or vomiting.
DIAGNOSES: Cerebral echinococcosis, hepatic echinococcosis, and pulmonary

Hydatid disease is a major public health problem in Mediterranean countries, North Africa (including Morocco), Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and certain South American countries, where agricultural and pastoral practices remain largely traditional. This parasitic disease results from infection with the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. Diaphragmatic involvement is rare, even in regions where the disease is endemic. We present the case of a 31-year-old patient who had previously suffered from hepatic and renal hydatid infection and who developed multifocal disease affecting the lung pare

PURPOSE: Selective lung ventilation (SLV) during thoracic surgery improves surgical exposure and prevents contamination of the contralateral lung. In pediatric pulmonary hydatid cyst surgery, bronchopulmonary fistulas complicate surgical visualization and repair, significantly increasing the risk of contamination. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SLV in terms of operative time, prolonged air leak, reoperation necessity, and hospital stay duration in pediatric thoracotomy cases performed for hydatid lung cysts. METHODS: This retrospective study included pediatric patients under

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the treatment options for pulmonary hydatid cysts (HC) in children according to the size and location of the cyst and the presentation of the patients. METHODS: Children with HC treated between 2004 and 2022 were evaluated. Patients were grouped according to the size of the HC and those with ruptured and intact cysts at the time of admission, and the data were compared. ROC curve was created to determine the HC size limit in operated patients. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: A total of 72 patients with a mean age of 8.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis is a widespread zoonosis caused by the proliferation of the larval stage of Echinoccocus granulosus, which leads to the formation of cysts. In 75% of cases, there is a single cyst, which mostly affects the liver and the lungs. Disseminated forms are exceptional, and their treatment is complex and non-standardized. There are currently four therapeutic strategies. The indication for each strategy depends on several factors, including the number and stage of the cysts.
CASE REPORT: We reported the case of a 24-year-old woman, suffering from a multivisceral dis

The interaction between parasitic infection and the host virome represents a frontier issue in microbial ecology, yet how Echinococcus infection affects the multi-organ virome and whether these alterations hold diagnostic or interventional potential remains poorly understood. In this study, we performed viral metagenomic sequencing on gut, liver, and lung samples from both infected and uninfected mice, integrating community structure clustering, diversity indices, and differential analyses, including STAMP and LEfSe. Our results reveal that Echinococcus infection induced significant tissue-spe

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), a neglected zoonotic disease caused by E. granulosus, imposes significant morbidity and economic burdens worldwide. Nanoparticle-based delivery systems offer a promising strategy to enhance vaccine efficacy. This study evaluated a novel niosomal delivery system for protoscolex antigen (PSAg) against experimental CE. Rabbits (n=5/group) were randomized into two main groups: Group I (controls) consisting of subgroup Ia (non-infected, non-vaccinated negative controls) and Ib (infected, non-vaccinated positive controls); and Group II (vaccinated), comprising subgroup II

BACKGROUND: Cystic hydatid infection is a parasitic disease caused by the larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus, most commonly involving the liver and lungs. Cardiac involvement is rare, accounting for less than 2% of cases, with the left ventricle being the most commonly affected site. Involvement of the right ventricle is extremely uncommon and may lead to life-threatening complications such as tricuspid valve obstruction and hemodynamic compromise. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of a 42-year-old patient who presented to the emergency department with exertional dyspnea, hemoptys

BACKGROUND: Bronchobiliary fistula (BBF) is a rare acquired communication between the biliary system and the bronchial tree. Biliptysis (bile-stained sputum) is the most characteristic clinical clue and should prompt evaluation for underlying hepatobiliary pathology, particularly in endemic regions where echinococcosis remains prevalent. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old Arab male presented with recurrent biliptysis, right upper quadrant pain, nausea/vomiting, reduced appetite, and mild exertional dyspnea. He had a history of hepatic hydatid cyst surgery 18 years earlier followed by albendazole

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, is a rare but potentially fatal zoonotic infection. AE most commonly presents with multiple cysts in the liver, may spread to other organs through infiltration or metastasis and can mimic malignancy with fatal consequences if not diagnosed early. Its occurrence in childhood is extremely rare and simultaneous hepatic and pulmonary involvement has been reported only in a few cases. This report aimed to discuss a pediatric AE case with concurrent hepatic and pulmonary involvement, initially misdiagnosed as malignancy, in the ligh

PURPOSE: Hepatopulmonary hydatidosis (HPH) is a clinically relevant presentation of hepatic cystic echinococcosis (CE) in which pulmonary involvement is present at the time of diagnosis. Reliable identification of patients at risk remains challenging, and indiscriminate thoracic imaging may lead to unnecessary investigations. This study aimed to identify hepatic predictors associated with concomitant pulmonary involvement and to develop a simple risk stratification model to support selective thoracic imaging.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with confirmed hepati

Hydatid cyst disease is a parasitic disease induced by Echinococcus granulosus, which is still endemic in northern African countries. We report the case of a late-discovered pulmonary hydatid cyst in a four-year-old boy revealed by recent dyspnoea. The chest X-ray showed a complete white-out of the left hemithorax with mediastinal deviation, and the thoracoabdominal CT scan showed a giant pulmonary hydatid cyst encompassing the entire left lung associated with a hepatic cyst. An emergent superior pulmonary lobe resection was performed under deep general anaesthesia and selective intubation to

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease with heterogeneous presentation and stage-conscious management. Data describing the clinical profile, imaging pathways, management patterns, and outcomes of pediatric cases in Jordan remain limited.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 41 patients (0-13 years) with radiologically confirmed hydatid cysts treated between March 2022 and May 2025. Diagnosis was established using abdominal ultrasound and/or computed tomography (CT), and cysts were staged according to the Gharbi and WHO criteria. Forty patients underwent open cyst de

The zoonotic tapeworm Echinococcus equinus (G4) has been reported primarily in equines across Europe, Africa, and West Asia, but its presence in donkeys in Central Asia had not been documented. This knowledge gap is critical given the substantial and growing Kyrgyzstan-China trade of live donkeys. To assess the transboundary infection and associated risks, we conducted molecular surveillance on 1900 imported donkeys at a port slaughterhouse during November 2023-February 2024. A total of 52 hydatid cysts were collected from 18 infected animals. Protoscoleces were isolated from each cyst and exa

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic infection transmitted through the fecal-oral route, most commonly affecting the liver and lungs, and is endemic in many Mediterranean countries, including Jordan. While often diagnosed incidentally on imaging, hepatic involvement may present with abdominal pain, and lung involvement typically causes chronic cough, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
METHODS: This retrospective descriptive study was conducted at Al-Basheer Public Hospital in Amman between 2018 and 2024. All 83 adult patients with surgically confirmed cystic echinococcosis
