Bone versus soft tissue hydatid disease: a retrospective comparative cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal hydatid disease is uncommon and often mimics neoplastic lesions. Comparative evidence between bone and soft tissue involvement remains limited. We aimed to compare demographic characteristics, laboratory parameters and surgical outcomes between bone and soft tissue hydatid disease in an endemic region. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 64 consecutive patients who underwent surgery for histopathologically confirmed musculoskeletal hydatid disease between January 2010 and January 2024 (bone, n = 26; soft tissue, n = 38). Groups were compared regarding demographics

Surgical Management of Pulmonary Hydatid Disease.

Pulmonary hydatid cysts (PHCs), caused by Echinococcus granulosus, remain endemic in livestock-raising regions worldwide. Surgical removal of cysts is the mainstay of treatment, with the aim of eliminating the parasite while preserving the lung parenchyma and minimizing postoperative complications and recurrences. This article synthesizes the latest evidence on the optimal surgical management of PHCs, emphasizing practical recommendations for operating surgeons based on current best practices and the highest level of available evidence.

Intraoperative Ventilatory Collapse from Negative Pleural Suction in a Ruptured Pulmonary Hydatid Cyst.

A 52-year-old male with a ruptured right hydatid cyst underwent thoracotomy and cyst excision. After repair of diffuse parenchymal air leaks, application of negative pleural suction caused sudden ventilatory collapse with refractory hypotension, unresponsive to tube exchange or vasopressors. Lung-protective ventilation failed until clamping the drain immediately restored tidal volumes, confirming suction-mediated negative-pressure failure. Ultrasound showed good re-expansion without pneumothorax; subsequent pink frothy secretions suggested re-expansion/negative-pressure pulmonary oedema. Switc

Disseminated echinococcosis with discordant serology: a rare case of molecularly confirmed Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto G1 in Poland.

Echinococcosis is a parasitic zoonosis caused primarily by Echinococcus granulosus (cystic echinococcosis, CE) and Echinococcus multilocularis (alveolar echinococcosis, AE). While CE typically manifests with well-formed unilocular cysts, AE presents as an infiltrative, tumour-like process. Mixed or atypical presentations pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We describe a 24-year-old man from Morocco residing in Poland, who presented with progressive abdominal distension, pain, and subacute gastrointestinal obstruction. CT and ultrasound revealed multiple large, septated cysts involving

Evaluation and validation of reference genes for RT-qPCR analysis in different tissues of Echinococcus multilocularis-infected mice.

Echinococcosis, caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus species, threatens global public health and livestock economics. Currently, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is essential for mRNA quantification, and its accuracy relies on stably expressed reference genes that must be validated under specific experimental conditions. In this study, we systematically evaluated the expression stability of twelve candidate reference genes in the liver, lung, and spleen of E. multilocularis-infected and healthy controls (n = 6 per group). Based on raw cy

Harmine Derivative H-2-104 Alleviates Echinococcus granulosus-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis in Mice by Inhibiting Fibroblast Activation and Inducing DNA Damage.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) secondary to Echinococcus granulosus infection is a severe complication with limited therapeutic options. Harmine (HM) exhibits antifibrotic potential but is restricted by significant neurotoxicity. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and underlying mechanism of HM derivative H-2-104 in a clinically relevant E. granulosus-induced PF mouse model, and to clarify its advantages over parent compound HM. METHODS: A mouse model of E. granulosus-induced PF was established, and treated with H-2-104 (25 or 50 mg/kg) or nintedanib for 21 days. Lung

A pathological analysis of pediatric pulmonary cystic/cavitary lesions.

Pediatric pulmonary cystic/cavitary lesions are uncommon. The spectrum of cystic/cavitary pulmonary lesions in pediatric patients includes congenital and acquired lesions. They have similar clinical presentation and overlapping radiologic features. Histopathology plays an important role in diagnosis. This study was planned to describe the spectrum of surgically resected cystic/cavitary pulmonary lesions in pediatric patients (age <12 years) and correlate clinical features with pathology findings. This is a single-center 10-year retrospective descriptive study. The cases were divided into two c

Leptin promotes obesity‑related osteoarthritis progression via CD44/JAK2/STAT3 axis‑mediated chondrocyte apoptosis.

OBJECTIVE: The patients with sigmoid colorectal cancer commonly show high mortality and poor prognosis. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that the ubiquitinated proteins and ubiquitination-mediated molecular pathways influence the growth and aggressiveness of colorectal cancer. It emphasizes the scientific merits of quantitative ubiquitinomics in human sigmoid colon cancer. We hypothesize that the ubiquitinome and ubiquitination-mediated pathway networks significantly differ in sigmoid colon cancers compared to controls, which offers the promise for in-depth insight into molecular mechanism

Zoonotic threat of cystic echinococcosis in Tunisia: insights into livestock prevalence and identification of the G1 genotype.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis caused by the larval stage of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) complex. CE is globally distributed, with a particularly high prevalence in North African countries, especially Tunisia. Despite its significant public health impact and the economic burden it places on livestock production, recent data on CE prevalence in Tunisian livestock remain scarce. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of CE in livestock, investigate potential differences across host species, and identify risk factors contributing to the CE transmission

Postpartum maternal death resulting from complications of a large hydatid cyst of the lung in a resource-constraint setting: A rare case report and review of literature.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), a parasitic zoonotic infection caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus, predominantly affects the liver and lungs but can occur in any organ or tissue. Hydatid cysts during pregnancy are rare, with an incidence of approximately 1 in 20,000-30,000 pregnancies, and are often associated with more severe symptoms due to the physiological changes of pregnancy. In endemic areas, early recognition and prompt management are critical to improving outcomes. This case report from Northern Tanzania highlights a 30-year-old pregnant woman at 30 weeks of gestation w

Pulmonary manifestations and clinical management of echinococcosis in a low-endemic region of Mexico: a 15-year retrospective cohort study at a tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis has a low incidence even in endemic countries. It is a chronic and complex zoonosis that in many cases presents delay in diagnosis; it typically affects the liver in up to 90% of the cases, being disseminated pulmonary disease the most common in young subjects, while the rate of cases located only in the pulmonary parenchyma is low. In Mexico it is considered a disease of low endemicity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from patients with suspected echinococcosis infection from the hospital discharge database. RESULTS: Of the 70 patien

Echinococcus Infection and Metacestode Fertility in Yaks and Sheep - Four Provincial-Level Administrative Divisions, Northwestern China, 2023.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Echinococcosis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by the larval stage of cestode species belonging to the genus Echinococcus, which is highly prevalent in northwestern China. Echinococcus spp. includes numerous species/genotypes that have different infectivity and parasitism patterns in livestock hosts, potentially affecting the transmission dynamics of the parasite. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: In four PLADs of China, the prevalence of Echinococcus was 16.5% in yaks and 9.41% in sheep. The predominant species/genotype was E. granulosus s.s. (G1/G3), whi

Current Management of Pulmonary Hydatid Cyst.

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection caused by the larval stage of the Echinococcus granulosus worm, commonly found in developing countries. The lungs represent the second most commonly affected organ in both children and adults. The disease is more common in children than in adults, and the growth of hydatid cysts is more rapid in children than in adults. Diagnosing uncomplicated cases of hydatid cysts is generally straightforward clinically and radiologically. However, difficulties may arise in diagnosing complicated cysts. Surgery is the definitive treatment for pulmonary hydatid cysts.

Cystic Echinococcosis in Hospitalized Children and Adults from Western Romania: 2007-2022.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a serious health problem in many countries worldwide, including in Romania, because of the high infection rates in both humans and animals. We retrospectively assessed the demographic and epidemiological features of CE in children and adults hospitalized in Western Romania between 2007-2022. Analyzed data were collected from the hospitals' medical records. This research involved 426 subjects (3-90 years): 60 (14.1%) children and 366 (85.9%) adults. A decreasing trend in the number of cases was noted during the analyzed period (p = 0.004). Multiple-organ involvemen

Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) Versus Thoracotomy in the Treatment of Pulmonary Hydatid Cysts: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pulmonary hydatid cysts (PHC), resulting from infection by Echinococcus granulosus larvae, represent a substantial health risk in livestock-raising areas, often causing respiratory symptoms and even death. The primary treatment for PHC involves surgical excision, either through open thoracotomy or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). However, the superiority of one method over the other remains debatable. The present study aims to compare VATS and thoracotomy outcomes in managing PHC. METHODS: A trial involving 50 patients was conducted to compare VATS and thoraco
