Mitochondrial genome characterization and phylogenetic position of a putative taeniid tapeworm (Taenia sp. QH-2023) isolated from Pseudois nayaur.

Pseudois nayaur (blue sheep), a second-class nationally protected species in China, inhabits the western regions of the country. During a cause-of-death investigation of P. nayaur, an unidentified cysticercus was discovered in the lung of a deceased P. nayaur. Using molecular and bioinformatics approaches, the mitochondrial (mt) genome and phylogenetic position of the parasite were characterized. The mt genome comprises 13,507 bp and encodes 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs. Sequence analysis revealed a strong AT bias and codon usage preference typical of taeniid cestodes.

When size matters: Managing a giant pulmonary hydatid cyst in a pediatric patient: Case report.

RATIONALE: Giant pulmonary hydatid cysts in children are rare, with nonspecific symptoms often delaying diagnosis. Preservation of lung parenchyma during surgery is essential. This is the first reported case of such a cyst in a Palestinian pediatric patient. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 5-year-old girl presented with progressive left flank pain, dyspnea, and fever; initially misdiagnosed as gastroenteritis. DIAGNOSES: Chest X-ray and computed tomography revealed a hydatid cyst occupying >90% of the left lower lung lobe with pleural effusion. INTERVENTIONS: Urgent lateral thoracotomy combined with vi

Intrathoracic Echinococcosis: A 5-Year, Single-Center Experience.

Human cystic echinococcosis (CE) is caused by the larval forms of Echinococcus granulosus s.l. species complex that mainly affect the liver, with lung as the second most frequent location. We describe our experience with surgical treatment of lung CE, emphasizing the need for the least invasive approach when possible. Patients with intrathoracic CE who accessed our center from January 2019 to November 2023 were reviewed. Twenty-two patients, 12 males (54.5%), mean age 35 years, range 9-60, were treated. Eight patients (36.4%) had only lung involvement, seven (31.8%) had both liver and lung inv

Analysis of risk factors and development of a predictive model for postoperative pulmonary complications in hepatic echinococcosis patients.

Studies explicitly examining postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) following surgical interventions for hepatic echinococcosis are limited. In this paper, clinical data were retrospectively collected from patients with hepatic echinococcosis admitted to a Qinghai Provincial People's Hospital between January 2016 and June 2023. Among 1177 patients, 690 (58.6%) developed PPCs, with the incidence rate of Clavien-Dindo Grade II and upwards being 18.3%. Totally 7 independent risk factors for PPCs were identified by applying least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis

The value of nomogram analysis in predicting pulmonary metastasis in hepatic alveolar echinococcosis.

Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) is a rare zoonotic parasitic disease that closely resembles malignant tumors in both behavior and appearance. It can cause infiltration of affected organs and chronic liver damage. In advanced stages, it may metastasize or invade surrounding organs, resembling liver cancer, and is clinically referred to as "parasitic cancer." However, the prognosis of HAE with pulmonary metastasis is poor, and no reliable method currently exists to predict lung metastasis. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of a nomogram model, based on CT and MRI imaging features

Unforeseen pulmonary destruction following hepatic hydatid cyst fistulization: A case report of emergency pneumonectomy in a critically ill patient.

Direct fistulization of a hepatic hydatid cyst into the lung, causing rapid pulmonary destruction, is exceedingly rare. We report a 41-year-old male presenting with acute asphyxia due to a complicated hepatic hydatid cyst with a giant transdiaphragmatic fistula into the right lung, leading to complete lung destruction and massive tracheobronchial aspiration. Emergency right pneumonectomy was performed for irreversible lung damage. Intraoperative findings confirmed heavy adhesions, lung destruction, and an extensive scolex-laden fistula. The postoperative course was challenging, complicated by

Diagnostic challenges and treatment approaches for hydatid cysts in atypical localizations.

Hydatid disease, caused by the Echinococcus granulosus parasite, is traditionally associated with liver and lung involvement. However, recent years have seen an increase in cases with atypical localizations, such as the kidneys, thyroid, soft tissues, and bones. The study by Celik et al presents a series of five clinical cases where hydatid cysts were found in these rare anatomical regions, challenging conventional diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. The paper emphasizes the importance of differential diagnosis, as these cases can mimic other conditions, such as cancer, abscesses, or cysts.

A rare case of ruptured mediastinal echinococcal cyst causing diagnostic challenge: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Echinococcus is a common infection in an endemic country like Bhutan. Mediastinal echinococcosis is rare. Although presentation due to a mediastinal echinococcal cyst is variable according to the cyst's location, a reaction due to rupture of the cyst and simultaneous reaction to an administration of antibiotics such as ceftriaxone can cause a diagnostic challenge. We present a rare case of a mediastinal echinococcal cyst that ruptured at the time of admission, causing a diagnostic challenge of the cause of the reaction. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old female patient presented w

Challenges in the Management of Pediatric Pancreatic Hydatid Disease: A Systematic Review of the Literature and Our Clinical Experience.

Pancreatic hydatid disease (PHD) in children is rare compared to liver and lung involvement. The rarity and overlap with other cystic lesions often lead to challenges in the preoperative diagnosis and intraoperative surprises. Clear guidelines on the appropriate management of PHD are lacking. This review is intended to address these gaps in the literature. A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library), and ScienceDirect databases for pediatric PHD. Observational studies such as case reports, case series, an
