The Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato species complex is responsible for the neglected zoonotic disease known as cystic echinococcosis (CE). Humans and livestock are infected via fecal-oral transmission. CE remains prevalent in Western China, Central Asia, South America, Eastern Africa, and the Mediterranean. Approximately one million individuals worldwide are affected, influencing veterinary and public health, as well as social and economic matters. The infection causes slow-growing cysts, predominantly in the liver and lungs, but can also develop in other organs. The exact progression of th

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a potentially fatal systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) that threatens millions of lives worldwide. Echinococcus granulosus antigen B (EgAgB) is a protein released by the larvae of the tapeworm. This protein has been shown to play an important role in modulating host immune response. In this study we expressed EgAgB as soluble recombinant protein in E. coli (rEgAgB) and explored its protective effect on sepsis.
METHODS: The sepsis model was established by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) procedure in BALB/c mice. The therapeutic effect of rEgAgB on sepsis was

Echinococcus granulosus remains a global public health issue. Although predominantly affecting the liver, the lungs are the second most affected organ and often undergo surgical intervention. Here, a case managed by bronchoscopy and medical therapy is presented. A 26-year-old woman was presented with a cough, hemoptysis, and a 5 kg weight loss in the last two months. Chest imaging identified a 4 cm centrally cystic mass lesion in the middle lobe of the right lung, which was suspicious of lung cancer. Bronchoscopy revealed a whitish, plastic-like object that was difficult to extricate and obstr

INTRODUCTION: "Hydatid cyst" or cystic Echinococcosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. The liver and lungs are the most common sites to occur. Incidence in muscles is exceptionally rare. Surgery has been the traditional approach for treatment of cystic echinococcusis.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a rare case of 44 years old man with multiple hydatid cysts; liver, lungs, paraspinal muscles. The muscular cyst had manifested as a swelling in his back and was the principal clinical presentation as it caused pain and discomfort. He was treated with

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonosis caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus. The disease rarely occurs in Norway, but constitutes a significant global health issue.
CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his forties presented with right-sided flank pain. CT scan of thorax and abdomen revealed a 10 cm cystic lesion in the liver, suggestive of cystic echinococcosis. Serological test for specific antibodies was positive. Before transfer to a tertiary centre for liver surgery, he developed a cough. Repeated CT scan of thorax and abdomen showed perforation of the liver cyst through the dia

Echinococcosis is caused by larvae, the metacestode stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus, and poses a public health issue in many developing countries. It generally affects a single organ, most commonly the liver or lungs, and rarely involves multiple organs. We present the case of a 24-year-old Indian man living in Portugal, who was admitted to the Emergency Department with left-sided thoracic pain radiating to the back. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed a cystic nodule in the lower left lung. Laboratory tests showed high C-reactive protein levels and positive antibodies for Echinococcus

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by the larval forms of Echinococcus multilocularis, is a zoonotic disease affecting the liver, lungs, lymph nodes, kidneys, brain, bones, thyroid, and other organs. Diagnosing AE in a non-endemic area is usually challenging. With the rapid development and increasing application of sequencing techniques in recent years, metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has become a powerful tool for diagnosing rare infectious diseases.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital for the presence of pulmonary shadows for mor

This report describes a male in his late 20s who presented with a 2-month history of recurrent haemoptysis and chest pain. A chronic infection, such as tuberculosis, was suspected. He had undergone surgical resection of an intrapericardial hydatid cyst in the past. His blood investigations showed peripheral eosinophilia, and his chest X-ray showed a cystic oval lesion in the left upper zone. A CT pulmonary angiogram revealed filling defects in the bilateral segmental and subsegmental arteries with a cystic lesion in the left upper lobe. Further workup, including bronchoalveolar lavage culture

Parasitic infections in the United States are mostly seen in immigrants and travelers. In many cases, pulmonary and intensive care physicians fail to consider parasitic disease, which can result in delayed diagnosis and adverse outcomes. Almost 2,000 cases of imported malaria are diagnosed in the United States each year. Severe cases can be confused with bacterial sepsis (shock, lactic acidosis, pneumonia, renal failure, respiratory failure, and jaundice). In contrast to bacterial sepsis, survival is improved by restrictive fluid therapy. Parenteral artesunate is licensed to treat severe cases

OBJECTIVE: To examine outcomes and associated risk factors for children who undergo surgery for lung hydatidosis (LH).
STUDY DESIGN: Through a retrospective and analytical-aim-study, over a period of 35 years in 2 surgical departments, we reported all operative cases for LH in children, regardless of cyst number, location, and aspect. Univariate and multivariable analyses were used to assess variables potentially predictive of postoperative morbidity.
RESULTS: In total, 456 children with a mean age of 10.3 years were included. We performed 544 surgical procedures for 704 cysts with a median

In Xinjiang, previous reports of cystic echinococcosis (CE) in livestock have focused on West and Middle Tianshan Mountains. In contrast, there is an absence of research on CE in the East Tianshan Mountains. To determine the epidemiology and genetic diversity of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) in domestic animals in the East Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang, China, the livers and lungs of 1773 domestic animals were examined, between January 2023 and March 2023, and 40 cysts were collected. Polymerase chain reaction was used for the molecular diagnosis of the cysts. Statistical results

Although hydatid cyst, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, can develop in any part of the body, involvement of the liver and lung represents approximately 90% of all cases. Involvement of the musculoskeletal system is comparatively rare. Diagnosis is difficult because symptoms are non-specific. We present a case, together with the imaging findings, in order to draw attention to the exclusion of hydatid cyst before surgery or biopsy in patients with muscular pain and a palpable mass.

A total of 384 animals (sheep, goat, cattle, and buffalo) were examined for the presence of hydatid cysts only in the lungs. The lung tissue samples associated with the hydatid cyst were collected immediately after slaughter, followed by fixation in 10% formalin. The fixed tissue was subjected to paraffin embedding technique. Tissue sections of 5 microns were cut by microtome and stained using Harri's Haematoxilin and Eosin method. Overall, 13.80% of ruminants were found positive for lung infections with hydatid cyst. Only the sex of ruminants showed significant (P < 0.05) association with the

Alveolar echinococcosis is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus multilocularis in the metacestode stage. The disease involves the liver in almost all cases, and additionally, lung involvement is accompanied in approximately 13% of the cases. Due to the low incidence of pulmonary alveolar echinococci, there are few case reports of lung involvement in the literature. In this study, computed tomography (CT) findings related to pulmonary involvement in alveolar echinococcosis cases, which have increased worldwide in recent years, were evaluated.
