[Should we all do mouth taping? The real story behind breathing through the nose.].

Breathing through the nose has many benefits compared to mouth breathing. There are ways to force breathing through the nose, for instance by mouth taping. It is, however, normal that nasal passage variates. This article describes the normal physiologic variations in nasal breathing. Mouth taping is not needed to change it!

Diagnosis and fluoroscopic balloon dilation of nasopharyngeal stenosis concurrent to chronic displacement of the epiglottis in a pet rabbit.

A 4-year-old, male neutered rabbit presented for chronic, antibiotics non-responsive upper respiratory disease. Computed tomography revealed sinusitis and nasopharyngeal stenosis resulting in upper airway obstruction. Deep nasal culture grew Pasteurella multocida. Airway fluoroscopy, performed with the rabbit conscious in a standing position, confirmed the location of the obstruction and subtle open mouth breathing. Pharyngoscopy further confirmed epiglottic displacement. In addition to antimicrobial therapy, three fluoroscopic balloon dilation procedures were performed to address the nasophar

The Therapeutic Role of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy in Childhood Residual Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

BACKGROUND: Residual obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in childhood OSA even after upper airway obstruction removal by adenotonsillectomy. Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is becoming a popular treatment in stomatology but lacks adequate evidence of effectiveness in childhood OSA. Our study attempts to evaluate the effect of OMT on childhood OSA by subjective and objective methods. METHODS: Thirty-seven children diagnosed with postoperative residual OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) were enrolled in the study and divided into a treated group (n = 21) and a untreated group (n = 16). The

Thermographic analysis of the periorbital region in mouth and nasal breathing children.

PURPOSE: To verify whether the breathing mode interferes with surface periorbital temperatures and propose a thermographic analysis method for this region. METHODS: Exploratory, observational, cross-sectional study. Thermographic images of 14 mouth-breathing and 14 nasal-breathing children were collected and analyzed using the Visionfy program (Thermofy®, Brazil) with breast 1 color scale. The ellipse tool delimited the region of interest (periorbital region) and a customized shape subdivided the region of interest into four arcs. The study collected maximum, mean, and minimum absolute and st

Is there an association between cognitive impairment and urinary adrenaline, norepinephrine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and taurine levels in children with obstructive sleep apnea?: A case control study.

BACKGROUND: Children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can develop cognitive impairments. Urinary adrenaline (EPI), norepinephrine (NE) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are elevated, and taurine is decreased in children with OSA. The purpose of this study was to investigate the above-mentioned neurotransmitter levels in children with and without OSA, and explore their association with OSA-related cognitive impairments. METHODS: Children underwent overnight polysomnography (PSG) for habitual snoring or mouth breathing in the pediatric sleep center from February 2023 to February 2024, as wel

Non-invasive Detection of Adenoid Hypertrophy Using Deep Learning Based on Heart-Lung Sounds.

Adenoid hypertrophy is one of the most common upper respiratory tract disorders during childhood, leading to a range of symptoms such as nasal congestion, mouth breathing and obstructive sleep apnea. Current diagnostic methods, including computerized tomography scans and nasal endoscopy, are invasive or involve ionizing radiation, rendering them unsuitable for long-term assessments. To address these clinical challenges, this paper proposes a novel deep learning approach for the non-invasive detection of adenoid hypertrophy using heartlung sounds. Firstly, we established a heart-lung sound data

Mouth breathing and orthodontic intervention: Does the evidence support keeping our mouths shut?

It is believed that mouth breathing, particularly during early childhood, is associated with the development of various unfavorable craniofacial characteristics such as mandibular retrognathia, narrow high arch palates and alar bases, lip incompetence, increased vertical facial height, and mandibular plane angles. Today, there is significant debate and confusion pertaining to the role of orthodontists in identifying and managing mouth breathing, especially for young patients as early as 3 years old. Using the historical and contemporary evidence-based literature along with an ethical and pragm

Impact of mouth breathing on physical proficiency in children and adolescents: a cross-sectional study using the 6-minute walk test.

Mouth breathing (MB) is a concerning public health problem during childhood. The present cross-sectional study used the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) to compare the physical proficiency of children and adolescents who had a diagnosis of MB with that of children and adolescents who demonstrated nasal breathing (NB). A total of 80 patients aged 7 to 15 years were divided equally (n = 40) into MB and NB groups and underwent 2 6MWTs at 15-minute intervals. Cardiorespiratory variables--heart rate, respiratory rate, and peripheral oxygen saturation--were analyzed at 3 observation periods (OPs): OP0, bas

Computational and experimental study of thermal behavior in the oral cavity for biosensing applications.

This study investigates transient heat transfer in the oral cavity under varying conditions using a finite element model combined with corresponding experiments. By modeling and measuring oral temperature during cold liquid intake, temperature recovery, and prolonged cold air inhalation, this study examines both temperature distribution across different oral regions and transient thermal dynamics. Results reveal that anterior teeth exhibit greater thermal sensitivity and slower temperature recovery following cold exposure, while posterior regions maintain higher and more stable temperatures.
