A new method for testing non-porous surfaces for their antimicrobial efficacy using an aerosol-generating spray chamber.

The application of antimicrobial surfaces requires proof of their effectivity by in vitro methods in laboratories. One of the most common test methods is ISO 22196:2011, which represents a simple and inexpensive protocol by applying the bacterial suspension with known volume and concentration covered under a polyethylene film on the surfaces. The incubation is then conducted under defined humidity conditions for 24 h. Another approach for testing non-porous surfaces is the newly published ISO 7581:2023. With this protocol, a "dry test" is achieved by spreading and drying 1 μL of a bacterial su

Visual cues of respiratory contagion: Their impact on neuroimmune activation and mucosal immune responses in humans.

This study investigated the neural correlates of perceiving visual contagion cues characteristic of respiratory infections through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Sixty-two participants (32f/ 30 m; ∼25 years on average) watched short videos depicting either contagious or non-contagious everyday situations, while their brain activation was continuously measured. We further measured the release of secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) in saliva to examine the first-line defensive response of the mucosal immune system. Perceiving sneezing and sick individuals compared to non-contagious

Stimulus conditions eliciting sneezing in response to bright light.

The photic sneeze reflex (PSR) is an involuntary sneezing response to bright light exposure, affecting approximately 25% of the population. Despite its long history in scientific literature, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Several theories, including optic-trigeminal summation, parasympathetic hypersensitivity, and parasympathetic generalization, have been proposed, but none have been conclusively validated. Reproducing the PSR reliably in a laboratory setting is crucial for understanding its neural underpinnings, yet the specific light parameters that trigger PSR are not well-define

Nanostructured WS2@Chitosan-Modified Screen-Printed Carbon Electrodes for Efficient Amperometric Detection of Histamine.

Histamine, a pivotal chemical within certain cells of the human body, is responsible for eliciting various allergic symptoms, such as sneezing and a runny nose. In cases of allergies, where the immune system misidentifies typically harmless substances, such as certain foods or dust, as harmful, an efficient histamine sensor becomes imperative. This research introduces a novel sensing platform by employing a material comprising hydrothermally synthesized WS2 nanosheets and using this with a chitosan (CS) biopolymer on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPE). Integrating WS2 and CS components on

Detecting Noncoding RNA Associated with Dust Mite-Sensitized Allergic Rhinitis through High-Throughput Sequencing and Its Clinical Relevance.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic inflammatory and reactive disease of the nasal mucosa mediated by immunoglobulin E following exposure to allergens in atopic patients. The primary mediator involved is histamine release, and various immune-active cells and cytokines contribute to the inflammatory response. The condition is characterized by nasal itching, sneezing, hypersensitivity, and swelling of the nasal mucosa. Dust mites are prevalent allergens in China, and both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of AR. Discovering sensitizing allergens is cru

Sensory neurons on guard: roles in pathogen defense and host immunity.

The nervous system, like the immune system, constantly interfaces with the environment, encountering threats, including pathogens. Recent discoveries reveal an emerging role for sensory neurons in host defense and immunity. Sensory neurons detect infections either by directly sensing microbial signals or through immune mediators. Beyond pathogen detection, they modulate immune responses and local inflammation by interacting with immune cells, influencing inflammation and pathogen clearance. Additionally, sensory neurons trigger protective reflexes - such as pain, coughing, sneezing, and itchin

Mapping full-range infection transmission from speaking, coughing, and sneezing in indoor environments and its impact on social distancing.

Infectious respiratory diseases have posed significant threats to public health in the past decades. However, the full-range transmission in indoor environments remains unclear. In this study, we used the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method with the large eddy simulation (LES) model, validated by particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments, to explore the full-range transmission in an indoor space. The penetration of airborne droplets was divided into five power-law phases: accelerating jet (< 0.04-0.1 s, 0.3 m), decelerating jet (< 0.2-0.6 s, 0.7 m), puff (< 20 s, 2.2-3.8 m), mixing (<
