Efficacy and safety of a particulate yeast β-glucan preparation in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis (BETALL): a randomised placebo-controlled crossover trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) has been shown to be a significant global health burden. Despite the existence of pharmacological treatments, mainly antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, and decongestants, many individuals with seasonal allergies turn to alternative herbal medicines and nutritional supplements for the management of symptoms. The primary objective of the current study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a 500 mg daily dose of a yeast β-glucan preparation (M-Gard®) on reducing the severity of nasal and ocular symptoms in a population with seasonal AR. METHODS: This ra

PBX3 regulates mast cell parthanatos via TOP2A mediated DNA damage in allergic rhinitis.

This study explores the regulatory roles of TOP2A and PBX3 in mast cell sensitization and allergic rhinitis (AR). We induced mast cell differentiation from Balb/c mouse bone marrow cells via IL-3 and SCF, and found markedly increased TOP2A expression. TOP2A plays a key role in mast cell parthanatos, survival, mitochondrial function, and degranulation. Overexpression enhanced cell survival, reduced apoptosis, and maintained mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), while knockdown reversed these effects. Additionally, TOP2A regulates DNA damage, senescence, and inflammation, particularly PARP-1 e

Lemongrass essential oil attenuates nasal hyperresponsiveness induced by Japanese cedar pollen in mice.

Lemongrass essential oil (LG) has known to exhibit anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory activities. However, the potential effects of LG on allergic rhinitis (AR) have not been investigated. The present study investigated the effects of LG on AR induced by Japanese cedar pollen (JCP). The present study investigated the effects of LG on AR induced by JCP. Mice were actively sensitized by i.p. injections of JCP adsorbed to alum, and then repeatedly challenged by intranasal administrations of JCP. A subset of animals was treated intranasally with LG prior to each JCP challenge. Repeated intranasal

Knowledge regarding respiratory allergy among primary care physicians in Georgia.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: The prevalence of respiratory allergies has been increasing worldwide, yet there are limited data on the knowledge and practices of primary care physicians (PCPs) in Georgia, where access to primary care has expanded under the Universal Health Care Programme. Given that PCPs are often the first point of contact for patients with allergy symptoms, this study aimed to evaluate their education and knowledge regarding respiratory allergies in three regions of Georgia. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among PCPs in Tbilisi, Samegrelo, and Kakheti. A structured qu

Lysophosphatidic acid mitigates vascular permeability and allergic rhinitis in mice.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of allergic rhinitis involves vasodilation and increased vascular permeability. Current treatments primarily target inflammatory mediators, with a limited focus on vascular abnormalities. We aimed to investigate whether lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), which regulates vascular stability through its receptor, LPAR4, could ameliorate allergic symptoms by normalizing vascular function. METHODS: A mouse model of ragweed-induced allergic rhinitis was treated with LPA. We assessed the sneezing frequency, serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, eosinophil infiltration, vascu

The relationship between allergic rhinitis and sleep disorders and mental health.

Allergic Rhinitis (AR) is a highly prevalent IgE-mediated chronic inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa worldwide. Its incidence is continuously increasing and has become one of the important chronic diseases affecting public health. Recent studies have gradually revealed that AR not only presents with local symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and nasal itching, but is also closely related to a wide range of physical and mental health problems, especially mental and psychological disorders (such as anxiety and depression) and decreased sleep quality. There is a complex

Novel Surgical Approach to Posterior Nasal Neurectomy without Identifying the Posterior Nasal Nerve.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior nasal neurectomy (PNN), a procedure used to manage intractable allergic rhinitis, requires precise identification of the posterior nasal nerve and associated neurovascular bundles within the posterior nasal region, including the sphenoid artery. Mastery of reliable surgical techniques and considerable experience are imperative for successful execution. OBJECTIVES: We describe a novel surgical strategy for posterior nasal neurectomy that circumvents the need to directly identify the posterior nasal nerve directly. METHODS: To clarify the effects of PNN, pre- and post-o

Sneezing in response to naturalistic bright light exposure.

BACKGROUND: The photic sneeze reflex (PSR) is a common but underexplored phenomenon where bright light triggers sneezing, affecting ~30% of the population. This study aimed to characterise the light conditions inducing PSR. METHODS: One male PSR-affected participant logged sneezing events during a 30-day real-world light exposure study. An indoor setup using a multi-primary LED source and an integrating sphere delivered 30-second light stimuli while pupillometric data were collected. RESULTS: A total of 82 sneezing events were recorded, averaging 2.73 sneezes/day (range: 1-6 per event). Illu

Proprioceptive Trunk-Based Physiotherapy for Stress Urinary Incontinence: Case Report in a Rhythmic Gymnast.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) encompasses the set of clinical alterations characterised by a loss of muscular control or an incoordination in the activity of the muscles that make up this region. In the female population, the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) is between 24% and 45%, making it the most common PFD. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) occurs when there is an increase in intra- abdominal pressure, such as when coughing, sneezing or lifting heavy objects, causing involuntary urine leakage. It is common for elite gymnasts to experience an increase in intra-abdominal

Effects of Moderate-Intensity Aerobic Exercise on Clinical Symptoms and Physiological Outcomes in Young Adults with Persistent Allergic Rhinitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Allergic Rhinitis (AR) is an IgE-mediated inflammatory disorder that impairs quality of life and systemic function. Following the 'one airway, one disease' paradigm, AR-related inflammation often extends to the lower respiratory tract. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of an 8-week moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MOA) program on clinical symptoms, nasal airflow, airway inflammation, pulmonary function, and cardiorespiratory parameters in young adults with physician-confirmed persistent AR. To isolate the exercise effects, all participants discontinued antihistamine

Mechanistic Insights Into House Dust Mites Immunotherapy-Induced Desensitization for Sustained Protection of Allergic Rhinitis in Mice.

The worldwide prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR) is substantial and is considered a global health problem. Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is the only approach that treats the underlying cause of allergy by inducing a desensitization response to the allergen. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness and the possible desensitization mechanisms of house dust mite (HDM) allergen extract-based IT against mice models of AR. The experimental mice were divided into six groups: normal group, normal group with HDM challenge, AR group, and three AR groups that received HDM-IT at low, moderate, an

Incorporating Euglena gracilis into the habitual diet modulates immune function and reduces common cold-like symptoms: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Dietary approaches to support immune function have emphasized the importance of dietary fiber, including non-digestible polysaccharides, although intake remains below recommended levels in many populations. In this context, microalgae have attracted attention as sustainable sources of these components. Euglena gracilis, a microalga used in foods, contains paramylon, a β-1,3-glucan with reported immunomodulatory properties; however, its effects on plasmacytoid dendritic cell (pDC) activation in humans within a dietary context remain incompletely understood. METHODS: This randomized

Butyrylated Starch Attenuates Antibiotic-Exacerbated Allergic Rhinitis by Restoring the Gut Microbiota and Barrier Function in Mice.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is often exacerbated by antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis. This study investigated whether butyrylated starch (BS) could mitigate vancomycin (VAN)-induced AR aggravation by restoring gut homeostasis. In a murine AR model (n = 5 per group), VAN administration significantly depleted the abundance of butyrate-producing bacteria (e.g., Clostridia and Lachnospiraceae), suppressed colonic butyrate levels (1.08 ± 0.36 vs. 8.20 ± 0.78 μg/g in controls), and impaired intestinal barrier integrity, thereby worsening nasal symptoms (sneezing frequency: 4.40 ± 1.14 vs. 2.40 ± 0.55 in
