Giant Hydatid Cyst Originating From Psoas Muscle Extending to the Iliac Bone: A Case Report.

Hydatid cysts, caused by the Echinococcus granulosus parasite, predominantly affect the liver and lungs, but can also impact other organs such as the kidneys, brain, and muscles. Infection occurs when individuals ingest eggs from contaminated food or water, leading to cyst formation primarily in the liver. While hydatid cysts are commonly found in various endemic regions, muscular involvement is rare, particularly in the psoas muscle. This report presents a case of a muscular hydatid cyst, describes its management, and emphasizes the need for awareness and prompt intervention. A 50-year-old ma

Femoral hydatid cyst: A rare localization of bone echinococcosis: A case report.

Echinococcosis, or hydatid disease, is an endemic disease that affects many regions worldwide and remains a significant public health issue in areas with high endemicity. It is caused by an infection with the dog tapeworm *Echinococcus granulosus*, which is transmitted to humans either through direct contact with dogs or by ingesting contaminated food. This disease primarily affects internal organs, particularly the liver and lungs. Although virtually all organ systems can be involved, bone involvement is possible, especially in the femur. This report presents a case of an extensive hydatid cy

Advances in Novel Diagnostic Techniques for Alveolar Echinococcosis.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis, is a serious parasitic disease that presents significant health risks and challenges for both patients and healthcare systems. Accurate and timely diagnosis is essential for effective management and improved patient outcomes. This review summarizes the latest diagnostic methods for AE, focusing on serological tests and imaging techniques such as ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). Cranial Dura Breach by Extradural Skull Base Hydatid Cyst Leading to Intraventricular Spread: A Novel Case of Intraventricular Spread.

Intraventricular hydatid cysts are extremely rare. Till date, these cysts have been believed to originate from the ventricle itself. Of the various intraventricular cysts, primary solitary cysts are the most common ones. These cysts are purely intraventricular or partly parenchymal with an intraventricular spread. These cysts have so far never been reported to spread contiguously from the extradural location, breach the dura, and thereafter, migrate intraventricularly. Here, we present a unique case of intraventricular spread of an extracerebral hydatid cyst after a dural breach. The ability o

Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato promotes osteoclast differentiation through DUSP4-MAPK signaling in osseous echinococcosis.

INTRODUCTION: Osseous echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus granulosus infection, is characterized by progressive bone destruction driven by abnormal osteoclast activation. Dual-specificity phosphatase 4 (DUSP4), a key negative regulator of the MAPK pathway, inhibits osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption. This study aimed to elucidate the role of DUSP4 in E. granulosus-induced bone loss. METHODS: In vitro, a co-culture system of E. granulosus protoscoleces (PSCs) and bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs) was established. Osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption were assessed

Echinococcus granulosus promotes MAPK pathway-mediated osteoclast differentiation by inhibiting Nrf2 in osseous echinococcosis.

Osseous echinococcosis causes severe "osteolytic" changes in the bone tissue of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) infection sites by promoting the over-differentiation of osteoclasts at the site. Nrf2 is a key regulator of osteoclast differentiation and formation, and this study investigated the regulatory mechanism by which Nrf2 promotes osteoclast differentiation after E. granulosus infection. In vitro, our study revealed that PSC intervention suppressed the expression levels of intracellular Nrf2 and its downstream effector, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), while increasing the content of int

Hydatidosis with Atypical Localization: Report of Three Cases and Literature Review.

Echinococcosis is a common parasitic disease with a heavy public health burden in many geographic regions and populations, mainly in the Mediterranean basin, Western China, Central Asia and South America. Most often, echinococcosis affects the liver and lungs. Despite being rare, other organ involvement may occur. We report three original cases of atypical localization of hydatid cysts from diagnosis to treatment to underline this disease's challenges. The affected organs are bone, heart, and brain. Thus, in endemic regions, hydatid cysts should be considered as a differential diagnosis of pat

Hydatidosis of the long bones treated with en bloc resection and reconstruction with mega prosthesis- a report of 2 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Osseous hydatidosis is a rare condition caused by a cestode called Echinococcus Granulosus. The bone invasion is rare and accounts for only 0,5-4% of all forms of hydatidosis. Its treatment is difficult as they are diagnosed late due to the lack of specific symptoms. We describe in this article two cases who had major invasion of long bones. CASES: First case is a 45-year-old-woman consulted for recurrent pain in her right shoulder and arm. Plain X-rays seemed normal. CT-scan of the shoulder and humerus revealed cysts invading the proximal humerus. The MRI showed osteolytic and

The deceptive cysts of echinococcus granulosus in the thigh: A case series and review of diagnostic and management challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Hydatid cyst disease, caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus, is a zoonotic parasitic infection that is endemic in many regions of the world. Musculoskeletal involvement, particularly in the thigh, is rare, accounting for approximately 1-4 % of all hydatid cyst cases. This case series aims to contribute valuable information by presenting three distinct cases of hydatid cyst affecting different compartments of the thigh. CASES PRESENTATION: We detail the diagnostic process, surgical and medical management strategies, and outcomes observed during the follow-up perio

Non-Surgical Exceptional Management of Inoperable Hydatidosis with Radiotherapy: Case Report and Review of Literature.

Vertebral hydatidosis is a rare and severe form of echinococcosis with limited treatment options when surgery is not feasible. Radiotherapy has traditionally been considered ineffective, but emerging evidence suggests a potential role in disease control. We report the case of a 71-year-old man with chronic vertebral hydatidosis affecting fifth lumbar vertebra and the sacrum, causing nerve compression and soft tissue extension. Because of the inoperability of the lesion, the patient underwent radiology-guided drainage, followed by radiotherapy (54 gray in 27 fractions), resulting in significant

Hydatic Cyst Infection of the Tibia Mimicking Chondrosarcoma on 18F-FDG PET/CT Scan.

A hydatid cyst is a zoonotic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. The liver and lungs are the most affected organs. Although rare, osseous involvement by hydatid cyst disease can occur because the rigid bone trabeculae prevent formation of the characteristic adventitia. While fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) findings in hepatic and pulmonary hydatid cysts are well described, this case, to the best of our knowledge, represents the first report of bone hydatid disease located in an extremity evaluated by 18F-FDG PET/computed tomography.
