An unusual presentation of cystic hydatid disease: Left temporal bone involvement with transverse sinus obliteration.

Cystic hydatid disease (CHD), caused by Echinococcus granulosus, remains a significant global health concern. While commonly affecting the liver and lungs, rare localizations can pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This report presents a case of CHD affecting the left temporal bone, originating from the mastoid cells, resulting in left transverse sinus obliteration and cerebellar hemisphere compression. This unusual presentation highlights the importance of considering CHD in the differential diagnosis of neurological symptoms, including vertigo, even in the absence of more typical cli

Functional characterization of TGFβ/BMP receptors in Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto: implications for parasite survival and therapeutic targeting.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), a zoonosis caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (E. granulosus s.l.), remains a global health burden. Despite the conserved role of the transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ)/Smad signaling in cellular regulation across species, the molecular mechanisms of TGFβ/bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) receptors in E. granulosus sensu stricto (E. granulosus s.s.) are poorly understood. The TGFβ/BMP receptors of E. granulosus s.s. were cloned and molecularly characterized. The positive binding interaction between receptors and their l

Mechanistic role of the IL-1β/c-Fos/NFATc1 signaling axis in echinococcal infection-promoted osteoclast differentiation and activation in pathological osteolysis: a prospective controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Effective therapies remain elusive for devastating osteolysis in osseous echinococcosis, thus necessitating mechanistic exploration. To elucidate the molecular mechanism by which echinococcal infection promotes osteoclast differentiation and activation via the IL-1β/c-Fos/NFATc1 signaling axis in pathological osteolysis of osseous echinococcosis. METHODS: Retrospective RT-qPCR analysis quantified mRNA expression of osteoclastogenesis-associated inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8) in bone cyst tissues from 21 osseous echinococcosis patients versus histologically normal

Hydatid disease of the distal humerus treated with wide resection and reconstruction with endoprosthesis.

A man in his 40s from a rural area presented with progressive pain and functional limitation of the right arm without trauma. Imaging revealed an aggressive lytic lesion with pathological fracture of the distal humerus. Staging studies excluded other lesions. Percutaneous biopsy confirmed osseous hydatid disease. Preoperative albendazole was administered, followed by wide en bloc resection of a 15 cm humeral segment with preservation of neurovascular structures. Reconstruction was achieved using a modular distal humerus endoprosthesis. Postoperative albendazole continued for 6 weeks. At 12 mon

Spinal hydatid cyst with myelopathy: a rare case report.

A 23-year-old female presented with spinal cord compression and worsening motor weakness due to an extradural cyst in the thoracic spine on MRI thought to be due to a benign, non-infective spinal arachnoid cyst. Surgical excision surprisingly revealed a histological diagnosis of a spinal hydatid cyst. This case highlights that hydatid cyst disease, though a rare spinal pathology, should be considered as a differential diagnosis using serology and history of transmission risk as part of the preoperative workup. This would allow the implementation of intraoperative precautions to minimise risk o

Primary hydatid cyst of the spleen: A rare case report and literature review.

Hydatidosis is an endemic disease in certain areas in the world particularly in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and South America, caused by a cestode known as Echinococcus granulosus. Humans are the accidental intermediate hosts. The liver and the lungs are the most commonly involved organ. If the parasite passes through the pulmonary capillary bed, the hydatid cyst may develop at any site in the body like bone, pancreas, brain, kidney, and orbit. Isolated spleen hydatid cyst is very rare. We hereby report one observation of isolated hydatid cyst of the spleen in a patient living in non-e

[Preliminary study on the effect of Echinococcus multilocaris on phenotypic transformations of glucose metabolism and polarization types in macrophages].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Echinococcus multilocularis on the phenotypic transformations of glucose metabolism, polarization types and inflammatory responses in macrophages, so as to provide insights into elucidation of echinococcosis pathogenesis. METHODS: Bone marrow cells were isolated from C57BL/6J mice at ages of 6 to 8 weeks, and induced into bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) with mouse macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF), which served as controls (BMDMs-M0). BMDMs-M0 induced M2 macrophages by interleukin-4 for 24 hours served as the IL-4 induction group, an

The multifaceted musculoskeletal hydatid disease.

Musculoskeletal hydatid disease is rare and can be located anywhere but most commonly the bone and muscles of the spine, pelvis, then the lower limbs. Imaging is essential for its diagnosis, performing the pre-therapeutic assessment, guiding possible percutaneous treatments, and providing post-therapeutic follow-up. Musculoskeletal hydatidosis can take several forms that may suggest other infections and tumors or pseudotumors. MRI and CT are superior for its diagnosis but ultrasound and radiography remain the most accessible examinations in developing countries where this parasitosis is endemi

Immunomodulatory effects of hydatid antigens on mesenchymal stem cells: gene expression alterations and functional consequences.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis, caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus, remains a global health challenge. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are renowned for their regenerative and immunomodulatory properties. Given the parasite's mode of establishment, we postulate that MSCs likely play a pivotal role in the interaction between the parasite and the host. This study aims to explore the response of MSCs to antigens derived from Echinococcus granulosus, the etiological agent of hydatid disease, with the hypothesis that exposure to these antigens may alter MSC function and impact th

A case report of biclonal immunoglobulin D lambda/lambda multiple myeloma in patient with liver echinococcosis.

Less than 2% of all symptomatic multiple myeloma (MM) has immunoglobulin D (IgD) as monoclonal protein. Biclonal gammopathy is much rarer. At the time of diagnosis, disease is often in advanced stage, including renal failure, anemia, hypercalcemia and lytic bone lesions. Due to the rarity of myeloma itself, but also due to the fact that anti-IgD antisera is not used in routine practice, there are only a few reports of IgD MM described in the literature. This case report describes a patient with IgD lambda MM with anemia and renal failure. Anemia, renal failure, and > 80 percent plasma cells in

Hydatid cyst of the sacrum: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bone hydatidosis is a rare parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus, with a frequency of 1-2 %, it has a high morbidity and mortality rate due to its long clinical latency and lack of symptomatic specificity. This often leads to delayed diagnosis and discovery, usually at the stage of complications. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of sacral hydatidosis in a 71-year-old patient with no prior medical history. The symptomatology was a pelvic pain that had been ongoing for 5 months with constipation and difficulty with defecation. The clinical and ra

Nrf2 induces angiogenesis in spinal cystic echinococcosis by activating autophagy via regulating oxidative stress.

Spinal cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a rare but malignant zoonosis that can cause disability or even death in more than half of patients. Due to the complex pathological features, it is not curable by conventional drugs and surgery, so new therapeutic targets urgently need to be discovered. In this study, we clarify the occurrence of the phenomenon of spinal encapsulation angiogenesis and explore its underlying molecular mechanisms. A co-culture system was established by protoscoleces (PSCs) with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) which showed a high expression level of Nrf2. A sh

A Diagnostic Perplexity in Primary Pelvic Hydatid Disease, Mimicking Tumor and Tuberculosis: A Case Report.

The differential diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis should be considered in the suspected case of a pelvic mass presenting with vague symptoms. Primary pelvic hydatid cyst is rare, and the achievement of early diagnosis is important, as the involvement of bone in the pelvis is difficult to treat, and the probability of recurrences is greater. This case report presents a rare case of a primary pelvic hydatid cyst in a male in his 30s. The patient presented vague symptoms of difficulty in micturition and chronic pelvic pain. First-line radiological imaging techniques diagnosed it as a neoplastic

Surgical Management of Cystic Pelvic Hydatid Bone Disease Using Additively Manufactured Customized Implants for Salvage Reconstruction: A Report of Two Cases.

The diagnosis and treatment of pelvic bone hydatidosis (BH) present substantial challenges for orthopedic surgeons, requiring collaboration with parasitologists, radiologists, pathologists, and engineers. Surgical treatment selection depends on factors such as the extent of bone loss, soft tissue management, previously applied therapies, and local colonization status. This report details the advanced management of two young patients diagnosed late with severe cystic pelvic BH, an atypical presentation due to their geographic origin and age. Following extensive diagnostic assessments, including

Osteoarticular hydatid disease: Epidemiological features, diagnosis and treatment.

Osteoarticular hydatid disease is a very rare disease. Its diagnosis is challenging and often late because of the nonspecific clinical and radiological features. Through this study, we aim to describe the epidemiological, clinical and radiological features of a series of patients diagnosed with osteoarticular hydatid disease. Ten patients were included. The average age was 40,5 years [25-75]. The onset of symptoms was progressive in all cases with a mean diagnosis delay of 11 months [1-48]. Most frequent locations were spinal (n=7), pelvic (n=3) and costal (n=3). Hydatid serology was positive
