The many faces of pediatric hydatid disease: a pictorial review.

Hydatid disease, caused by the larval stages of Echinococcus species, poses a significant public health challenge, especially in resource-limited cattle-producing areas of South America. The number of cases in children under the age of 15 is nearly 16% of the total cases in South America according to the latest report of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The presentation of the disease depends on the anatomic location and correlates with the parasitic life stage. The liver is the most commonly affected organ in children, followed by the lungs, kidney, bone, and brain. The classifica

Bioinformatic features and immunological response of recombinant antigen CTLA4-IgV-EgG1Y162 against Echinococcus granulosus.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by the infection of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) larva. Currently, blocking the pathogenic cycle chain through immunoprophylaxis has become the main research direction. EgG1Y162 protein has good antigenicity and immunogenicity and is therefore a good candidate molecule for E. granulosus vaccine. Mature T cells express CTLA-4 on their surface, and its extracellular IgV region binds efficiently to the B7 molecules on antigen-presenting cells to deliver negative signals. We designed and prepared a recombinant vaccine by fusing CTL

Low-cost acrylic cranioplasty using an implant cast on a pre-printed 3D polylactic acid model in a child with a complicated osteolytic extradural hydatid cyst.

Cranioplasty to restore calvarial defects involves reconstruction with alloplastic materials or autologous tissues in order to provide the best protection to all intracranial contents. Sometimes, autologous bone may not be available; therefore, different materials have emerged such as polymethylmethacrylate plate, titanium mesh, and hydroxyapatite. However, when it is impossible to replace the autologous bone, the aesthetic result is generally unsatisfactory. Some techniques like neuronavigation and computer-aided design can help overcome these problems. However, these techniques cost too much

Mechanisms of Nrf2 suppression and Camkk1 upregulation in Echinococcus granulosus-induced bone loss.

Osteoclast differentiation is essential for maintaining bone metabolism, and its dysregulation, particularly in the context of Echinococcus granulosus (CE) infection, can lead to severe bone loss. This study explores a novel mechanism by which CE protoscolices (PSC) drive osteoclast differentiation through the inhibition of Nrf2, followed by the upregulation of Camkk1. Transcriptome sequencing revealed a significant down-regulation of Nrf2 in cells treated with PSC. This was confirmed by Western blot and Q-PCR assays showing reduced Nrf2 protein and gene levels. In vivo studies with Nrf2 knock

Natural history of Echinococcus granulosus microcyst development in long term in vitro culture and molecular and morphological changes induced by insulin and BMP-4.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) caused by the cestode Echinococcus granulosus is a disease of worldwide public health and economic importance. The determinants and underlying cellular mechanisms of CE development and fate in intermediate hosts are largely unknown. Hormones and cytokines such as insulin and BMP-4 are the key players in the development, differentiation, and apoptosis. In this study, we evaluated the long term natural history of E. granulosus microcysts in an vitro setting and the molecular and morphological changes induced by the growth factors, insulin and BMP4 during

Complete excision of giant clavicular hydatid cyst: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis, also known as hydatid disease, is a zoonotic parasitic disease prevalent in pastoral areas, mainly involving the liver and lungs, and less frequently the bones and surrounding soft tissues. Diagnosis and treatment of bone hydatid disease is a challenge, and because of the insidious course of the disease, the lesions are often widely disseminated by the time patients seek medical attention. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old woman presented with a painless mass that was gradually increasing in size in the cervical thorax. Imaging revealed an enlarged clavicle with mul

Transforming growth factor-β signalling regulates protoscolex formation in the Echinococcus multilocularis metacestode.

The lethal zoonosis alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is caused by tumor-like, infiltrative growth of the metacestode larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. We previously showed that the metacestode is composed of posteriorized tissue and that the production of the subsequent larval stage, the protoscolex, depends on re-establishment of anterior identities within the metacestode germinative layer. It is, however, unclear so far how protoscolex differentiation in Echinococcus is regulated. We herein characterized the full complement of E. multilocularis TGFβ/BMP receptors, which i

Hydatid Disease of Tibia Reconstructed with Allograft: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease of bone shows a well-defined, multiloculated lytic lesion with the appearance of a bunch of grapes. The presenting symptoms are pain and swelling with or without pathological fracture. The treatment options include surgery followed by a long duration of albendazole. Removal of the involved bone is required to decrease the chances of recurrences. CASE REPORT: In our study, we have included a case of 28-year-old woman presented with complaints of pain and difficulty in weight bearing over her right lower limb for 2.5 months. Radiograph suggested an eccentric lytic le

A case of pediatric primary osteolytic extradural and complicated hydatid cyst revealed by a skull vault swelling.

Hydatidosis is a parasitic infestation whose etiological agent is the larva of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus. It is a zoonosis, and the human being behaves as an accidental intermediate host in the parasitic cycle with pediatric predominance. The most frequent clinical presentation is hepatic, followed by pulmonary, with cerebral hydatidosis being extremely rare. Imaging is characteristic, generally dealing with single cystic lesion, usually unilocular and less frequently multilocular, located mainly intraaxially. Extradural hydatid cyst, whether primary or secondary, remains very rare o

Non-resectable pulmonary alveolar echinococcosis with multi-stage vertebral location.

Alveolar echinococcosis (also known as Hydatid cyst or Hydatydosis) is a zoonosis with a high degree of disability and morbidity. Bone echinococcosis is a rare presentation. Authors are always defending a personalized approach taking account of the particularities of the cyst location. Recognition of this syndrome is crucial because advances in medical and surgical management strategies have controlled and relieved symptoms in numerous cases. We report, hereby, a case of a patient with a thoracic spine alveolar echinococcosis of an unusual extension. We discussed the outcome of the treatment a

Osseous hydatid disease: A mimic of other skeletal pathologies.

Hydatid disease is still endemic in several regions worldwide including Morocco, and is caused in most cases by the larval form of 2 species of the tapeworm Echinococcus: E. granulosus and E. multilocularis. Primary hydatid disease of the bone without systemic involvement is rare. The disease has a silent clinical evolution until it reaches complicated stages. Complications may include pathological fracture, neural deficit, infection, and fistulization of the abscess. Preoperative diagnosis is based on clinical history, imaging findings, and serological tests, which lack high sensitivity and s
