Evaluation of hanging deaths in childhood: An autopsy study.

INTRODUCTION: Hanging is defined as a form of asphyxia caused by the suspension of the body with a ligature around the neck, where the constriction is generated by the body's own weight. The aim of this study is to examine autopsy findings in hanging cases among children, a rare cause of death in this age group, using data collected from a forensic autopsy center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted by reviewing electronic autopsy reports of pediatric cases referred to the Morgue Department between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2021, for the determination of the

A Comparative Analysis of the Efficacy of CD117 and Special Stains as Indicators of Mechanical Asphyxial Deaths.

BACKGROUND: Determining the cause of death in suspected asphyxia is often difficult when external findings are absent. Mast cells (MCs) may provide objective histological evidence of hypoxia. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of immunohistochemistry (IHC) using CD117 with Toluidine Blue (TB) and Giemsa (GM) stains in detecting mast cells in asphyxial and non-asphyxial lung tissues. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lung samples from 164 medicolegal autopsies at AIIMS Jodhpur were studied, 57 asphyxial and 107 non-asphyxial deaths. Peribronchial and perialveolar regions were examined using TB, GM, and

Introduction of central fetal monitoring and impact on neonatal outcome - a retrospective observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiotocography (CTG) is used for fetal surveillance to prevent asphyxia related neonatal outcomes during pregnancy and delivery. In Sweden, all delivery wards have transitioned from CTG registered and printed on paper inside the delivery room, to digital central fetal monitoring where CTG is visible both in the delivery room and on distance for multiple observers. We aimed to evaluate whether the transition from CTG on paper to central fetal monitoring has affected neonatal morbidity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted as a retrospective cohort study. Data from 8577

Influence of Intra-Arrest Glucose on Patient Outcomes in Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac arrest leads to an array of metabolic disturbances, including glucose metabolism. Intra-arrest blood glucose level (BGL) is rarely reported in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) literature, and the influence of BGL on patient outcomes has yet to be conclusively established. To describe the interrelationship between intra-arrest BGL, dextrose administration, and short-term outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the 2020 ESO Data Collaborative Annual Research dataset was conducted that included adults who experienced non-traumatic arrests prior to emergency medica

Unraveling Riboflavin-Mediated Mitochondrial Modulation as a Therapeutic Pathway in Neurological Disorders: An Integrative Systematic Review.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is recognized as a key pathophysiological mechanism in neurodegenerative diseases. Alterations in mitochondrial dynamics-including imbalances in fission and fusion, impaired biogenesis, and disrupted mitophagy-contribute to the onset and progression of neurological disorders. In this context, mitochondrial modulation has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy. This systematic review examined the role of riboflavin, a water-soluble vitamin and essential mitochondrial cofactor, in neurological interventions through mitochondrial modulation, with emphasis on elucida

Emergency care for avalanche buried patients - a narrative review.

Avalanches claim the lives of around 160 winter recreationists and workers in hazardous snow-covered mountain regions worldwide. These fatalities result from asphyxia, trauma, and hypothermia. Survival for critically buried subjects relies on the speed of extrication, absence of trauma, presence of a patent airway and air pocket, immediate field treatment, and rapid transport to the most appropriate hospital by organized search and rescue (SAR) and emergency medical services (EMS). Survival may be improved with helicopter EMS, advancements in safety and rescue equipment technology, early deplo

Death by hanging: possibilities and limits of medico-legal evidence.

In forensic medicine, hanging is a frequent cause of non-natural death which may pose diagnostic problems on the investigator due to the manifold and sometimes ambiguous autopsy findings. The great variability of appearances potentially impedes the classification as to the manner of death (suicide, accident, homicide). The significance of some signs formerly considered to prove vital suspension could not always be confirmed in more recent studies. Therefore, traditional conception passed on from generation to generation must be critically questioned and, if necessary, replaced by evidence-base

Tracheal mucosal necrosis and sloughing after accidental endotracheal extubation in a child: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Airway obstruction caused by the detachment of obstructing fibrinous tracheal pseudomembrane (OFTP) secondary to airway mucosal injury from endotracheal intubation is extremely rare in clinical practice. Due to the non-specific clinical manifestations and low incidence of this disease, most clinicians tend to overlook it, lack vigilance, and find it difficult to make a definite diagnosis immediately when symptoms appear. After the tracheal mucosa is injured and detached, it can form a valvular obstruction that blocks airway ventilation, leading to obvious dyspnea, acute respirato

Analysis of First and Second Sleep Environments in Unexplained Sudden Deaths in Infants Based on Scene Reenactment Data.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that a safe sleep environment consist of an infant lying supine on a separate, uncluttered, approved sleep surface. Infant awakenings may lead to moving the infant from the initial sleep environment to a second one. The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner electronic database was searched from 2018 through 2022 for infant deaths with non-homicidal manner in which scene reenactments were performed; 87 such deaths were identified. The most common causes of death were unsafe sleep environments (64.4%) and asphyxia (21.8%). Of the tot

Integrated histological, biochemical and molecular analysis of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) responses to acute hypoxic stress.

Hypoxia critically impacts grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) aquaculture, causing oxidative damage, mortality and economic losses. This study revealed the physiological and genetic response mechanisms of grass carp under hypoxic stress by integrating histology, biochemistry and miRNA-mRNA network analysis. The experimental individuals were confined in sealed containers with pre-aerated water, allowing dissolved oxygen (DO) to decline naturally, and three groups were established: Normoxia (DO: 7.99 ± 0.43 mg∙L-1; control), Hypoxia (DO: 0.88 ± 0.16 mg∙L-1; upward swimming and gulping), and As

Impact of resuscitation-trained healthcare workforce availability on neonatal asphyxia mortality: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Intrapartum events cause approximately 900,000 neonatal deaths annually worldwide. This study investigated whether the number of healthcare providers trained in resuscitation at the municipal level is associated with decreased neonatal mortality due to perinatal asphyxia. METHODS: This population-based study analyzed neonatal deaths with birth weight ≥1500 g without congenital anomalies in São Paulo State, Brazil (2011-2020). Deaths were classified as asphyxia-associated when ICD-10 codes indicating intrauterine hypoxia, birth asphyxia, or neonatal meconium aspiration appeared on

Diagnostic pitfalls and forensic implications of hyperactive delirium with severe agitation: an Italian case series.

Hyperactive Delirium with Severe Agitation (HDSA) is characterized by disorientation and aggressive behavior, constituting an acute, life-threatening medical emergency that requires prompt intervention. It is frequently associated with substance use. In prehospital settings, management often involves physical restraint, force, or pharmacological sedation; however, the diagnostic criteria and medico-legal implications of HDSA remain insufficiently defined. We retrospectively analyzed seven fatal cases exhibiting HDSA presentations, as defined by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACE

Advancing understanding of the mechanisms of autism spectrum disorder through perinatal risk factors.

Advances in elucidating the genetic etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have significantly enhanced our understanding of its neurodevelopmental underpinnings. However, given the considerable heterogeneity and complexity of ASD, environmental factors also play a critical role in affecting the fetus directly or interacting with genetic susceptibilities to contribute to ASD-related developmental impairments. Epidemiological studies indicate that children exposed to perinatal complications, such as gestational diabetes, birth asphyxia, and preeclampsia, have a higher likelihood of being dia
