Ruptured primary intrahepatic ectopic pregnancy: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary hepatic ectopic pregnancy is an exceptionally rare subtype of abdominal ectopic pregnancy and carries a very high risk of catastrophic hemorrhage. Due to its atypical clinical presentation and unusual implantation site, diagnosis is often delayed, leading to significant maternal morbidity and mortality. CASE SUMMARY: A woman of reproductive age presented with acute upper abdominal pain and hemorrhagic shock. Pregnancy testing was positive, and transabdominal ultrasonography revealed massive hemoperitoneum with the absence of intrauterine gestation. Focused abdominal ultras

Diagnostic errors in abdominal pain: a secondary analysis of case reports.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnostic errors remain common in abdominal pain, a frequent yet challenging presentation. We sought to compare diagnostic error profiles between abdominal and non-abdominal pain and to identify abdominal pain-specific, potentially modifiable targets in physical examination, diagnostic testing, and differential diagnosis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective secondary analysis of a systematically coded database of diagnostic error case reports. Adult pain cases were categorized as abdominal or non-abdominal after excluding pediatric and non-pain cases. Errors were classified usi

Hollow viscus perforation secondary to brucellosis: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Brucellosis, a zoonotic infection, rarely causes hollow viscus perforation. This case highlights ileal perforation in a patient with pre-diagnosed brucellosis, which reinforces the importance of early surgical evaluation in an acute abdomen. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A young male with confirmed brucellosis (positive IgM serology) presented with fever and arthralgia. On day 2 of admission, he developed sudden severe abdominal pain, guarding, and rigidity. Imaging revealed pneumoperitoneum, prompting emergency laparotomy, which identified an ileal perforation. Wedge resection and anas

The Impact of Operative Timing on Postoperative Complications in Laparoscopic Appendectomy for Uncomplicated Acute Appendicitis: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis (AA) is one of the most common surgical conditions presenting as acute abdomen. Delaying appendectomy can increase the risk of perforation. However, patients admitted or treated at night have been found to have higher complication rates compared to those treated during the daytime. This study aims to investigate whether the time of day of laparoscopic appendectomy for AA has a significant effect on morbidity and mortality rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients over 18 years of age who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy for uncomplicated AA at the General Surger

Severe maternal morbidity from conception to 6 weeks postpartum in Ontario: a population-based, longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although severe maternal morbidity (SMM), such as severe hemorrhage and sepsis, can occur from conception to 6 weeks postpartum, most surveillance studies in Canada are restricted to intrapartum cases, with rates approximating 17 per 1000 births. We aimed to characterize the frequency of SMM from conception to 6 weeks postpartum and describe its associations with maternal and clinical characteristics. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of births at 20 or more weeks' gestation, using administrative data in Ontario (2012 to 2021), and identified SMM using the Cana

Jejunal Diverticulitis: A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Overview.

Jejunal diverticulitis is a rare and often underdiagnosed condition characterized by inflammation of jejunal diverticula, more commonly seen in elderly patients with comorbidities. While most cases remain asymptomatic and are incidentally discovered during imaging studies, some patients may present with nonspecific symptoms such as abdominal pain and discomfort. The diagnosis is challenging due to its low prevalence and non-specific clinical presentation, often mimicking other causes of acute abdomen like appendicitis or colonic diverticulitis. Computed tomography with intravenous contrast is

Diagnostic challenge: functional non-communicating rudimentary horn with ovarian endometriosis and ipsilateral renal agenesis.

A teenage girl presented with sudden lower abdominal pain following exercise, prompting initial consideration of ovarian cyst rupture by the attending emergency physician. However, the presence of unilateral renal absence on Computed Tomography (CT) imaging strongly suggested a reproductive tract malformation, later confirmed by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Surgical exploration during laparotomy revealed a functional non-communicating rudimentary horn with associated ovarian endometriosis, in the setting of chronic dysmenorrhea. This rare case underscores the essentiality of comprehensive
