INTRODUCTION: Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus, most commonly affecting the liver and lungs. Extra-hepatic and multi-organ involvement is uncommon and can present major diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report a rare case of disseminated hydatidosis with multiple visceral and pelvic localizations.
CASE PRESENTATION: A patient presented with abdominal pain and found to have multiple cystic lesions on imaging. Further evaluation revealed hepatic, pancreatic, splenic, pelvic, and pulmonary hydatid cysts. Surgical management was tailored according

The first Korean case of Echinococcus multilocularis interpreted the probable origin of the isolate on the basis of cox1 sequence similarity, originally reporting 99.8%-99.9% similarity to Asian isolates and 99.5%-99.6% similarity to European isolates. To examine whether this similarity-based interpretation remains epidemiologically informative, we re-evaluated currently available cox1 sequences with high sequence identity at the accession level. Using AB780998.1 as the query, BLAST hits with ≥99.5% identity were collected, and 110 non-self accessions were manually annotated according to clade

BACKGROUND: Lymph node metastasis is a specific type of metastasis in hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE). Currently, there is a scarcity of describing the clinical characteristics and lymph node metastasis rules of patients with hepatic AE combined with lymph node metastasis and its mechanism and management are still controversial. Radical hepatectomy combined with regional lymph node dissection is a better treatment.
AIM: To analyse the clinical features of hepatic AE combined with lymph node metastasis to explore its treatment and efficacy.
METHODS: A total of 623 patients with hepatic A

Adenylate kinases (ADKs) are one of the important enzymes regulating adenosine triphosphate (ATP) metabolism in Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. The objective of the present study was to explore the molecular characteristics and immunological properties of E. granulosus sensu stricto (G1) adenylate kinase 1 (EgADK1) and adenylate kinase 8 (EgADK8). EgADK1 and EgADK8 were cloned and expressed, and the molecular characteristics of EgADK1 and EgADK8 were analyzed through different bioinformatics tools. Western blotting was used to examine the reactogenicity of recombinant adenylate kinase 1 (r

The peritoneum is a unique serosal membrane, which can be the site of primary tumors and, more commonly, secondary pathologic processes. Peritoneal carcinomatosis is the most common malignant condition to affect the peritoneal cavity, and the radiologist plays an important role in making the diagnosis and assessing the extent of disease, especially in sites that may hinder surgery. In this review, we address the role of the radiologist in the setting of peritoneal pathology, focusing on peritoneal carcinomatosis as this is the predominant malignant process, followed by revising typical imaging

Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of human alveolar echinococcosis, is an important emerging parasite in the northern hemisphere. In epidemiological studies, the highest attention is being paid to foxes as the main reservoir hosts responsible for geographic expansion from multiple focal populations and the invasion of urban habitats, but little information is available on the parasite distribution in other carnivores. Hence, the study was designed to obtain updated information about the occurrence and genetic diversity of E. multilocularis in grey wolves and dogs in Slovakia. Fa

We report the case of an adolescent Moroccan girl with abdominal pain and palpable mass in the upper right side of the abdomen. In the emergency department, an abdominal ultrasound showed hepatomegaly and eight active liver cysts, compatible with cystic echinococcosis. Serology for Echinococcus granulosus confirmed the diagnosis. Other sites of localization were excluded. Treatment involved albendazole combined with puncture, aspiration, injection, re-aspiration, performed only for the most medial cysts. Periodical follow-up with abdominal ultrasound and with abdominal magnetic resonance imagi

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Although the liver and lung are the most common sites of hydatid disease, it can also be seen in other organs due to migration via systemic circulation. Paraspinal lumbar hydatid disease without the involvement of other organs is extremely rare. We aimed to present the imaging and histopathological findings of a case with painful lumbar swelling that was later diagnosed as primary lumbar paraspinal hydatid disease. Hydatid disease should be considered as the differential diagnosis in patients with a lumbar paraspinal m

Hydatid disease (HD) is a parasitic infection caused by the larvae of a tapeworm that is endemic to many regions around the world-South America, Africa, and Asia, in particular. Humans are infected as intermediate hosts in the parasite's life cycle; thus, HD can be seen in persons living in areas where animal husbandry is practiced. However, owing to the varied patterns of migration and immigration during the past several decades, HD can be diagnosed in individuals living anywhere. The liver is the most common organ involved, with hepatic HD accounting for the majority of published cases. Howe

Cyst echinococcosis caused by the matacestodal larvae of Echinococcus granulosus (Eg), is a chronic, worldwide, and severe zoonotic parasitosis. The treatment of cyst echinococcosis is still difficult since surgery cannot fit the needs of all patients, and drugs can lead to serious adverse events as well as resistance. The screen of target proteins interacted with new anti-hydatidosis drugs is urgently needed to meet the prevailing challenges. Here, we analyzed the sequences and structure properties, and constructed a phylogenetic tree by bioinformatics methods. The MIP family signature and Pr

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) or hydatid disease is a neglected, economically important zoonotic disease endemic in pastoralist communities, in particular the Turkana community of Kenya. It is caused by the larval stage of the highly diverse species complex of Echinococcusgranulosus sensu lato (s.l). The situation on the genetic diversity in humans in Kenya is not well established.
OBJECTIVE: To characterise Echinococcus granulosus (s.1) species/strains isolated from humans undergoing surgery in Turkana, Kenya.
DESIGN: A Cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis caused by the cestodes of the Echinococcus species. Its life cycle involves dogs and other canids as definitive hosts for the intestinal tapeworm, as well as domestic and wild ungulates as intermediate hosts for the tissue-invading metacestode (larval) stage. The disease has a special impact on disadvantaged pastoralist communities and is listed now among the three top priority neglected tropical disease (NTD). Therefore, CE is a neglected disease even in high endemicity regions. This study aimed at investigation of the prevalence of CE in d

A 13-year (1990-2003) retrospective study was carried out to investigate the occurrence of cystic echinococcosis (CE) in patients at Wasso hospital in Ngorongoro district, Tanzania. Hospitalization records were reviewed and confirmed cases of CE were classified according to ward of residence, age, sex, cyst location and type. A total of 171 hydatidosis patients were diagnosed and operated giving an average of 13 cases per year, equivalent to approximately 10 cases per 100,000 people per year. Cystic echinococcosis affected more females (59.1%) than males (40.9%). A significantly higher number

Although the liver and lung are by far the most common localizations for the larval cysts of Echinococcus granulosus in humans, the cysts may develop in other sites and there cause signs and symptoms that may be easily confused with those of other illnesses. In a retrospective study in Turkey, six male and 11 female cases of cystic echinococcosis, each with at least one cyst in an unusual site, were investigated. The patients, who had a mean age of 41.6 years, had cysts in the pancreas, intra-abdominal cavity, kidney, spleen, ovary, breast, mediastinum, chest wall, muscle and/or subcutaneous t

The aim of this study is to describe an alternative technique, using radio frequency energy to perform pericystectomy for hepatic echinococcosis. We present 3 patients with hepatic echinococcosis who were treated with radio frequency ablation (RFA)-assisted pericystectomy. A Radionics Cooltip Radio Frequency System (Tyco, Greece, Radionics) with a single shaft 15 cm long needle electrode and a 2 cm exposure tip, was used. The needle electrode was inserted in consecutive sites into the "Работает" hepatic parenchyma close to the cyst wall, so that a tissue zone around the cystic cavity was gradua

OBJECTIVE: Cystic hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection of humans caused by infection with the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. The prevalence rate (5-10%) in Turkana, Northern Kenya is among the highest worldwide. With an increase in foreign travel and migration of peoples, practitioners need to be aware of diseases common in these countries and their rarer manifestations. The objective of this study was to review the management of this disease in a poorly resourced high-prevalence area.
METHODS: The surgical records of Kakuma Mission Hospital, Turkana from July 1981 to May 2002 we
