The neuroinvasive potential of SARS-CoV2 may play a role in the respiratory failure of COVID-19 patients.

Following the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), another highly pathogenic coronavirus named SARS-CoV-2 (previously known as 2019-nCoV) emerged in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and rapidly spreads around the world. This virus shares highly homological sequence with SARS-CoV, and causes acute, highly lethal pneumonia coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with clinical symptoms similar to those reported for SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. The most characteristic symptom of patients with COVID-19 is respiratory distress, and

Meningomyeloencephalitis secondary to Mycobacterium haemophilum infection in AIDS.

Infections by opportunistic non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are rising in global incidence. One emerging, slowly growing NTM is Mycobacterium haemophilum, which can cause skin, lung, bone, and soft tissue infections in immunocompromised patients as well as lymphadenitis in immunocompetent individuals. Detection of this microorganism is difficult using conventional culture-based methods and few reports have documented involvement of this pathogen within the central nervous system (CNS).We describe the neuropathologic autopsy findings of a 39-year-old man with AIDS who died secondary to M. ha

SARS-CoV-2 Infection Leads to Neurological Dysfunction.

A number of neurological disease complications have been seen following infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). While most person with COVID-19 respiratory disease demonstrate headache, nausea and vomiting, up to 40% present also experience dizziness, confusion, cerebrovascular disease, muscle pain, ataxia and seizures. Loss of taste and smell, defects in visual acuity and pain occur in parallel. Such central nervous system (CNS) signs and symptoms linked to laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection is often life threatening. Health care providers curre

SARS-CoV-2-mediated encephalitis: Role of AT2R receptors in the blood-brain barrier.

At the end of 2019, there was an outbreak of a new Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19 disease). Studies suggest that SARS-CoV-2 can cause infection in the central nervous system (CNS) and trigger neurological symptoms that include headache, nausea and vomiting, mental confusion and loss of smell or taste. These findings reveal that Coronaviruses have neurological tropism and neuroinvasive capacity. The spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the brain tissue possibly occurs through the systemic circulation as reported in patients affected by SARS-CoV. Evidence highlights similarity between the SARS-CoV genome and SAR

[Cytotoxic lesion of the corpus callosum (CLOCC) in a context of viral meningitis].

We report the case of a young patient of 16 years admitted in the emergency department for headache, nausea and vomiting, of brutal installation. After clinico-biological confrontation, the diagnosis of viral meningitis (aseptic) was made. During the initial assessment several complementary examinations and various brain imaging exams (CT, MRI) were performed in the course of the treatment, showing a focal lesion of the splenium of the corpus callosum, with transient aspect and spontaneously resolving during iterative control. MRI is the modality that formally revealed this callosal lesion. In

Cardiac tamponade secondary to leptospirosis. A rare association: A case report.

Herein is described the case of a 39-year-old female agronomist who was admitted to hospital after a syncopal episode. She had had fever, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting for the previous month. The patient showed signs of hypoperfusion, so a trans-thoracic echocardiography was done, demonstrating the presence of a cardiac tamponade. An emergency pericardiocentesis was performed, draining 500 ml of hematic content. Thoracic-abdominal computed tomography showed bilateral pleural effusion and also peritoneal effusion. Laboratory tests were compatible with an inflammatory situation with neutr

Understanding COVID-19 in the light of epidemic disease described in Unani medicine.

Unani system of medicine is based on the humoral theory postulated by Hippocrates, according to him the state of body health and disease are regulated by qualitative and quantitative equilibrium of four humours. Amraz-e-Waba is an umbrella term which is used in Unani medicine for all types of epidemics (smallpox, measles, plague, Hameer Saifi, influenza, Nipaha, Ebola, Zika, and 2019 novel coronavirus, etc.) mostly fatal in nature. Paraplegia from spinal intramedullary tuberculosis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) mostly attacks the lungs, and extrapulmonary TB involving the central nervous system is uncommon; among these cases, spinal intramedullary TB is even more rare. The clinical manifestations of spinal intramedullary TB are similar to those of intramedullary spinal cord tumors. Therefore, it is necessary to make a careful differential diagnosis of spinal intramedullary lesions to achieve the appropriate treatment and favorable prognosis. We report a rare case of a young male patient with paraplegia due to spinal intramedullary TB, which is uncommon and regrettable.

Botulism.

AUDIENCE: This simulation is targeted to emergency medicine residents and medical students. This case focuses on the diagnosis and management of botulism toxicity, while highlighting the logistical complications of botulism toxicity. INTRODUCTION: Botulism is a potentially life-threatening emergency that often presents with subtle symptoms, which can progress to paralysis and respiratory failure. A descending flaccid paralysis is typical, initially affecting smaller muscles such as oculomotor, then larger facial muscles. 1,2 Early indications of respiratory compromise are important to recogni

Design of a zero-order sustained release PLGA microspheres for palonosetron hydrochloride with high encapsulation efficiency.

Efficient encapsulation of hydrophilic drugs was substantially challenging when using emulsion solvent evaporation approach. The aim of present study was to design palonosetron hydrochloride-loaded PLGA microspheres (Pal-MS) with high encapsulation efficiency (EE) to sustain drug release for over several days. Pal-MS were prepared using emulsion-solvent evaporation method. Results showed that the pH of external phase could significantly affect the EE and the drug release rate of Pal-MS. By increasing the pH of external phase from 5.0 to 10.0, EE of Pal-MS increased from 55.64% to 94.33%. When

Dose Ginger Have Preventative Effects on PONV-Related Eye Surgery? A Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is considered a common complication of anesthesia, which, particularly in eye surgery, may exert pressure on stitches and open or leak the surgical wound, leading to bleeding. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to study the effect of ginger on PONV and changes in vital signs after eye surgery. METHODS: In this triple-blind randomized controlled trial, 120 candidate patients for eye surgery were divided into group A (n = 40) and group B (n = 40). Patients in group A received the capsules of ginger 1 g while patients in group B received a placebo one hour

Comparison of Ondansetron and Granisetron Effects for Prevention of Nausea and Vomiting Following Strabismus Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common complaint after strabismus surgery that leads to unpleasantness, increased hospitalisation time and increased costs. In severe cases, it can lead to dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, aspiration, pneumonia, and even sutures opening. AIM: This study was conducted to compare the effects of both ondansetron and granisetron on the reduction of PONV after strabismus surgery. METHODS: This randomised, and the double-blind clinical study was conducted on patients with ASA I and II undergoing strabismus surgery with age over 3 year

Duodenal Crohn's Disease Complicated by Pancreatitis and Common Bile Duct Obstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Crohn's disease (CD) is characterized by segmental and transmural involvement of any portion of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus. Duodenal CD is a rare clinical entity, with the majority of the patients being symptomless - its diagnosis requires a high level of clinical suspicion. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 29-year-old male patient with a 2-month history of weight loss, epigastric pain and postprandial vomiting. He underwent upper endoscopy, which revealed a circumferential duodenal ulcer causing non-transposable luminal stenosis and was med
