Self-medication among kidney transplant patients may pose a risk to the graft. This study examined the prevalence of self-medication in patients who had undergone kidney transplantation. These patients, receiving immunosuppressive therapy, are informed during post-transplant therapeutic education about the risks associated with drug interactions. This prospective single-center study, including 66 patients, shows that 80.3% of participants reported self-medicating one month after hospital discharge, with 18.2% engaging in practices deemed “risky”. Self-medication mainly involved analgesics, inc

Esophageal symptoms, including dysphagia, heartburn, and non-cardiac chest pain, are prevalent concerns in gastroenterology. This review examines the roles of advanced diagnostic modalities such as high-resolution manometry (HRM), pH-impedance monitoring, and EndoFLIP in understanding esophageal physiology and pathology. Here, we discuss the clinical presentations of common esophageal symptoms and explore how structural abnormalities like strictures and motility disorders, including achalasia and esophageal spasms, are assessed using these tools. The diagnostic utility of endoscopy in visualiz

OBJECTIVE: Nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux (nGER) was reported to be associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, pathophysiological traits in OSA patients with nGER were poorly understood, and arousal threshold (ArTH) might play an important role in this relationship. This study aimed to identify the clinical characteristics of patients with OSA comorbid with nGER, and investigate the association between ArTH and nGER in patients with OSA.
METHODS: 482 adult patients with OSA diagnosed by polysomnography (PSG) at Peking University People's Hospital were recruited in this cross-s

INTRODUCTION: Wireless esophageal pH monitoring is used to diagnose gastroesophageal reflux disease in patients with heartburn. Current studies are conflicting on the effect of sedation on acid reflux. The aim of our study was to determine if the type of sedation used during endoscopy or lack of it affects the first day of esophageal acid exposure results as compared to the second day.
METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent a 48-h or 96-h wireless pH capsule study to assess heartburn symptoms were included. Those who underwent the study under monitored anesthesia care (MAC), moderate sed

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS) contribute to the morbidity of Parkinson's disease (PD), with limited specific assessment tools.
OBJECTIVE: This multicenter study aimed to translate and validate the Gastrointestinal Dysfunction Scale for PD (GIDS-PD) into an Arabic version and to investigate the characteristics of GIS and its correlates.
METHODS: A total of 162 patients with PD and 165 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were assessed using the GIDS-PD. Arabic version was assessed for test-retest reliability, construct validity, convert validity, and floor or ceiling effects. P

The exact worldwide prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) remains uncertain, despite its recognition as a common condition. This conundrum arises primarily from the lack of a standardized definition for GERD. The gold standard diagnostic tests for GERD, such as pH impedance testing and endoscopy, are cumbersome and impractical for assessing community prevalence. Consequently, most epidemiological studies rely on symptom-based screening tools. GERD symptoms can be both esophageal and extraesophageal, varying widely among individuals. This variability has led to multiple symptom-b

BACKGROUND: Abnormal gastric acid reflux into the esophagus causes symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) such as heartburn and regurgitation and also leads to mucosal damage. This damage can further lead to complications such as Barrett's esophagus and esophagitis. Conventional proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) often fail to reduce nocturnal acid production, leaving patients with unresolved symptoms that worsen at night and decreased satisfaction. Happi ER, a novel dual delayed-release (DDR) formulation of rabeprazole, aims to address these limitations by providing both immediate and

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common complaint seen in medical clinics today, affecting countless people worldwide. Patients can present with a wide array of symptoms, ranging from classical complaints like heartburn and acid reflux to atypical cases like silent GERD. Recent advancements in diagnostic testing and imaging have aided in diagnosing and understanding GERD. Given the prevalence of GERD and stress within the confines of our society, it is pertinent to establish a correlation between these two, which this study aimed to investigate.
METHODS: A cross-section

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder globally, exhibits variable prevalence across regions, with higher frequencies observed in Western nations and lower in Asian countries. Key contributing factors encompass unhealthy eating patterns, tobacco use, consumption of alcohol, excess weight, and obesity, along with health conditions such as gestation and diabetes. Common manifestations include heartburn and a burning discomfort behind the breastbone, which, without appropriate management, can progress to more severe issues like esophagitis and Ba

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a prevalent chronic digestive disorder with a rising incidence rate, profoundly affecting patients' quality of life. The condition is marked by recurrent episodes of acid reflux and heartburn, which can compromise the esophageal mucosal barrier and trigger inflammatory responses in the esophagus. Mucins (MUC), essential components of the mucus gel layer, play a vital role in protecting the esophageal mucosa and may serve as potential biomarkers for GERD diagnosis and treatment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the MUC family's structure

Yeast mannans (YM) are potential prebiotics that may improve laxation. The aim was to evaluate the effects of YM on gastrointestinal symptoms, with a hypothesis of high tolerance. A secondary aim assessed stool frequency. Fecal microbiota composition (16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing) and targeted urine metabolites (LC-MS/MS) were explored. An ex vivo simulation of digestion and fermentation (6 donors) compared YM to the reference prebiotic inulin followed by an open-label pilot study, with a 1-week baseline and 2-week intervention of 15 g/d of YM. Ex vivo findings showed increased Bacteroide

BACKGROUND: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has highlighted the potential exacerbation of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs). However, the distinct symptom trajectories and psychological burden in patients with post-COVID-19 DGBIs compared with patients with pre-existing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)/functional dyspepsia (FD) and non-DGBI controls remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the long-term gastrointestinal symptom progression and psychological comorbidities in patients with post-C
