Does helicobacter pylori infection impact reflux symptoms after sleeve gastrectomy? A pilot study using patient reported outcome measures (PROMs).

BACKGROUND: The association between Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and gastrointestinal symptoms after metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is poorly understood. While sleeve gastrectomy (SG) can exacerbate reflux, there is limited literature evaluating the impact of HP infection on post-SG symptoms. We hypothesize that HP-positive SG patients will experience worse post-operative reflux and eating-related (ER) symptoms. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study comparing post-operative PROMs (patient-reported outcome measures) surveys was performed for HP-positive vs. HP-negative SG

The Impact of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease on Quality of Life Among Obese Individuals in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

Background Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a widespread digestive condition globally, with obesity being a significant risk factor. GERD symptoms, such as heartburn and acid reflux, are caused by abnormal relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. Chronic symptoms can negatively impact quality of life (QoL) and may lead to complications such as esophageal adenocarcinoma. Objectives To assess the prevalence of GERD in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia among obese and non-obese individuals and to examine its impact on Q

[Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease-update 2025 : Revision taking into consideration the European CEORL-HNS guideline].

Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD), a common condition with a variety of symptoms, often occurs without heartburn. One of the main causes appears to be the pepsin effect. Systematic recording of symptoms and findings confirms the suspected diagnosis. A patient-individualized multimodal therapy plan can quickly provide relief. Lifestyle modifications and treatment with alginate and proton pump inhibitors are often effective. Carcinophobic patients with foreign body sensation should be informed in detail and, in case of doubt, malignancy should be ruled out. This CME training course provide

Diagnosis and Management of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Current Insights.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) results from retrograde movement of gastric content into the esophagus and beyond, resulting in symptoms, mucosal injury and long-term complications. Typical symptoms of heartburn and regurgitation are highly suggestive of GERD, but atypical presentations require careful evaluation to rule out alternative diagnoses. Diagnostic modalities, including endoscopy, ambulatory reflux monitoring, and high-resolution manometry, play a pivotal role in confirming GERD and guiding personalized treatment. Management strategies consist of lifestyle modifications, pharm

Exploratory analyses of meal-induced heartburn identify distinct clinical phenotypes of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Symptoms in symptomatic GERD patients result from esophageal acid exposure and are treated with agents that inhibit gastric acid secretion. We analyzed data from a clinical trial evaluating the effect of ranitidine plus antacid on heartburn severity in GERD patients. After 26 subjects ingested a standard meal and received either placebo or ranitidine-antacid, heartburn severity (assessed via a visual analog scale), esophageal pH, and gastric pH were measured at 15-min intervals. Two phenotypes emerged based on heartburn severity patterns: "Persistent Heartburn" (PH), characterized by sustained

Consensus on Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Key Performance Indicators to Reduce Post Endoscopy Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy lacks established key performance indicators. Up to three-fold variation in post endoscopy upper gastrointestinal cancer rates has been observed among endoscopy providers in England, highlighting the need for standardisation of UGI endoscopy practices. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to achieve consensus on evidence-based key performance indicators to reduce post endoscopy upper gastrointestinal cancer. METHODS: Modified nominal group technique was employed in two consensus workshops, with representation from clinicians, patients and relatives, moderate

Gut-Brain Axis and Migraine: Rates of Improvement and Predictors of Response After a Low-FODMAP, Low-Starch and Low-Sucrose Dietary Intervention.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of diets on patients with migraine remain elusive. We aimed to determine rates of improvement and predictors of response of migraine after an intensive dietary intervention. METHODS: We performed a quasi-experimental pre-post study including patients with self-reported digestive functional disorders and migraine undertaking a social-media based program with a 2-week dietary intervention (low-FODMAP, low-starch and low- sucrose diet). Migraine improvement was defined as a decrease of at least 50% in intensity or frequency of headaches. Independent variables associated

Step-Down Therapy Using Vonoprazan for Giant Gastric Polyps in Long-Term Proton Pump Inhibitor Administration.

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is diagnosed based on bothersome symptoms, such as heartburn, and the presence of mucosal breaks endoscopically. Treatments that suppress gastric acid, such as proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and vonoprazan, are frequently administered. Several studies reported regarding the safety and side effects of long-term PPI administration, including an association with gastric polyps. We report a case of maintained symptom resolution and significantly shrank gastric polyps by performing step-down therapy, which is minimal acid-suppressing treatment. CAS

Functional Esophageal Disorders in Children.

Functional esophageal disorders (FEDs) involve esophageal symptoms not explained by mechanical obstructions, major esophageal motor disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, or mucosal inflammation. Symptoms can include dysphagia, heartburn, chest pain, and/or globus sensation. FEDs are categorized as pain-predominant or dysphagia-predominant disorders. The pain-predominant diagnoses are non-erosive reflux disease, reflux hypersensitivity, and functional heartburn.

Comparable efficacy of generic and original alginate for symptom control in PPI-refractory GERD.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a prevalent global condition, affecting 18.1-27.8% of North Americans and 6.3-18.3% of the Thai population. While proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the first-line treatment, only about one-third of patients achieve adequate symptom control. Alginate-based medications in combination with PPIs have shown promise, but the comparative effectiveness of generic versus original alginates remains unexplored. To compare the effectiveness of generic alginate (ONE GERD) versus original alginate (Gaviscon Dual Action Suspension) in combination with PPIs for treati

Evaluating the long-term efficacy of robotic anti-reflux surgery on symptom resolution in gerd patients: a comprehensive analysis of typical and atypical presentations.

INTRODUCTION: Robotic anti-reflux surgery (ARS) has been shown to effectively resolve typical reflux symptoms. However, its effectiveness in resolving atypical symptoms is debated. This study aims to assess short and long-term symptom resolution and to identify factors that influence outcomes after robotic ARS. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: An analysis was conducted on 720 patients who underwent robotic ARS between 2012 and 2024. The patients were divided into three groups: those with typical symptoms only (n = 342), atypical symptoms only (n = 96), and those with both types of symptoms (n = 282).

Prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms in the UK adult population and perceived effects of foods.

PURPOSE: Globally adults are not consuming enough fibre. One barrier to higher fibre intake may be the experience or expectation of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms including flatulence, bloating and abdominal pain. Identifying experiences of GI symptoms and perceptions of the role foods play could inform dietary advice to increase fibre consumption. METHODS: An online questionnaire explored GI symptoms in UK adults and their perceived association with individual foods (vegetables, fruit, fibre-rich products and other commonly consumed foods/drinks). RESULTS: Of 516 respondents (85% female, me
