Estimating enteric fever seroincidence in rural western Cambodia: Findings from a population-based cross-sectional serosurvey.

INTRODUCTION: Enteric fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi, remains an important cause of febrile illness in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). However, the exact burden is difficult to estimate due to limitations in diagnosis and surveillance. METHODS: Samples from a representative cross-sectional household serosurvey in rural western Cambodia were used to estimate enteric fever seroincidence among children and young adults. Participants were enrolled between April 7 and December 10, 2023, and 529 samples from individuals aged 5-25 years were analysed. Usin

E. coli-synthesized selenium nanoparticles suppress phoP and bapA gene expression in S. enterica isolated from human blood.

INTRODUCTION: Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella enterica, which is a chronic health problem in endemic areas due to multidrug resistance and biofilm development. The stress adaptation and virulence regulatory gene phoP and the biofilm-associated gene bapA may represent molecular targets for anti-virulence interventions. In this study, S. Typhi isolates from blood samples were characterized for their antimicrobial sensitivity and biofilm formation, and the molecular impact of biosynthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) on phoP and bapA expression was assessed. METHODOLOGY: Biochemical an

Protein-centric mechanisms of typhoidal Salmonella pathogenicity: emerging opportunities for diagnostics and anti-virulence therapeutics.

Typhoidal Salmonella (Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A) continue to impose a significant global health burden, particularly in regions characterized by inadequate sanitation and rising antimicrobial resistance. Although recent reviews have comprehensively addressed epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, vaccination strategies, and host-pathogen interactions, virulence determinants are often described in a pathway-specific manner. Consequently, a cohesive macromolecular framework integrating these determinants remains insufficiently developed. In this review, we adopt a prote

Early use of genomics to guide acquisition investigation of Salmonella Typhi.

BACKGROUND: As most Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi) cases notified to public health units in Australia are acquired overseas, a case without recent travel raises concerns of local transmission. We describe a case of S. Typhi in a hospital inpatient without recent travel, where early use of genomic sequencing suggested remote acquisition from Chile in the 1980s, with chronic asymptomatic carriage. This facilitated the stand-down of a complex acquisition investigation. CASE: A notification of S. Typhi on stool culture was received for a female aged over 90 years living in Melbourne, Australia in Oc

Prolonged fever in ESBL-producing Salmonella Typhi in Lebanon: Diagnostic challenges and the possible role of occult low-level carbapenemase activity.

Salmonella Typhi remains a global health concern, particularly in travelers returning from endemic regions. We report a 32-year-old male with persistent fever after travel to Iraq. Initial investigations were inconclusive, but cultures later identified ESBL-producing S. Typhi resistant to ceftriaxone, fluoroquinolones, and TMP-SMX, but susceptible to meropenem. Fever persisted despite meropenem and resolved only after azithromycin was added. Standard testing showed no carbapenem resistance, suggesting possible undetected low-level carbapenemase activity. This case highlights the need for heigh

Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis complicating typhoid fever: A case report from Senegal.

We report a case of secondary haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) triggered by confirmed typhoid fever (Salmonella Typhi) in a 23-year-old Senegalese man. The initial radiological presentation suggested ileo-caecal tuberculosis. Thus, persistent fever, marked hyperferritinaemia and systemic inflammation raised suspicion of HLH, confirmed by bone marrow examination demonstrating hemophagocytosis. The H-Score was 206, corresponding to 88-93% probability. Blood cultures isolated ciprofloxacin-susceptible Salmonella Typhi. Fluoroquinolone monotherapy led to complete clinical and biological r

Predictors and risk factors of typhoid fever in urban informal settlements of Nairobi, Kenya.

A clear understanding of the risk factors and key predictors of typhoid fever in endemic, low-resource settings is essential for informing effective prevention strategies and guiding empiric patient management. This study aimed to identify the predictors and risk factors linked to culture-confirmed typhoid fever in Mukuru informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya. Between November 2020 and July 2025, patients presenting with a fever of ≥ 38 °C, and/or with diarrhea were enrolled at seven health facilities in the Mukuru settlements. Structured questionnaires and case report forms were used to coll

Surgical treatment of pulmonary hydatidosis: six years of experience and results at the National Hospital Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen, Lima, Peru.

Liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome) is a lipid-associated formulation of the broad-spectrum polyene antifungal agent amphotericin B. It is active against clinically relevant yeasts and moulds, including Candida spp., Aspergillus spp. and filamentous moulds such as Zygomycetes, and is approved for the treatment of invasive fungal infections in many countries worldwide. It was developed to improve the tolerability profile of amphotericin B deoxycholate, which was for many decades considered the gold standard of antifungal treatment, despite being associated with infusion-related events and nephr

Typhoid toxin: reframing enteric fever.

SUMMARYSalmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A cause enteric (typhoid/paratyphoid) fever, a systemic disease that remains a major source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The most distinctive clinical manifestations, such as sustained fever with relative bradycardia, leukopenia, neuropsychiatric symptoms/encephalopathy, and ileal perforation, have long lacked a unifying mechanistic explanation. Over the past two decades, studies of typhoid toxin have reframed how we understand this disease. Typhoid toxin is a human-adapted, chimeric A2B5 exotoxin assembled exclusively inside inf

Waterborne Diseases in Algeria (2000-2023): Spatiotemporal Trends Analysis and Public Health Determinants.

This study examines the spatiotemporal dynamics and determinants of waterborne diseases (WBDs) in Algeria between 2000 and 2023, using annual epidemiological reports from the National Institute of Public Health. Five major diseases are analyzed: foodborne disease outbreaks (FBDOs), hepatitis A, dysentery, typhoid fever, and cholera. Descriptive statistics, temporal trend analysis, and age-stratified profiling are applied to identify epidemiological patterns and underlying determinants. Results indicate a significant epidemiological transition: Typhoid fever and dysentery declined by nearly 98%

Co-administration of oral killed whole-cell recombinant cholera toxin B-subunit vaccine (WC-rCTB) and live Salmonella Typhi Ty21a vaccine: a prospective randomized open-label trial.

BACKGROUND: Cholera and typhoid fever are often co-endemic, making vaccine co-administration practical. However, due to lack of immunogenicity data, current guidelines advise against co-administration of the oral inactivated whole-cell recombinant cholera toxin B-subunit vaccine (WC-rCTB) and the oral live Salmonella Typhi Ty21a vaccine. METHODS: Healthy adults (18-65 years) were randomized 1:1:1 to receive WC-rCTB with Ty21a (group Ch + Ty), WC-rCTB alone (group Ch) or Ty21a alone (group Ty). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated on Days 0, 5 and 7 from all, plus on Days 1

The Plague of Athens: Investigating the Enigmatic Epidemic of Ancient Greece.

The ancient Greek historian Thucydides described in his book "History of the Peloponnesian War" one of the earliest epidemics in known human history, the "Plague of Athens". The plague, which lasted from 430-426 B.C., had a death toll estimated at around 75,000 - 100,000. The importance of the plague was immense. Pericles, the historical leader of Athens, was among its victims, and his death was just the beginning of the fall of the Golden Age of Athens. The enormous death toll from the plague weakened Athens, leading to its eventual defeat in the war against Sparta. So far, the cause of this

Integration of infectious diseases in climate governance in the Horn of Africa: A document review of climate strategies, policies, and action plans across four countries.

INTRODUCTION: A range of climate-sensitive diseases are endemic to the Horn of Africa, which is increasingly vulnerable to climate extremes. Global health agencies recognise the need to abandon siloed approaches to climate change and health by integrating health in climate policies, strategies, and guidelines. This structured document review aimed to examine the extent to which health, and specifically infectious diseases, are integrated into climate governance documents in this region, with a focus on Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda. METHODS: A desk-based search strategy identified clim

Project ODIN: advancing environmental genomic surveillance for public health across sub-Saharan Africa.

Persistent SARS-CoV-2 transmission, ongoing mpox outbreaks, and the continued spread of endemic diseases such as typhoid fever and cholera underscore the urgent need for global, multiomics surveillance. In this Personal View, we present Project ODIN, a consortium of European and African partners launched in 2023 that aims to meet this challenge by deploying innovative systems for near real-time pathogen detection and actionable public health insights. The project is a collaboration between high-income and low-income countries in northern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. Focusing on low-income an

Establishment of two Hypotheses for Gut Bacterial Alteration Process for Minimizing the Intestinal Communicable Diseases.

Intestinal communicable diseases like diarrhea, dysentery, nausea, vomiting, cholera, typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, botulism, gastroenteritis, etc., are caused by different microbes. Intestinal microbial ecology is the most mysterious and complex environment for microbes. Bacteriophages are the dominant viruses in the intestinal microbiota. It is well established that gut microbial composition directly affects human health. Microbes use the gastrointestinal tract as niches there some factors or theories exist such as dietary, quorum sensing, and biosignaling, including biomass and biofilm

Protection Against Recurrent Typhoid Fever Conferred by a Prior Episode: Evidence from a Large Cohort Study in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the extent of protection against typhoid fever conferred by naturally occurring typhoid is essential for transmission modeling and vaccine policy development. However, data on the level of protection from natural typhoid against recurrent typhoid episodes are sparse. METHODS: We analyzed data from a cluster-randomized trial of a typhoid conjugate vaccine conducted in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A cohort of blood culture-confirmed typhoid patients (index cases) and matched controls (1:4 ratio) from the community who had not received the typhoid vaccine were followed for up to

Increasing evidence suggests that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) influence the pathogenesis and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The authors of the present study previously reported that abnormal upregulation of lncRNA DQ786243 (lncDQ) was associated with poor prognoses for patients with HCC. However, the elucidation of underlying mechanisms which influenced these results was not completed. Thus, the current study aimed to characterize the mechanisms and functions of lncDQ that facilitate its promotion of HCC progression. lncDQ, miR‑15b‑5p and Wnt3A expression levels were characte
