Simultaneous surgical treatment of multiple abdominal echinococcosis and benign pelvic organ tumours: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis of the liver is a parasitic infection that poses a significant healthcare challenge in endemic regions. The majority of cases present with either no clinical signs or non-specific ones, making differential diagnosis difficult until after the operation. Preoperative diagnostics rely mainly on computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound. The usual treatment for liver echinococcosis involves an operation, such as percutaneous intervention, surgical resection of the cyst as well as surrounding liver tissue, or major liver resection, followed by prolon

Frequency, Plausibility and Internal Consistency of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) Coding Related to Cystic Echinococcosis Within the Jordanian Ministry of Health Database: A Quality-Assurance Study.

Background/Objectives: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) remains endemic in many regions worldwide, including Jordan. It is one of the three zoonotic infections caused by the tapeworm of the genus Echinococcus. The epidemiology of CE in Jordan remains poorly defined, with systematic national investigations being absent for the past three decades. International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a universal coding system for disease archiving within healthcare facilities. This coding system is utilized by the Hakeem program, a health informatics system that includes all Ministry of Health (MOH) hospi

Incidence of echinococcosis in Poland 2015-2023 based on administrative health records maintained by the National Health Fund.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the larval stages of Echinococcus tapeworms. In Europe, the two species of greatest public health concern are Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) and Echinococcus multilocularis. Numerous observations of clinical cases in Poland, together with reports suggesting that official statistics underestimate infection rates, motivated an analysis of data from the National Health Fund (NHF), the national health payer in Poland. This study aimed to 1) determine the annual number of echinococcosis cases and their subtypes, 2)

An Unusual Case of Anterior Mediastinal Cystic Echinococcosis Successfully Resolved with Multidisciplinary Approach.

Human echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease caused by accidental ingestion of tapeworm eggs of the genus Echinococcus, shed in the feces of animal definitive host. In the human duodenum, these eggs release oncospheres, which penetrate the intestinal wall and via the bloodstream reach the liver-the most common site for development of cysts. However, it is important to remember that any other organ can be affected via the bloodstream, due to larvae size. In Europe, the most diagnostically relevant species are Echinococcus granulosus, with a median incidence of 0.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a

Primary ovarian hydatid cyst mimicking cyst adenoma: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cysts (HC) are zoonotic diseases that are mainly caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Ovarian HC is a rare condition with different and unspecified presentations. Here we report a rare case of primary ovarian HC. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old woman with chronic abdominal pain and left hemipelvic fullness was referred to the Obstetrics Clinic of the Kowsar Hospital of Qazvin. Abdominopelvic sonography revealed a cystic mass, which primarily suggested a cyst adenoma. The tumor marker levels were within normal limits. After surgical resection, histopathological examination s

Unusual retention behavior of omeprazole and its chiral impurities B and E on the amylose tris (3-chloro-5-methylphenylcarbamate) chiral stationary phase in polar organic mode.

Recent reports have demonstrated that the new commercially available immobilized-type chiral stationary phases (CSPs) containing amylose tris(3-chloro-5-methylphenylcarbamate) (ACMPC) as a selector exhibit not only an exceptionally high enantioselectivity in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) but they are also applicable to a wide range of chiral analytes. Herein, we report the results obtained in the HPLC analysis of omeprazole and its impurities B and E on the ACMPC-based Chiralpak IG-3 CSP (CSP) under polar organic conditions. A systematic evaluation of the retention characterist

The use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for the diagnostic evaluation of hepatic echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic echinococcosis (HE) is a zoonosis and depicts a rare but potentially lethal disease caused by larval infestation of E. multilocularis (alveolar echinococcosis, AE) and E. granulosus (cystic echinocococcosis, CE). In many countries, HE is a critical public health problem. Clinically, HE patients initially are often asymptomatic for years. Depending on the echinococcal manifestations patients can later develop unspecific symptoms as fatigue, abdominal pain and may present with elevated transaminases, jaundice and hepatomegaly. The combination of grey scale ultrasound and sero

Echinococcus species in African wildlife.

Cystic echinococcosis, caused by different species of the Echinococcus granulosus complex, is an important zoonotic disease with a particular impact on pastoralist societies. In addition to the widespread taxa with synanthropic transmission, a number of Echinococcus species were described from African wild carnivores early in the 20th century. For lack of study material, most of these were later tentatively synonymized with E. granulosus. Early infection experiments with wildlife isolates gave ambiguous results due to the use of unspecified parasite material, and only recently molecular method

[Percutaneous puncture in hepatic echinococcosis].

This is a report on a case of severe anaphylactic shock and hemorrhage following liver puncture with diagnostic purpose. Based on literature data and personal experience, percutaneous puncture of a parasitic expanding cyst, done with diagnostic and therapeutic purpose, is discarded, assuming the method as an error of art. Its performing using updated imaging techniques--echography and computerized tomography--by no means reduce the risk of anaphylactic shock and secondary echinococcosis. In the event of being accidentally done, emergency operation followed by chemotherapy to preclude secondary
