Halitosis and Helicobacter pylori Infection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Halitosis, a common clinical condition, is frequently associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. Numerous studies have highlighted a significant reduction in halitosis following successful H. pylori eradication. AIM: This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between H. pylori infection and halitosis, as well as the effect of H. pylori eradication on halitosis resolution. METHODS: We searched major databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and the Science Citation Index, up to March 2025. Literature screening and data extraction were conducted ac

Application of IgA-Seq in schizophrenia to identify key gut bacteria that promote abnormal behavior in mice.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) has a complex etiology, and growing evidence implicates the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Because abundance-based profiling does not identify taxa closely engaged by mucosal immunity, we used immunoglobulin A (IgA)-based bacterial sorting to prioritize candidate SCZ-associated gut bacteria and evaluated cultured consortia in mouse models. Fecal samples were collected from participants with SCZ, other mental disorders, and healthy controls, which underwent 16S rRNA gene sequencing before and after magnetic separation of IgA-coated (IgA+) and non-IgA-coated (IgA-) bacteria. Taxa

Outcomes of Screening Colonoscopy in Older Adults: A Large Propensity-Matched Real-World Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The benefits and harms of screening colonoscopy after age 75 remain uncertain. Guidelines endorse individualized decisions given competing risks, but comparative data are limited. METHODS: In the TriNetX US Collaborative Network, adults aged 75-90 years with a colorectal cancer screening encounter were matched 1:1 by colonoscopy within 3 months. Outcomes were assessed at 30 days, 1 year, and 5 years. Sensitivity analyses excluded pre-index anemia and, separately, fecal abnormalities and alarm symptoms; subsequent colonoscopy was counted through 5 years. RESULTS: Matched cohorts c

Evaluation of Intervention Strategies to Improve Follow-Up Colonoscopy After Abnormal FIT/FOBT Result: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Early detection through screenings has been shown to improve morbidity and mortality. While fecal immunochemical test (FIT) or fecal occult blood test (FOBT) are established cost-effective screening modalities for colorectal cancer, follow-up colonoscopy screening rates remain suboptimal. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate interventions targeting colonoscopy completion and the prevalence of colonoscopy completion after an abnormal FIT/FOBT result. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched f

Association between perceived stress and self-reported halitosis among university students: the mediating role of xerostomia, a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Halitosis is a common oral health concern with notable psychosocial consequences. Although psychological stress has been linked to various oral conditions, the specific mechanism through which perceived stress contributes to self-reported halitosis remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of self-reported halitosis among university students and to evaluate the associations between perceived stress levels, oral hygiene behaviors, xerostomia, and self-reported halitosis, with a particular focus on the potential mediating role of xerostomia. METHODS: A cross-sect

Solitary Rectal Ulcer Syndrome Mimicking Ulcerative Colitis: A Case Report.

Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) is a benign rectal disorder associated with abnormal defecation and mucosal prolapse. Its clinical and endoscopic features may mimic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We report the case of a 28-year-old woman with longstanding obstructed defecation who presented with recurrent bloody mucus discharge and severe iron-deficiency anemia (hemoglobin 6.6 g/dL), which was treated with intravenous iron infusions. C-reactive protein was normal, whereas fecal calprotectin was markedly elevated. Initial colonoscopy showed erythematous and congested mucosa extending f

Integrated Multi-Omics, Machine Learning, and Single-Cell Analysis Provide Insights into Potential Multi-Target Candidate Mechanisms of Combined MAGL11 and Icaritin in Alleviating Imidazole Propionate-Driven Metabolic Intestinal Injury.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy diets, especially high red meat intake, induce gut dysbiosis and abnormal accumulation of a harmful histidine metabolite imidazole propionate (IMP), thereby promoting ulcerative colitis (UC) development. Although combined treatment with a MAGL inhibitor (MAGL11) and icaritin (Y003) exerts combined therapeutic effects in the classical DSS‑induced UC model, its protective effects and molecular mechanisms against IMP‑driven metabolic model remain unclear. PURPOSE: The present study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of MAGL11 and Y003 on IMP‑driven metabolic in

Microbial therapeutics for canine periodontal disease: current status and future perspectives.

Periodontal disease in dogs arises from ecological disruption of the oral microbiome. Sequencing-based studies and quantitative molecular analyses reveal characteristic dysbiotic transitions in affected dogs, with coordinated increases in Porphyromonas gulae, Prevotella, and Treponema, along with Treponema denticola and Tannerella forsythia, together with a loss of commensal-dominated genera such as Moraxella, Capnocytophaga, and members of the Neisseriaceae family. Rather than being driven by a single dominant pathogen, accumulating evidence indicates that canine periodontitis is driven by po

Psychosocial burden of halitosis: association between volatile sulfur compounds and quality of life in adults.

Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, is a highly prevalent condition often associated with volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by oral anaerobic bacteria. While intraoral halitosis is the most frequent type, its psychosocial impact remains underexplored in terms of its correlation with objective diagnostic markers. This study investigated the association between VSC concentrations and halitosis-related quality of life using the Halitosis Associated Life-Quality Test (HALT). In this cross-sectional study, 40 adults self-reporting halitosis were assessed using OralChroma™, a portable g
