Isolated ascending colon perforation from blunt trauma in an eleven-year-old adolescent: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Colonic perforation from blunt abdominal trauma is rare in children and often presents a diagnostic challenge due to delayed or atypical symptoms. Handlebar injuries are a known cause of localized trauma, typically affecting the small bowel or pancreas; isolated colonic perforation is exceedingly rare. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old boy presented with right lower quadrant pain and anorexia two days after a bicycle fall where his abdomen struck the handlebar. He was initially assessed and discharged from another clinic. Upon representation, physical examination revealed a handleb

A giant 4 kg fecaloma leading to intestinal obstruction in an adult survivor of anorectal malformation: a case report.

Intestinal obstruction due to a giant fecaloma is a rare clinical condition, characterized by a markedly hardened fecal mass that is more severe than a simple fecal impaction. We report a case of a 24-year-old female with a history of repaired anorectal malformation (ARM) during infancy who presented with the complaint of abdominal rigidity, progressive abdominal distention, and chronic constipation. The contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen showed a grossly dilated rectosigmoid region. During laparotomy, a giant fecaloma (4 kg) was found obstructing the descending colon. The di

Acute rupture of a huge liver hydatid cysts in the peritoneal cavity causing an anaphylactic shock: A case report.

The rupture of hepatic hydatid cysts into the peritoneal cavity is an uncommon but life-threatening condition that can result in complications such as peritonitis and anaphylactic shock. This report describes the case of a 39-year-old diabetic male who presented with acute epigastric pain, fever (39°C), and abdominal rigidity. Imaging studies revealed pneumoperitoneum and the rupture of a large hepatic hydatid cyst measuring 20 × 30 cm located in the right lobe of the liver. Emergency laparotomy confirmed the rupture, and surgical management involved peritoneal lavage and initiation of antipar

Abdominal Rigidity and Lower Extremity Weakness due to a Latrodectus Bite in Greece: A Case Report.

Latrodectus, or "black widow" spiders, are found worldwide. Black widow envenomations are rare occurrences in Greece. Black widow bites cause unremarkable local lesions that may also include systemic signs and symptoms. Our purpose is to present a rare case of a black widow spider bite.  Herein, we report the case of a 66-year-old farmer who presented to our hospital due to abdominal pain and was admitted after he was bitten by a black widow spider. Our patient showed the typical symptoms of latrodectism, that is, rubor and pain at the bite spot, washboard abdomen, rhabdomyolysis, and lower-ex

A Case Study of a Rare Disease (Fructosemia) Diagnosed in a Patient with Abdominal Pain.

Hereditary fructose intolerance is a rare genetic disorder that is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, with mutations sometimes occurring spontaneously. Consuming fructose triggers biochemical abnormalities, disrupting liver processes like glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. Recent studies have revealed elevated intrahepatic fat levels in affected individuals. Symptoms include aversion to fructose-containing foods, hypoglycemia, liver and kidney dysfunction, and growth delays, with severe cases leading to liver enlargement, fatty liver disease, kidney failure, and life-threatening hypo

Ileal perforation peritonitis secondary to ingestion of magnetic beads in the older child: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Foreign body ingestion is frequent in younger children, with generally good outcome on conservative management. However, magnetic beads ingestion is an exceptional cause of intestinal perforation in the older children. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old boy presented with clinical signs of generalized acute peritonitis. Abdominal plain X-ray confirmed the foreign object in the digestive tract and oriented the etiology by highlighting several air-fluid levels, distended small bowel loops, pneumoperitoneum and the presence of a bilobed foreign body projected adjacent

Identification of Iatrogenic Perforation in Pediatric Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

OBJECTIVES: Iatrogenic viscus perforation in pediatric gastrointestinal endoscopy (GIE) is a very rare, yet potentially life-threatening event. There are no evidence-based recommendations relating to immediate post-procedure follow-up to identify perforations and allow for timely management. This study aims to characterize the presentation of children with post-GIE perforation to better rationalize post-procedure recommendations. METHODS: Retrospective study based on unrestricted pooled data from centers throughout Europe, North America, and the Middle East affiliated with the Endoscopy Speci

Spontaneous rupture of a splenic artery aneurysm causing acute abdomen in a 19-year-old male patient: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: A splenic artery aneurysm is considered an abnormal dilatation of the splenic artery layers greater than 1 cm in diameter. First described by Beaussier in 1770, it affects 1% of the population but carries a major risk for life-threatening complications of rupture in 3%-10% of cases regardless of its congenital or acquired etiology. The presentation is highly variable, from asymptomatic incidental discovery during routine imaging to aneurysmal rupture causing acute abdomen, massive gastrointestinal bleeding, and hemorrhagic shock. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present a 19-year-o

Revelation of Rapunzel syndrome: A rare case report of gastric trichobezoar-induced acute purulent peritonitis.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The Rapunzel syndrome embodies an uncommon variation of trichobezoar, predominantly observed among individuals with a history of psychiatric conditions, trichotillomania, and trichophagia. This combination of factors predisposes to the eventual formation of gastric bezoars. Trichobezoars, infrequent gastric masses composed of hair, can lead to complications if left untreated. CASE REPORT: A 19-year-old female hairdresser with a history of trichophagia sought medical attention due to abdominal pain and episodes of vomiting. With an elevated body temperature and abd

Rapidly developed heterotopic ossification: a rare complication after trauma.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a condition where aberrant bone grows in tissues. This case study presents a rare complication of trauma and laparotomies, where the rapid and extensive occurrence of HO has delayed abdominal incision closure resulting in multiple surgeries and prolonged recovery. A 44-year-old man was retrieved after a truck accident resulting in multi-organ injuries. He required damage control trauma laparotomy followed by several relooks and multiple orthopaedic procedures. Despite several attempts, approximation of the laparostomy wound was not possible due to abdominal rig

Fentanyl-Induced Rigid Chest Syndrome in Critically Ill Patients.

BACKGROUND: Opioid induced chest wall rigidity was first described in the early 1950s during surgical anesthesia and has often been referred to as fentanyl induced rigid chest syndrome (FIRCS). It has most commonly been described in the setting of procedural sedation and bronchoscopy, characterized by pronounced abdominal and thoracic rigidity, asynchronous ventilation, and respiratory failure. FIRCS has been infrequently described in the setting of continuous analgesia in critically ill adult patients. We postulate that FIRCS can occur in this setting and is likely under recognized, leading t

Brachial monomelic amyotrophy as an initial manifestation of stiff person syndrome.

Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is characterized by rigidity of truncal and proximal muscles. The presence of abdominal and paraspinal rigidity is a defining clinical feature of SPS. It is rarely associated with the lower motor neuron (LMN) features. We report a patient with SPS whose initial clinical presentation was that of brachial monomelic amyotrophy (BMA). A 24-year-old gentleman presented with a history of the left upper limb wasting and weakness. In addition, he reported stiffness of the lower limbs and abdomen while walking. On examination, patient had left upper limb monomelic amyotrophy

An unusual manifestation of Hand-Foot-Genital Syndrome: Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma - A case report.

Hand-Foot-Genital Syndrome (HFGS) is a dominantly inherited condition and one of the rarest cases encountered in clinical practice. It might be presented with a wide variety of limb malformations and urogenital defects manifestations. In this report, a unique and novel case of HFGS accompanied with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder is described in a two-year-old male. The patient was admitted to the hospital in order to investigate a progressively enlarging mass in the lower abdomen. During hospitalization, oliguria was noted by resident physicians. However, hypospadias and dys
