Early-life enrichment in American mink (Neogale vison): Enrichment of the perinatal environment improves maternal nest building and reduces stereotypic behaviour.

Pens for farmed mink (Neogale vison) commonly include separate nesting areas to provide privacy and warmth in the perinatal period. However, standard bedding materials may not be sufficient to allow intrinsically motivated nest-building behaviours in dams. Further, these materials may not produce optimal nest structures for the rearing of kits. In the present study, we provided extra, relatively high-quality nest-building materials and a chewable sisal rope enrichment for mink dams in the perinatal period (a group enriched at whelping; EW). The effects of these enrichments on various measures

Impact of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the intestinal microbiota of dogs with antibiotic-induced dysbiosis.

INTRODUCTION: The gut microbiota plays an important role in the health of dogs, but treatment with antibiotics causes marked dysbiosis. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of yeast probiotic Saccharomyces cerevisiae supplementation on the fecal microbiota of dogs and its potential to prevent dysbiosis induced by antibiotics. METHODS: Twenty healthy adult dogs were divided into a control and a yeast probiotic group receiving 1g/kg of S. cerevisiae (Actisaf®, Phileo by Lesaffre, Marcq-en-Barœul, France) daily from D0 to D31. Both groups were given oral metronidazole from D1

Eosinophilia and IgE Elevation: An Uncommon Toxocara Infection.

Eosinophilia and elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels are common indicators of parasitic infections, allergic reactions, or autoimmune conditions. In this clinical report, we present the case of a 56-year-old woman who was observed in a follow-up consultation, whose laboratory investigations revealed significant eosinophilia (5.52 × 10E3/uL) and elevated serum IgE levels (19253.00 IKU/L). The patient had no symptoms and the physical examination was unremarkable. An abdominal ultrasound was performed showing no abnormalities. Further diagnostic workup, including serological tests and imaging,

Gut microbes: Therapeutic Target for neuropsychiatric disorders.

Neuropsychiatric diseases encompass a range of mental and neurological disorders that have a significant and far-reaching effect on an individual's quality of life. These conditions affect not only the mental status but also the physical well-being of individuals, which leads to weakened immune systems and other diseases. Emerging research underscores a significant connection between the gut microbiome and neuropsychiatric diseases, suggesting that microbial communities within the gastrointestinal tract may influence brain function and mental health. Gut dysbiosis is caused by various factors,

Anti-arthritic effects of polyunsaturated fatty acid-rich supplementation combined with selective soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibitors in a collagen-induced arthritis mouse model.

OBJECTIVES: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are healthy fats that contain a double carbon bond. They are made up of omega (ω)-3 and ω-6 PUFAs, where ω-3 PUFAs exhibit beneficial effects, such as the suppression of cardiovascular events and the improvement of abnormal lipid metabolism. However, their effects on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are unclear. Epoxy fatty acids, which are intermediate metabolites of ω-6 and ω-3 PUFAs, are formed through the action of cytochrome P and possess anti-inflammatory properties. However, they are quickly converted into their inactive forms by soluble epoxide

Intervention and research progress of gut microbiota-immune-nervous system in autism spectrum disorders among students.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors, restricted interests, and sensory abnormalities. Its etiology is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, with no definitive cause identified and no specific pharmacological treatments available, posing a significant burden on patients' families and society. In recent years, research has discovered that gut microbiota dysbiosis plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of ASD. The gut microbiota can influence br

A Video Decision Aid Decreases Fear of Colonoscopy After an Abnormal Fecal Immunochemical Test Result: A Pilot Study.

Colonoscopy completion after abnormal fecal immunochemical test (FIT) results is inadequate, and patient fear is a commonly reported barrier. We developed and piloted a video decision aid that addresses fear of colonoscopy among patients with abnormal FIT results. We developed a video decision aid and, in a pilot study, randomized patients in a safety-net healthcare system with abnormal FIT results and no follow-up colonoscopy to the intervention or usual care. Both groups completed a baseline survey that measured fear of colonoscopy, knowledge about colorectal cancer (CRC), self-efficacy, and

Restricted vs. ad libitum feeding during sow gestation affects piglet performance, behavior, and fecal microbiota composition.

This study investigated how the nutrition of gestating sows affects piglet performance, behavior, and fecal microbiota. Twenty-four sows were divided into 2 feeding groups: those on a restricted diet (once a day) and those fed ad libitum (as much as they wanted), with all receiving the same diet during lactation. The piglets were categorized based on their feeding groups; RG-RL: Piglets born and nursed by restricted-fed sows with restricted feeding, AG-AL: Piglets born and nursed by ad lib-fed sows, RG-AL: Piglets born by restricted-fed sows and nursed by ad lib-fed sows, and AG-RL: Piglets bo

Nondigestible stachyose alleviates cyclophosphamide-induced small intestinal mucosal injury in mice by regulating intestinal exosomal miRNAs, independently of the gut microbiota.

Stachyose has traditionally been considered to exert prebiotic effects primarily through its interaction with gut microbiota. However, this study reveals a novel mechanism by which stachyose alleviates cyclophosphamide (CY)-induced small intestinal mucosa disruption by regulating the intestinal exosomal miRNAs, without relying on the gut microbiota. Specifically, stachyose significantly mitigates CY-caused damage to the intestinal permeability, oxidative stress, and the structure of intestinal villi and crypts in pseudo-germ-free (PGF) mice. The immunofluorescence staining and qPCR analyses sh

Prenatal Exposure to Lipopolysaccharide or Valproate Leads to Abnormal Accumulation of the NMDA Receptor Agonist D-Aspartate in the Adolescent Rat Brain.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental psychiatric condition linked to glutamatergic neurotransmission disruption. Although endogenous D-serine and D-aspartate modulate glutamatergic N-methyl D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) activity, their involvement in ASD remains elusive. We measured the levels of D-aspartate, D-serine, and other key neuroactive amino acids, and their direct precursors in brain regions, plasma, and feces of environmental ASD rat models prenatally exposed to lipopolysaccharide or valproate, both during adolescence and early adulthood, as well as in a genetic ASD

Implications of gut microbiota-mediated epigenetic modifications in intestinal diseases.

Intestinal diseases are highly prevalent, affecting millions worldwide and significantly contributing to global morbidity. The treatment of complex disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC), remains challenging due to multifactorial etiologies, diverse patient responses, and the limitations of current therapeutic strategies. Although the gut microbiota clearly plays a role in regulating the onset of intestinal diseases, few studies have explored the epigenetic factors by which the microbiota contributes to disease development. Here, the latest insights int

[Pathogenesis and progress in diagnosis and treatment of diversion colitis after colorectal cancer surgery].

Diversion colitis (DC) is a non-specific inflammation caused by the lack of fecal flow stimulation in the distal intestine after intestinal diversion surgery. It is mainly related to factors such as intestinal flora imbalance, deficiency of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) and immune abnormalities. The clinical manifestations of diversion colitis include abdominal pain, mucus and bloody stools, diarrhea and other symptoms, but most patients may have no obvious symptoms. Diagnosis mainly relies on endoscopic examination and pathological characteristics. Common endoscopic findings include mucosal c

Comprehensive analysis of Eimeria necatrix infection: From intestinal lesions to gut microbiota and metabolic disturbances.

The coccidian Eimeria necatrix infects the mid-intestine of chickens, causing hemorrhage and resulting in significant economic losses. However, there is a lack of a clear method for evaluating the tissue lesions caused by E. necatrix infection. Moreover, the impact of E. necatrix infection on gut microbiota and metabolites remains to be explored. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of E. necatrix infection on the intestinal tissues of chickens and establish a novel histopathological scoring system for evaluating lesion severity. In addition, changes in gut microbiota

Iron Chelation Therapy.

Iron overload is a serious complication associated with transfusion-dependent anemias and anemias characterized by ineffective erythropoiesis. Iron accumulation is toxic to many tissues, causing heart failure, cirrhosis, liver cancer, growth retardation, and multiple endocrine abnormalities.Chelation therapy aims to balance the rate of iron accumulation from blood transfusions by increasing iron excretion in urine and/or feces with chelators. Three iron chelators are currently available to treat patients: one administered parenterally called deferoxamine (or desferrioxamine) and two oral chela

Sources of Environmental Exposure to the Naturally Occurring Anabolic Steroid Ecdysterone in Horses.

Ecdysterone controls moulting and reproduction in insects, crustaceans, and helminths. It is also produced by many plants, probably as an insect deterrent. The steroid is not made by vertebrates but has anabolic effects in mammals and could be useful for treating sarcopenia in aged horses. However, ecdysterone is banned in horseracing and equestrian sports, and with no limit of reporting, the risk of unintended exposure to this naturally occurring prohibited substance is a concern. To explore this risk, pasture plants and hay samples were analysed for ecdysterone content, as well as samples of
