Renal abscessation in dromedary camels: Clinical, ultrasonographic, hematobiochemical, and etiological investigations.

BACKGROUND: Although renal abscessation is rarely reported in dromedary camels, it is increasingly detected in this species. AIM: This study aimed to investigate renal abscessation in camels with special emphasis on ultrasonographic findings and causative agents. METHODS: Seventeen diseased camels (Camelus dromedarius) were examined. In addition, 10 healthy camels were used as the control group. A jugular puncture was performed to collect blood in EDTA tubes and serum samples. The thorax and abdomen were examined via transcutaneous and transrectal ultrasound. A free-hand ultrasound-guided as

Interaction of environmental fluoride exposure and gut microbes: Potential implication in the development of fluorosis in human subjects.

Fluoride exposure primarily occurs through contaminated water and leads to fluorosis, which is a global health concern. After ingestion, fluoride is absorbed via gastrointestinal tract, where it interacts with the gut microbiota. While animal studies have explored fluoride's effects on gut microbiota, no human studies have yet been conducted. Most research emphasizes metagenomic diversity, neglecting isolation and characterization of pure cultures for further applications. Additionally, the association between gut microbiota with fluorosis outcomes in fluoride-exposed populations is unexplored

Interplay of constipation, intestinal barrier dysfunction and fungal exposome in aetiopathogenesis of Parkinson's disease: hypothesis with supportive data.

Constipation is a forerunner to Parkinson's disease (PD) diagnosis, worsening thereafter. We explore the relationship of intestinal barrier dysfunction to constipation and whether intestinal fungal load is an aggravating factor. Fungal load was quantified by real-time PCR, using ITS1F-ITS2 primer set, on microbial DNA extract from stool in 68 participants with PD, 102 without. Fungal load was 60% higher per decade after age 60 years, with no PD status interaction with age. After age adjustment, it was associated inversely with dietary renal acid load. It was unrelated to the presence of consti

Chronic Constipation With a Rare Complication of Ischemic Stercoral Perforation of the Rectum: A Case Report.

Stercoral perforation is a rare but life-threatening complication of chronic constipation, resulting from pressure necrosis of the colonic wall by impacted fecal material. We report the case of a previously healthy 48-year-old woman who presented with acute anal pain and constipation. Despite initial conservative management, her symptoms rapidly worsened. Cross-sectional imaging revealed a large fecaloma in the sigmoid colon with signs of colonic ischemia and perforation. Emergency laparotomy confirmed a substantial anterior rectal wall perforation, and a Hartmann's procedure was performed. Hi

Dietary manipulation of intestinal microbes prolongs survival in a mouse model of Hirschsprung disease.

UNLABELLED: Enterocolitis is a common and potentially deadly manifestation of Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) but disease mechanisms remain poorly defined. Unexpectedly, we discovered that diet can dramatically affect the lifespan of a HSCR mouse model ( Piebald lethal , sl/sl ) where affected animals die from HAEC complications. In the sl/sl model, diet alters gut microbes and metabolites, leading to changes in colon epithelial gene expression and epithelial oxygen levels known to influence colitis severity. Our findings demonstrate unrecognized similarity between HAEC and other types of colitis

A review of inflammatory bowel diseases in humans and pets: treatment strategies.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses a group of chronic inflammatory conditions that primarily impact the gastrointestinal system. While ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are the principal manifestations in humans, animals frequently exhibit lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis/colitis and eosinophilic enteritis/colitis. Growing evidence suggests a complex interplay among genetic predisposition, gut microbiota imbalance and abnormal immune responses to intestinal microbes in susceptible individuals. This intricate involvement results in remarkably similar clinical presentations acros

Lithophagia in a 4-Year-Old Child.

Lithophagia is a form of pica syndrome, characterized by the ingestion of stones. It is an eating behavior disorder primarily observed in children and often associated with neurodevelopmental disorders or nutritional deficiencies. This condition may lead to severe complications such as intestinal obstruction, gastrointestinal perforation, or even acute bowel obstruction requiring prompt and appropriate medical management. We report the case of a 4-year-old girl who was initially hospitalized for hydrocarbon poisoning. Upon admission, the patient presented with a fever of 39°C, acute respirator

Evaluating Access and Efficacy of Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy in Pediatric Hirschsprung Disease.

In patients with Hirschsprung disease (HD), pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT) is recommended for persistent incontinence or constipation refractory to other treatment, but there are no studies on utilization of PFPT. We aimed to assess clinical and sociodemographic factors associated with successful establishment of PFPT and outcomes following PFPT.We performed a single-institution, retrospective chart review of patients with HD referred to PFPT between 2020 and 2023, involving both exercise and biofeedback. Data were collected on clinical factors, sociodemographics, and symptoms before and

Meconium-Related Obstruction and Clinical Outcomes in Term and Preterm Infants.

IMPORTANCE: Textbooks attribute 80% of meconium-related small bowel obstructions to cystic fibrosis and 15% of colonic obstructions to Hirschsprung disease. It is unknown whether these estimates are accurate, particularly among preterm infants, whose immature bowel predisposes them to meconium-related obstruction (MRO). OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of MRO by type and to assess its association with clinical outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study of live-born infants included in the National Inpatient Sample from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 20

Artemisia argyi folium as a traditional and safe dietary additive ameliorates metabolic syndrome via gut microbiota and its metabolites.

Artemisia argyi, a globally recognized plant widely used in medicine and food, has become an important and popular food additive in Asia and other parts of the world. However, its edible safety has always been controversial. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the safety and health benefits of A. argyi as a dietary additive. Fresh and dried A. argyi water extracts (FAA and DAA, respectively) were prepared by simulating two processing methods for edible tender A. argyi. And chemical composition analysis showed that both FAA and DAA were rich in nutritional and functional components, including polysacc

Lower Childhood Opportunity Index is Associated With Delayed Diagnosis of Anorectal Malformations.

PURPOSE: Delay in diagnosis of anorectal malformations (ARM) can potentially lead to adverse events. Perineal and rectovestibular fistulas are more likely to be missed on exam compared to other ARM subtypes. We aimed to identify which clinical factors and social determinants of health (SDOH) elements may be associated with missed diagnosis of these ARMs. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of all infants with perineal or rectovestibular fistulas seen at a single center from 2014 to 2023. Delayed diagnosis was defined as those made beyond the second day of life. Data were collected r

Lupus enteritis and peritonitis as a first presentation of systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: SLE is a chronic autoimmune illness that affects several systems. Gastrointestinal abnormalities, although uncommon, can be dangerous and frequently go undiagnosed due to vague symptoms. Lupus enteritis and peritonitis are serious consequences. Lupus enteritis affects up to 9.7% of SLE patients and causes stomach discomfort, nausea, and diarrhea. It frequently involves intestinal vasculitis, which results in gut wall thickening and, in extreme instances, ischemia or perforation. Lupus peritonitis is very uncommon. Differentiating them from other causes of stomach discomfort is crit

Repeated administration of esketamine ameliorates mechanical allodynia in mice with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: A role of gut microbiota and metabolites.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) severely diminishes the quality of life for cancer survivors, yet effective treatments remain scarce. Esketamine, a commonly used anesthetic, has demonstrated neuroprotective effects by restoring gut microbiome dysbiosis. In this study, we investigated the impact of esketamine on nociceptive sensitivity in a mouse model of CIPN and explored the potential involvement of the gut microbiome. In mice treated with oxaliplatin, repeated esketamine doses (in contrast to a single dose) significantly improved the paw withdrawal threshold (PWT). Western

Tight Junction Defects in Aganglionic and Ganglionic Colon in Children With Hirschsprung Disease.

Intestinal epithelial barrier loss has been suggested as a pathogenic factor in Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis and intestinal dysfunction in children with Hirschsprung disease (HD), but there is a paucity of comprehensive studies on the tight junction proteins that regulate paracellular permeability in this population. This case-control study aimed to determine if colonic epithelial tight junction protein expression is altered in children with HD. We use quantitative immunofluorescence microscopy to assess the expression of tight junction proteins (claudin-1, claudin-2, claudin-3, claud

Unveiling the rumen-microbiome-brain circuit: a unique dimension of gut-brain axis in ruminants.

Gut-brain communication via the peripheral neural network is vital for regulating local digestive function and systemic physiology. Gut microbiota, which produces a wide array of neuroactive compounds, is a critical modulator in this bidirectional dialog. Perturbations in the gut microbiota have been implicated in neurological disorders such as depression and stress. Distinct from humans and other monogastric animals, ruminants possess a unique, microbially dense gastrointestinal compartment, the rumen, that facilitates the digestion of fibrous plant materials. These ruminal microbes are likel

Dolichocolon is common in pediatric gastroenterology patients with constipation and associated complaints.

OBJECTIVES: Dolichocolon (DC), classified under International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) code Q43.8 ("Other specified congenital malformations of intestine"), refers to an elongated or redundant large intestine. Recent studies in adults indicate a role for dolichocolon in constipation and disorders of gut-brain interaction. Contrast enema (CE) imaging is commonly used to identify DC, typically defined as a sigmoid colon extending above, or a transverse colon descending below, the iliac crest line. Despite its potential relevance, the prevalence and clinical significanc

Integrating Gut Microbiome and Metabolomics with Magnetic Resonance Enterography to Advance Bowel Damage Prediction in Crohn's Disease.

PURPOSE: Cumulative bowel damage (BD) critically influences the progression and prognosis of Crohn's disease (CD). Although the Lémann Index (LI) remains the standard for BD assessment, its clinical utility is limited by heavy reliance on extensive clinical data. Multiparametric magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) provides noninvasive macroscopic evaluation of BD severity, however, it fails to characterize microscopic alterations. We therefore integrated MRE with gut microbiome and metabolomic data to uncover mechanistic insights and develop a comprehensive model for better prediction of BD.

Paeoniflorin improves atherosclerosis by regulating the gut microbiota and fecal metabolites.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease and a key factor in cardiovascular disease. Paeoniflorin (PF), a monomer component extracted from red and white paeony roots, has been used for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, but the specific mechanism remains unclear. ApoE-/- mice fed a high-fat diet were randomly divided into a model group, a PF treatment group, a positive control group, and a control group fed a non-high-fat diet. The mice in the PF group were treated with 100 mg/kg (PF-100), 50 mg/kg (PF-50), and 25 mg/kg (PF-25) of PF through gavage. The posi
