[The relationship between the state of the microbiota and oral hygiene, their impact on human health (literature review)].

The oral microbiota plays an important role in maintaining dental and systemic health. The interaction between the oral and gut microbiota highlights the bidirectional connection between oral health and systemic health, where disturbances in one micro-ecosystem can spill over into the other. An imbalance leading to oral dysbiosis can accelerate a range of oral diseases, such as caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, halitosis, and oral candidiasis and also have profound impacts on overall health, including gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular and neurological diseases, and endocrine imbalanc

Large epiphrenic oesophageal diverticulum with hiatus hernia: Excellent outcome with laparoscopic transhiatal approach.

Epiphrenic oesophageal diverticulum (ED) is a rare condition often associated with oesophageal motility disorders, most notably achalasia cardia. Symptoms include dysphagia, regurgitation, chest pain, halitosis and respiratory symptoms. Surgical management includes diverticulectomy, Heller's cardiomyotomy and partial fundoplication. While thoracic approaches were traditionally used, the laparoscopic transhiatal approach offers distinct advantages. We report the case of a 69-year-old female presenting with dysphagia, foul-smelling regurgitation and chest pain. Her Eckardt score was seven. Inves

Oral interferon alpha treatment significantly reduces halitosis and Porphyromonas gulae growth in dogs with periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease (PD) is one of the most common infectious conditions in dogs, associated with plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation, halitosis, and tooth loss. Halitosis is primarily caused by volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) generated by anaerobic bacteria, including Porphyromonas gulae (P. gulae), a pathogen closely linked to PD progression. This study examined the effects of oral interferon alpha (IFN-α) on halitosis and bacterial activity in dogs with PD. Thirty-two dogs with moderate-to-severe PD were enrolled and allocated to untreated controls (n = 10) or IFN-α treatment (n = 2

The Control of Canine Halitosis By Sugar Cane Polyphenols: Effects and Potential Mechanisms.

Halitosis in companion animals lacks safe, effective long-term solutions. This study evaluated sugar cane polyphenols (SP) as an oral deodorizer for dogs using acute and 30 day intervention trials. Efficacy was evaluated by sensory scoring, volatile profiling, microbiome analysis, and mechanistic assays. Oral malodor was significantly reduced in both the acute (0-120 min) spray test and the 30 day SP intervention, accompanied by decreases in volatile sulfur compounds and indole. Mechanistic evidence indicated that SP interacts with odorants through noncovalent interactions and reduces protein

Canine Halitosis Improved With a Postbiotic: A Validation Study.

Halitosis, or oral malodor, is caused by unwanted oral microbes that metabolize proteins and produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). These malodorous VSCs may negatively impact oral health as they are pro-inflammatory, and halitosis is generally considered an important marker of oral health status. A previous clinical study with 24 dogs showed that daily administration of 250 mg of a novel canine oral health postbiotic (COHP) significantly decreased VSCs by 26% compared to placebo on Day 14, with twice as many dogs showing perceptibly improved breath in the COHP group on Day 7. The present d

Impact of oral probiotics on oral health and halitosis in orthodontic patients treated with aligners or conventional fixed appliances vs placebo: two randomized clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Halitosis is primarily caused by oral microbiota dysbiosis, exacerbated by orthodontic appliances that promote plaque retention. Probiotics offer a potential non-invasive strategy to rebalance oral flora and reduce volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), but their clinical effectiveness remains largely underexplored in Orthodontics. OBJECTIVES: The aim of these trials was to determine the effect of oral probiotics containing Lactobacillus salivarius Oral S1 on plaque and gingival indices as well as on halitosis (via VSC) in patients treated with orthodontic brackets or aligners vs place
