Effect of variation in temperature on malodor generation from different units of a wastewater treatment plant.

This study investigates the effect of temperature variation on malodor generation across different units of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The results demonstrate that higher temperatures exacerbated odor emission due to increased microbial activity with all the different units showing maximum odorous gas production at the highest temperatures used (35 °C and 45 °C) in this study. The maximum total odor activity value (OAV) of 353106 was obtained for anoxic and anaerobic unit at 45 °C. The variation in composition of odor-causing gases was also dependent on wastewater characteristics tha

Re-evaluation of boundaries of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus oralis and demonstration of multiple later synonyms of Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus thalassemiae: description of Streptococcus mitis subsp. carlssonii subsp. nov. and emended description of Streptococcus mitis.

The commensal species Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus oralis are genetically diverse to a degree that challenges traditional definitions of species. This causes automatic identification based on DNA sequences or cellular extract profiles problematic. Based on an initial analysis of 266 genomes, we subjected a subset of 100 representative genomes to detailed phylogenetic, pairwise distance and gene pattern analyses. S. mitis and S. oralis constitute a continuum of clones that are genetically unique. To recognize most isolates as separate species is biologically and practically meaningless

Effect of a buried knot in the healing process of dental extraction sites: a prospective study in cats.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to evaluate the effect of the buried-knot suture technique on gingival wound healing in cats undergoing dental extractions. We hypothesised that a simple buried-knot interrupted suture would provide a healing advantage at the extraction sites.MethodsA prospective, randomised, split-mouth design was used, involving 40 cats sequentially included in the study. Each side of the mouth was sutured using simple interrupted sutures, with and without a buried knot. Healing was assessed at 2, 4 and 6 weeks postoperatively through visual inspection of the maxillary sites. Indic

A colorimetric POCT mediated by poly(tannic acid)-capped AgNPs for the detection of hazardous H₂S: Applications in meat spoilage monitoring and halitosis diagnosis.

This study proposes a novel hydrophilic point-of-care testing (POCT) integrated with poly(tannic acid)-capped silver nanoparticles (PTA-AgNPs) designed to facilitate the naked-eye detection of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in food and human breath. We synthesize PTA-AgNPs using a handheld syringe filter by combining tannic acid, which serves as both a reducing and capping agent, with silver nitrate as the source of metal ions. Herein, a cellulose acetate syringe filter served as the substrate, facilitating the on-site surface dispersion of PTA-AgNPs. The PTA-AgNPs exhibit high stability, optical sens

Association between oral bacterial species and halitosis: findings from a study of a community-based Japanese population.

Halitosis is known to be associated with oral bacteria; however, its specific relationship with particular bacterial species within the oral microbiota remains uncertain. Our objective was to identify oral bacterial species associated with volatile sulfur compound (VSC) production that contribute to halitosis in a community-based Japanese population. This study included 1018 participants. Tongue plaque samples were collected and the oral microbiome was analyzed via 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing. Participants with VSC levels greater than 250 ppb were categorized as having oral malodor. Linear di
