In October of 1983, we sent a questionnaire on suction lipectomy to 2524 U.S. and Canadian members of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. Six-hundred and twelve plastic surgeons returned questionnaires (24.2 percent response rate). The erythema-migrans-disease is closely related to Lyme-disease as described in the USA, and represents a tickborne spirochetosis with highest incidence during summer and autumn. Besides nonspecific general symptoms in its earlier stages, it is characterized by a distinctive erythema migrans; later, additional neurological, cardiac and/or arthritic symptoms may develope. Its typical neurologic complication, the lymphocytic meningoradiculitis Garin-Bujadoux-Bannwarth, was observed in three children whose clinical features illustrate the great variability of symptoms of Erythema-migrans-disease.

All surgical procedures are associated with risks. They may be divided into undesired sequelae, which are normal and expected, and complications, which are not normal or expected. The undesired sequelae of suction lipectomy are contour irregularities, hypesthesia, edema, ecchymosis, and pigmentary deposits. The potential complications are blood loss, hematoma, seroma, infection, greater saphenous vein thrombosis, fat emboli, and skin slough. These are discussed in detail.

Wrist thermotopography in children with injured median and ulnar nerves, carried out with the help of a thermograph and liquid crystals, makes it possible to diagnose a type of the injury and to elaborate indicators for surgical treatment. The use of the dibasol test allows a better identification of zones with different degrees of sensitivity impairment. The usual assessment of sensitivity by hand is biased by many subjective criteria both from the investigator and the investigated. They can be largely excluded with a rapid and simple method by estimation of the lowest threshold of irritability and pain using electric high-frequency current. The extent of the deranged sensitivity can be expressed numerically in any skin area. As a result of the reproducibility such an assessment of sensibility is useful for clinical and diagnostic purposes.

Six cases are reported that conform to Wartenberg's description of migrant sensory neuritis. This is a benign relapsing and remitting condition in which pain and subsequent loss of sensation in the distribution of individual cutaneous nerves is induced by movement of the limbs inducing stretch. Sural nerve biopsy in one case showed loss of large myelinated fibres, axonal sprouting and some changes suggestive of ischaemia.

Tests for graphesthesia and for directional cutaneous kinesthesia (DCK) were performed on a large series of neurological patients and normal subjects, in addition to the standard tests for discriminative sensation. Defects in graphesthesia and DCK were found with lesions at all levels of the nervous system. Graphesthesia was more often and more severely affected than DCK. These functions when impaired were always associated with other sensory defects (directional joint kinesthesia, two-point discrimination, etc.) in different combinations. Three cases of leprosy are reported. In all patients, the diagnosis was made by finding Hansen bacilli in skin lesions, nasal secretions and ears, and the immunological typing of leprosy was established. Conduction velocity of motor and sensory nerves was measured and muscle biopsies were obtained. Histochemical typing of muscle fibers and measurement of the terminal innervation ratio of motor axon vitally stained with methylene blue were performed. A subclinical involvement of peripheral motor nerves was demonstrated by these investigations.
