Neurobehavioral Disorders: The Corticolimbic System in Health and Disease.

The corticolimbic system (prefrontal cortices, amygdala, and hippocampus) integrates emotion with cognition and produces a behavioral output that is flexible based on the environmental circumstances. It also modulates pain, being implicated in pathophysiology of maladaptive pain. Because of the anatomic and function overlap between corticolimbic circuitry for pain and emotion, the pathophysiology for maladaptive pain conditions is extremely complex. Addressing environmental needs and underlying triggers is more important than pharmacotherapy when dealing with feline orofacial pain syndrome or

Corneal nerves in health and disease.

The cornea is the most sensitive structure in the human body. Corneal nerves adapt to maintain transparency and contribute to corneal health by mediating tear secretion and protective reflexes and provide trophic support to epithelial and stromal cells. The nerves destined for the cornea travel from the trigeminal ganglion in a complex and coordinated manner to terminate between and within corneal epithelial cells with which they are intricately integrated in a relationship of mutual support involving neurotrophins and neuromediators. The nerve terminals/receptors carry sensory impulses genera

A Case of Feline T-cell Lymphoma with Tropism for Striated Muscle and Peripheral Nerve.

An 11-year-old female American shorthair cat was presented with a 3-month history of hindlimb ataxia and knuckling of the left forelimb. Clinical abnormalities included weight loss, hyperaesthesia of the neck and back, cardiac murmur and systemic muscle atrophy. The cat died 10 days after the initial presentation and a necropsy examination was performed. Grossly, extensive pale lesions were seen in the wall of the left ventricle and the septum of the heart. There were no detectable masses in the heart, skeletal muscles or peripheral nerves. Histopathological examination revealed diffuse, exten

Conservative management following closed reduction of traumatic anterior dislocation of the shoulder.

BACKGROUND: Acute anterior shoulder dislocation, which is the most common type of dislocation, usually results from an injury. Subsequently, the shoulder is less stable and is more susceptible to re-dislocation or recurrent instability (e.g. subluxation), especially in active young adults. After closed reduction, most of these injuries are treated with immobilisation of the injured arm in a sling or brace for a few weeks, followed by exercises. This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2006 and last updated in 2014. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits and harms) of con

Differences in pain thresholds elicited by intraoral electrical stimuli between individuals with and without diabetes mellitus.

There is little evidence of sensation in individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) in the dental research field. We investigated whether pain thresholds (PTs) differ between individuals with and without DM (non-DM; NDM). To this end, we assessed whether PTs obtained from the oral cavity, hands, and feet differed from each other and across groups, and whether PTs differed for the three current frequencies used for testing (2000 Hz, 250 Hz, and 5 Hz). Pain threshold measurements were obtained from the oral mucosa and the tips of the fingers and toes of 56 volunteers, including 21 individuals with

Feline hyperaesthesia syndrome with self-trauma to the tail: retrospective study of seven cases and proposal for an integrated multidisciplinary diagnostic approach.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: This was a retrospective study on the clinical features and response to treatment in seven cats with feline hyperaesthesia syndrome (FHS) and tail mutilation. FHS is a poorly understood disorder characterised by skin rippling over the dorsal lumbar area, episodes of jumping and running, excessive vocalisation, and tail chasing and self-trauma. The majority of the cats were young, with a median age of 1 year at the onset of clinical signs, male (n = 6) and with access to the outdoors (n = 5). Multiple daily episodes of tail chasing and self-trauma were reported in five cats

Neurotrophic keratopathy.

Neurotrophic Keratopathy (NK) refers to a condition where corneal epitheliopathy leading to frank epithelial defect with or without stromal ulceration (melting) is associated with reduced or absent corneal sensations. Sensory nerves serve nociceptor and trophic functions, which can be affected independently or simultaneously. Loss of trophic function and consequent epithelial breakdown exposes the stroma making it susceptible to enzymatic degradation. Nerve pathology can range from attrition to aberrant re-generation with corresponding symptoms from anaesthesia to hyperaesthesia/allodynia. Man

Severe CNS angiostrongyliasis in a young marine: a case report and literature review.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the most common cause of eosinophilic meningitis worldwide. Infection typically occurs through ingestion of undercooked molluscs or vegetables contaminated by infective larvae. Endemic regions were previously limited to southeast Asia and the Pacific basin; however, this parasite is seeing an alarming increase in global distribution with reported cases in more than 30 countries, including several states in the USA. Although infection typically results in meningitis, a broad spectrum of CNS involvement and severity is emerging as diagnostic methods (such as real-t

At-home laser treatment of oral neuronal disorders: Case reports.

The neuronal disorders occurring in the oral district are mainly anaesthesia, paraesthesia, hypoesthesia and hyperaesthesia and they may occur frequently after surgical procedures. Medical treatment depends on degree of severity of the nerve injury but, in every case, it must be immediately carried out to reduce immune inflammatory reaction. The aim of this report is to investigate the effectiveness in the recovery of the peripheral nerve lesions of a new laser device recently proposed by the commerce that, due to its reduced size and to be a class I laser according the ANSI classification, ma

Severe muscle fasciculations and tremor in a cat with hypochloraemic metabolic alkalosis secondary to duodenal obstruction.

CASE SUMMARY: An 18-month-old, female spayed, Australian Mist cat presented with a 24 h history of muscle tremors and inappetence progressing to collapse with generalised muscle fasciculations. The cat was diagnosed with a hypochloraemic metabolic alkalosis due to a duodenal foreign body found to be a trichobezoar at coeliotomy. The cat made a complete recovery after enterotomy to remove the trichobezoar, with cessation of neuromuscular clinical signs and normalisation of its electrolyte and acid-base imbalances. RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: Muscle fasciculations and tremors in cats can b

Novel incidental finding of Hepatozoon canis infection in two dogs of the same household in Trinidad, West Indies.

A five-year old mixed breed bitch was presented to the veterinary clinic in lateral recumbency with a history of anorexia and muscle hyperaesthesia. Examination of the blood smear of this animal revealed the presence of Hepatozoon spp. gamonts in the neutrophils and monocytes with a parasitaemia level of approximately 2%. Complete blood count (CBC) revealed a neutrophilia, and a normocytic normochromic non-regenerative anaemia which were consistent with Hepatozoon spp. infections. Diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the 18S rRNA gene followed by DNA sequ

Iatrogenic Injuries of the Palmar Branch of the Median Nerve Following Volar Plate Fixation of the Distal Radius.

BACKGROUND: Our aims were to identify iatrogenous injuries to the palmar branch of the median nerve sustained during volar plate fixation of the distal radius, make the clinician aware of this relatively uncommon complication of distal radius fixation, to emphasise common threads in symptomatology and to propose an algorithm for evaluation and management. METHODS: Retrospectively interrogating our database over a 5 year period, the case records, neurophysiology records, operative records, therapy records were reviewed. The data was analysed with regard to the grade of surgeon performing the p

A simple suture-guiding device for minimally invasive Achilles tendon repair.

BACKGROUND: Our hypothesis is to utilize a simple suture-guiding device for minimally invasive repair of Achilles tendon without any extra cost with a minimal risk of rerupture. The purpose of this study is to investigate the results of our minimally invasive technique for Achilles tendon repair using a simple ovarian clamp for suture guiding. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with acute Achilles tendon rupture were treated with minimally invasive repair by an expert orthopaedic surgeon. Instead of an Achillon device, an ovarian clamp was directed to the proximal and distal parts of the
