A Randomized, Double-Blinded Pilot Study Comparing Synthetic Versus Human-Derived Topical Epidermal Growth Factor for Facial Rejuvenation and Psychosocial Perception.

BACKGROUND: Topical growth factor-containing cosmeceuticals are widely used to improve visible signs of facial photoaging. Interest has increased in peptide-based alternatives that aim to support similar regenerative pathways without relying on human-derived biologics. AIM: To compare the clinical efficacy, tolerability, and exploratory psychosocial perception outcomes of a topical recombinant epidermal growth factor (REGF), oligopeptide-1, serum with a human-derived growth factor (operationally labeled HDEGF) serum. METHODS: This was a 12-week, prospective, randomized, double-blinded, paral

The Efficacy and Safety of a Single Treatment of High-Intensity, High-Frequency, Non-Focused Ultrasound Parallel Beams for Facial Acne Scars in Asian Patients: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory disease that often leads to changes in skin texture. While cosmetic improvement of acne scars is achievable, complete restoration remains challenging. One promising treatment is synchronous ultrasound (US) parallel beam technology, a noninvasive device that targets the mid-dermis while preserving the epidermis. This technology induces controlled thermal injury, stimulating neo-collagenesis and neo-elastinogenesis, which contribute to the improvement of atrophic acne scars. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of high-intensity, high-f

Wrinkle Reduction Using Tetrapeptide-68 Contained in an O/W Formulation: A Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Study.

Peptides, composed of 2-50 amino acids, have gained attention in anti-aging treatments due to their high safety, low irritation, and cost-effective production. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-wrinkle efficacy of Tetrapeptide-68, derived from the skin structural protein Loricrin, on periorbital wrinkles in women aged 30-65 years. A 12-week, double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted with 25 participants who applied the Tetrapeptide-68 (100 ppm) O/W formulation around the eyes. Skin physiological parameters were assessed at baseline, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Participants also compl

Update of the SFMV (French society of vascular medicine) guidelines on the conditions and safety measures necessary for thermal ablation of the saphenous veins and proposals for unresolved issues.

Venous insufficiency is a very common disease affecting about 25% of the French population (if we combine all stages of its progression). It is a complex disease and its aetiology has not yet been fully elucidated. Some of its causes are well known, such as valvular dysfunction, vein wall defect, and the suctioning effect common to all varicose veins. These factors are generally associated and together lead to dysfunction of one or more of the saphenous veins. Saphenous vein dysfunction is revealed by ultrasound scan, a reflux lasting more than 0.5 seconds indicating venous incompetence. The p

Oral Intake of Hydrangea serrata (Thunb.) Ser. Leaves Extract Improves Wrinkles, Hydration, Elasticity, Texture, and Roughness in Human Skin: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study.

Previously, we reported that the hot water extract of Hydrangea serrata leaves (WHS) and its active component, hydrangenol, possess in vitro and in vivo effects on skin wrinkles and moisturization. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to clinically evaluate the effect of WHS on human skin. Participants (n = 151) were randomly assigned to receive either WHS 300 mg, WHS 600 mg, or placebo, once daily for 12 weeks. Skin wrinkle, hydration, elasticity, texture, and roughness parameters were assessed at baseline and after 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Compared to the placebo, ski

A novel photonumeric hand grading scale for hand rejuvenation.

BACKGROUND: Few scales are currently available to evaluate changes in hand volume. We aimed to develop a hand grading scale for quantitative assessments of dorsal hand volume with additional consideration of changes in skin texture; to validate and prove the precision and reproducibility of the new scale; and to demonstrate the presence of clinically significant differences between grades on the scale. METHODS: Five experienced plastic surgeons developed the Hand Volume Rating Scale (HVRS) and rated 91 images. Another five plastic surgeons validated the scale using 50 randomly selected images

Treatment of post-burn and post-traumatic atrophic scars with fractional CO2 laser: experience at a tertiary care centre.

Scars are abnormal wound responses in predisposed individuals. They occur after any kind of wound and skin inflammation in predisposed individuals. Despite their benign nature, they can be aesthetically disabling. Although several approaches have been tried in their management, most of them have produced poor results. This study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of fractional CO2 laser treatment in the management of post-burn and post-traumatic scars. One hundred consecutive patients (77 females and 23 males) affected by post-burn scars as well as post-traumatic atrophic scars were treate

Musculoskeletal architecture of the prey capture apparatus in salamandrid newts with multiphasic lifestyle: does anatomy change during the seasonal habitat switches?

Some newt species change seasonally between an aquatic and a terrestrial life as adults, and are therefore repeatedly faced with different physical circumstances that affect a wide range of functions of the organism. For example, it has been observed that seasonally habitat-changing newts display notable changes in skin texture and tail fin anatomy, allowing one to distinguish an aquatic and a terrestrial morphotype. One of the main functional challenges is the switch between efficient aquatic and terrestrial prey capture modes. Recent studies have shown that newts adapt quickly by showing a h

Carbon dioxide laser treatment in Hailey-Hailey disease: a series of 8 patients.

BACKGROUND: Hailey-Hailey disease (HHD), or benign familial pemphigus, is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by the formation of blisters. Eruptions are usually located in large skin folds, and when blisters become infected the condition can be very painful and disabling. HHD is difficult to treat. Many topical and systemic treatments have been used to bring exacerbations under control, but none have achieved medium- to long-term remission. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of 8 patients with HHD treated with carbon dioxide laser therapy in our hospital between 199

Investigating the pathways in primary practice leading to the diagnosis of central hypothyroidism.

AIM: Clinical diagnosis of central hypothyroidism is not always obvious: patients may live for years with symptoms. Endocrinologists and biochemists have suggested that a first-line TSH strategy will lead to avoidable delays in diagnosis and treatment of patients with central hypothyroidism. In order to improve timely diagnosis, and thus decrease morbidity from a treatable disease, this study aimed to investigate the diagnostic journey of patients with central hypothyroidism in the Waikato region of New Zealand. METHOD: A retrospective convenience sample seeking note review and semi-structure

Sun-induced skin changes.

Chronic sun exposure is responsible for changes in skin texture, pigmentation, vascularity, maturation, and production of neoplasms. A 78% decrease in the lifetime incidence of basal and squamous cell carcinoma has been reported with regular use of SPF 15 sunscreen for the first 18 years of life. Actinic keratoses, sun-induced premalignant lesions of the skin, can be eliminated by mechanical and medication therapies. 5-fluorouracil therapy can be effective treatment for widespread actinic damage.

Cutaneous manifestations of canine and feline endocrinopathies.

Endocrinopathies in domestic animals exhibit a variety of metabolic abnormalities. Cutaneous manifestations of these disorders are more limited and are primarily characterized as a bilaterally symmetric nonpruritic alopecia. Subtle changes in skin texture, thickness, fragility, etc. may, in some cases, aid in establishing a diagnostic plan.
