Treatment of Dupuytren Contracture Recurrence After Surgery With Collagenase Clostridium Histolyticum: A Retrospective Multicenter Series.

PURPOSE: Dupuytren contracture (DC) is a fibroproliferative disorder characterized by collagen deposition in the palmar fascia. Treatment options include collagenase clostridium histolyticum (CCH) injection and surgery; however, DC frequently recurs after primary therapy. We hypothesized that CCH treatment could be effective and well tolerated for the treatment of contracture recurrence for patients unwilling to undergo reoperation or at high risk for complications. METHODS: This Phase 4, multicenter, noninterventional, retrospective study analyzed medical records from 10 clinical centers in

Utilization of Skin Punch Biopsy for the Diagnosis of α-Synucleinopathy in Clinical Practice.

BACKGROUND: Skin punch biopsy has been investigated as a minimally invasive tool to aid in the diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) via detection of cutaneous phosphorylated α-synuclein. The use and impact of this tool in clinical practice has not been well-characterized. OBJECTIVE: To understand the utilization of skin punch biopsies for diagnosis and management of α-synucleinopathy within a large medical system. METHODS: Three hundred charts of patients who underwent skin punch biopsy were reviewed. Of these, 149 (49.7%) met criteria for analysis (concern for α-synucleinopathy

The impact of COVID-19 vaccine reactions on secondary vaccine hesitancy.

BACKGROUND: Primary and booster vaccinations are critical for mitigating COVID-19 transmission, morbidity, and mortality. Future booster vaccine campaigns rely on an increased understanding of vaccine hesitancy. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate self-reported allergic and skin vaccine reactions as factors potentially associated with vaccine hesitancy in a nationwide vaccine allergy registry. METHODS: Responses to survey questions concerning COVID-19 vaccine perceptions, coded from free text by 2 independent reviewers. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the association betwe

The changing epidemiology of human leishmaniasis in the non-endemic country of Austria between 2000 to 2021, including a congenital case.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is caused by infection with intracellular protozoans of the genus Leishmania. Transmission occurs predominantly by the bite of phlebotomine sandflies, other routes, including congenital transmission, are rare. The disease manifests as either cutaneous, visceral or mucosal/mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. In recent years, changes in the epidemiological pattern have been reported from Europe. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A total of 311 new and 29 published leishmaniasis cases occurring between 01/01/2000 and 12/31/2021 in Austria were collected and analyzed. These encompassed 146 c

Relationship of Sporotrichosis and Infected Patients with HIV-AIDS: An Actual Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a fungal infection that can affect both humans and animals, caused by a species of thermo-dimorphic fungi of the genus Sporothrix. This pathology can be acquired by subcutaneous traumatic inoculation through contact with contaminated plants, soil or decomposing organic matter, and/or by inhalation of conidia. The infection can progress to chronic skin infection, or it can even spread to blood vessels, lymph, muscles, bones, and other organs, such as the lungs and nervous system. Those disseminated types are usually associated with cellular immunodeficiency and inf

A Phase I/II Clinical Trial to evaluate the efficacy of baricitinib to prevent respiratory insufficiency progression in onco-hematological patients affected with COVID19: A structured summary of a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Baricitinib is supposed to have a double effect on SARS-CoV2 infection. Firstly, it reduces the inflammatory response through the inhibition of the Januse-Kinase signalling transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT) pathway. Moreover, it reduces the receptor mediated viral endocytosis by AP2-associated protein kinase 1 (AAK1) inhibition. We propose the use of baricinitib to prevent the progression of the respiratory insufficiency in SARS-CoV2 pneumonia in onco-haematological patients. In this phase Ib/II study, the primary objective in the safety cohort is to describe the

Head and Neck Melanoma Incidence Trends in the Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Population of the United States and Canada, 1995-2014.

IMPORTANCE: Melanoma is one of the most common cancers worldwide, typically diagnosed in older adults. There is an increasing incidence in the younger population (age ≤40 years) in America. In addition, approximately 1 in 5 cases of melanoma affect the head and neck. However, there are limited data on the incidence of head and neck melanoma in the pediatric, adolescent, and young adult population in North America (United States and Canada). OBJECTIVE: To assess 20-year demographic and incidence changes associated with head and neck melanoma in the pediatric, adolescent, and young adult popula

IgG4-related skin disease.

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a recently established clinical entity characterized by high levels of circulating IgG4, and tissue infiltration of IgG4(+) plasma cells. IgG4-RD exhibits a distinctive fibroinflammatory change involving multiple organs, such as the pancreas and salivary and lacrimal glands. The skin lesions of IgG4-RD have been poorly characterized and may stem not only from direct infiltration of plasma cells but also from IgG4-mediated inflammation. Based on the documented cases together with ours, we categorized the skin lesions into seven subtypes: (1) cutaneous plasmacyt

Skin own bacteria may aggravate inflammatory and occlusive changes in atherosclerotic arteries of lower limbs.

AIM: Seroepidemiological studies have given rise to the hypothesis that microorganisms like Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP), Helicobacter pylori (HP), cytomegalovirus (CMV), HCV types 1 and 2, and bacteria involved in dental or other unspecified infection sites may initiate or maintain the atherosclerotic process in lower limb arteries. However, not much attention has been attached to the patient's own limb skin and deep tissues bacterial flora, activated in ischemic tissues. This flora may enhance the inflammatory and thrombotic process in the atherosclerotic arteries. Lower limb tissues are expose

Melanoma survival in the United States, 1992 to 2005.

BACKGROUND: Population-based data on melanoma survival are important for understanding the impact of demographic and clinical factors on prognosis. OBJECTIVE: We describe melanoma survival by age, sex, race/ethnicity, stage, depth, histology, and site. METHODS: Using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data, we calculated unadjusted cause-specific survival up to 10 years from diagnosis for 68,495 first primary cases of melanoma diagnosed from 1992 to 2005. Cox multivariate analysis was performed for 5-year survival. Data from 1992 to 2001 were divided into 3 time periods to compare s

Scratch-patch and patch testing in drug allergy--an assessment of specificity.

BACKGROUND: Adverse drug reactions occur frequently in daily practice, but the identification of the eliciting drugs is difficult due to a lack of standardized procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare scratch-patch and patch tests prospectively with frequently used drugs in persons exposed or not exposed to the drug in order to define a nonirritating concentration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Altogether, 23 different drugs, mainly antibiotics and analgesics, were evaluated. Any contraindications for patch tests were excluded by a questionnaire. Sixty-one healthy individuals we

Polymyositis: an overdiagnosed entity.

BACKGROUND: According to widely used criteria (Bohan and Peter criteria, 1975), dermatomyositis (DM) is differentiated from polymyositis (PM) only by skin changes. More recent criteria also include histopathologic characteristics enabling the distinction between PM and DM and the differentiation of sporadic inclusion body myositis (s-IBM) from PM. The authors investigated the applicability of diagnostic features for diagnosing PM and DM. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective follow-up study of 165 patients with 1) a previous diagnosis of myositis; 2) subacute onset of symmetric, prox

[Cellular and humoral immunity in atopic dermatitis].

In vitro tests of cellular and humoral immunity were analysed by: T and B lymphocytes, T4 and T8 lymphocyte subsets, lymphocyte blast transformation tests with unspecified mitogenom--phytohemaglutinin, C3 and C4 components of the complement and circulating immune complexes at patients from 6 to 54 years old who suffered from atopic dermatitis without any other clinical symptom of atopy (so called "pure" atopic dermatitis). Parameters of cellular and humoral immunity were analysed in the active and quiescent phase of illness. The results were statistically analyzed by Student's "t" test and com
