Abnormal head movements in neurological conditions: a knowledge-based dataset with application to cervical dystonia.

Abnormal head movements (AHMs) manifest across a broad spectrum of neurological disorders, however the absence of a multi-condition resource integrating kinematic measurements, clinical severity scores, and patient demographics constitutes a persistent barrier to the development of AI-driven diagnostic tools. To address this gap, this study introduces NeuroPose-AHM, a knowledge-based dataset of neurologically induced AHMs constructed through a multi-LLM extraction framework applied to 1,430 peer-reviewed publications. The dataset contains 2,763 patient-group-level records spanning 57 neurologi

Dystonia as an early and prominent feature in a patient with CYP2U1 gene mutation: expanding the phenotype of SPG56-a case report.

Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias (HSPs) are a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders primarily characterized by progressive lower limb spasticity and weakness. Among them, Spastic Paraplegia Type 56 (SPG56) is a rare autosomal recessive form caused by CYP2U1 mutations. While spasticity is the hallmark of SPG56, recent reports have shown expanding phenotypic variability, including dystonia. We report an 8-month-old Arab male who presented with generalized tonic seizures and abnormal head movements, later identified as dystonic in nature. MRI revealed cerebral atrophy and delayed myeli

Vibro-tactile stimulation of the neck induces head righting in people with cervical dystonia.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical dystonia (CD) is characterized by involuntary neck muscle spasms that lead to abnormal head movements or postures. It is associated with somatosensory (tactile and proprioceptive) dysfunction. Here we tested whether vibro-tactile stimulation (VTS) of the cervical muscles constitutes a non-invasive form of neuromodulation of the somatosensory system that can provide temporary symptom relief for people with CD. MATERIAL AND METHOD: In a multi-centre study, 67 CD patients (44 female) received VTS to sternocleidomastoid and/or trapezius muscles for up to 45 min under 9 diff

Bobble-head doll syndrome and Suprasellar Arachnoid cyst: A rare experience and systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Bobble-head doll syndrome (BHDS) is a rare movement disorder characterized by continuous or periodic head movements. The head nodding or bobbing occurs either forward and backward (yes-yes) or side-to-side movement (no-no) direction at a 2-3 Hz frequency. It is due to lesions in and around the third ventricle, causing pressure on periventricular neuronal structures (thalami). The most common lesions are suprasellar arachnoid cysts. We intend to analyze the clinical presentation, imaging findings, treatment options, and surgical outcome of BHDS in suprasellar arachnoid cysts. METHO

Co-existent Rhabdoid Tumor of The Kidney and Brain in a Male Infant: A Rare Case.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney (MRTK) is a rare neoplasm of infancy. We report a case of a nine-month-old male infant who presented to the pediatrics outpatient department with the history of fever, lethargy, and abnormal head movements. On gross examination, the patient had a firm, non-tender, intra-abdominal mass at the right lumbar region with irregular margins. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen revealed a lobulated soft tissue arising from the kidney with areas of necrosis. Brain magnetic resonance imaging was also performed, which showed a large heterogeneous lesion in the p

Physiology of midbrain head movement neurons in cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Early theories for cervical dystonia, as promoted by Hassler, emphasized the role of the midbrain interstitial nucleus of Cajal. Focus then shifted to the basal ganglia, and it was further supported with the success of deep brain stimulation. Contemporary theories suggested the role of the cerebellum, but even more recent hypotheses renewed interest in the midbrain. Although the pretectum was visited on several occasions, we still do not know about the physiology of midbrain neurons in cervical dystonia. METHODS: We analyzed the unique database of pretectal neurons collected in th

A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study of Head Movements in Cervical Dystonia.

Cervical dystonia (CD) is a neurological disorder characterized by abnormal movements and postures of the head. The brain regions responsible for these abnormal movements are not well understood, because most imaging techniques for assessing regional brain activity cannot be used when the head is moving. Recently, we mapped brain activation in healthy individuals using functional magnetic resonance imaging during isometric head rotation, when muscle contractions occur without actual head movements. In the current study, we used the same methods to explore the neural substrates for head movemen

Electrophysiological and structural MRI correlates of dystonic head rotation in drug-naïve patients with torticollis.

INTRODUCTION: We tested whether a change in head/neck position initiates head deviation in drug-naïve patients with cervical dystonia and to identify the electrophysiological and neuroanatomical correlates of dystonic head rotation. METHODS: Twenty-five consecutive drug-naïve patients with cervical dystonia and 25 healthy controls underwent the simultaneous surface electromyographic (EMG) recording of sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle contractions during head/neck position changes, blink reflex recovery cycle (BRrc), DAT-SPECT, and advanced structural neuroimaging analysis using voxel-based mo

Looking the cow in the eye: deletion in the NID1 gene is associated with recessive inherited cataract in Romagnola cattle.

Cataract is a known condition leading to opacification of the eye lens causing partial or total blindness. Mutations are known to cause autosomal dominant or recessive inherited forms of cataracts in humans, mice, rats, guinea pigs and dogs. The use of large-sized animal models instead of those using mice for the study of this condition has been discussed due to the small size of rodent lenses. Four juvenile-onset cases of bilateral incomplete immature nuclear cataract were recently observed in Romagnola cattle. Pedigree analysis suggested a monogenic autosomal recessive inheritance. In additi

Joubert syndrome: the molar tooth sign of the mid-brain.

Joubert syndrome (JS) is a very rare, autosomal-recessive condition. It is characterized by agenesis of cerebellar vermis, abnormal eye movements with nystagmus, episodes of hyperpnea and apnea, delayed generalized motor development, retinal coloboma and dystrophy and, sometimes, multicystic kidney disease. The importance of recognizing JS is related to the outcome and its potential complications. Prenatal diagnosis by ultarsonography and antenatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is also possible. We have diagnosed a case of JS in a male infant with history of delayed mental and motor milesto

Abnormal head movement in a patient with tuberculous meningitis.

The bobble-head doll syndrome is characterised by abnormal head movements. These head movements are usually 'yes-yes' (up and down) type; rarely, head movements are 'no-no' (side-to-side) type. Commonly described causes of the bobble-head doll syndrome include third ventricular tumours, suprasellar arachnoid cysts, aqueductal stenosis and other lesions in the region of the third ventricle of the brain. We report a case of tuberculous meningitis with hydrocephalus; in this patient bobble-head doll syndrome developed following external ventricular drainage. In our patient, placement of intravent

Bobble head doll syndrome in a child with a third ventricular cyst and hydrocephalus.

INTRODUCTION: The bobble head doll syndrome, mainly affecting children under 10 years of age, is a rare and surgically treatable movement disorder characterized by head bobbing occurring at a rate of 2-3 times/s. Its pathophysiological mechanism is not well known but two main factors are commonly associated with the condition: a dilatation of the third ventricle and, more frequently, a cystic lesion rather than a solid mass in the region of the third ventricle. ILLUSTRATIVE CASE: The illustrative case concerns a child with a third ventricular cystic lesion and hydrocephalus who had experience

Alexithymia is no risk factor for exacerbation in spasmodic torticollis patients.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether alexithymia is a risk factor for exacerbation in spasmodic torticollis (ST). METHODS: ST patients (2 x 10) with high vs. low alexithymia scores (mean score on the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale [TAS-20]=69.2 vs. 28.7) were compared on physiological, motor and subjective responses to a cognitive and an emotional laboratory stressor. Changes in sustained abnormal head/shoulder positions and maximum range of motion (ROM) of the cervical spine were kinematically quantified. Necrotizing meningoencephalitis and pneumonitis in a simian immunodeficiency virus-infected rhesus macaque due to Acanthamoeba.

Free-living amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba can cause a fatal disease of the brain in humans called granulomatous amoebic encephalitis. We present a case of meningoencephalitis and pneumonitis in a simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected rhesus macaque caused by Acanthamoeba sp. The animal became ill 176 days after intravenous inoculation with SIVmac251 after a short history of weight loss and a sudden onset of hind limb paresis and abnormal head movements. Histopathologic examination of hematoxylin and eosin-stained tissues revealed multifocal to coalescing necrotizing neutrophilic men

Suprasellar arachnoid cyst presenting with bobble-head doll movements: a report of 3 cases.

We report a series of three patients with suprasellar arachnoid cysts who presented with a rare 'bobble-head doll' syndrome. The abnormal head movements improved after surgical evacuation of the cysts in all the three cases. Various pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the bobble-head doll syndrome are discussed. The literature on suprasellar arachnoid cysts is briefly reviewed.

To test or not? The value of diagnostic tests in cervical dystonia.

It has long been suspected that idiopathic cervical dystonia is result of a dysfunction of the brain, but the cause of the disease has been elusive. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostical value of different radiological and laboratory tests in cases of cervical dystonia. Cerebral computer tomography and/or cerebral magnetic imaging were carried out in all of the 149 patients who were included in this study. A total of 25 scans revealed some minor findings that did not alter patients' management. Of the 128 cervical plain x-ray examinations, 63.1% showed degenerative change

Pharmacological and surgical options for the treatment of cervical dystonia.

Cervical dystonia (CD) is a condition in which patients experience involuntary and abnormal head movements, such as tilting, twisting, or extension, often accompanied by pain. Although the exact pathologic mechanisms underlying idiopathic CD have not yet been identified, a number of therapeutic strategies have been developed to alleviate the symptoms of this disorder. Oral medications include anticholinergic agents, dopamine receptor antagonists, and GABAmimetic agents. These drugs are employed in a trial-and-error manner and have a low rate of efficacy. Localized therapy using botulinum toxin

Tolerance to beta,beta'-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN)-induced neurobehavioural and vestibular toxicity in diabetic rats.

The present investigation was undertaken to study the neurotoxic effects of beta,beta'-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) in normal, diabetic and insulin-treated diabetic rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into five groups: control, IDPN, diabetes, diabetes plus IDPN and diabetes plus insulin plus IDPN. The diabetes was induced with a single i.p. injection of streptozotocin (50 mg kg(-1)). One month after the induction of diabetes, the rats were treated with IDPN (100 mg kg(-1), i.p.) daily for 11 days. One of the diabetic groups treated with IDPN also received daily injection of insulin (25

Intermittent horizontal saccade failure ('ocular motor apraxia') in children.

BACKGROUND: Ocular motor apraxia (OMA) in childhood is a poorly understood condition involving a failure of horizontal saccades. OMA is thought to be rare but the literature indicates wide clinical associations. OMA is often identified by abnormal head movements, but failure of reflexive quick phases has been reported in all but a few patients. The extent of this oculomotor disorder was examined in a large group of children with diverse clinical backgrounds. METHODS: The degree of quick phase failure during horizontal vestibular and optokinetic nystagmus was measured using DC electro-oculogra
