How Normal Are "Normal" Errors of Language and Cognition?

Purpose The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency and severity of common errors and inefficiencies of language and cognition in the general population. Method Item-response theory parameters were analyzed from the Neuro-QOL Cognitive Function Item Bank v2.0, which references a large normative sample that mirrors the demographics of the U.S. Census. Item parameters were analyzed to reveal the most likely responses to items about errors and inefficiencies of language and cognition. These most likely responses were estimated for each of 25 levels of theta to reveal normal and gradations

Incident Mobility Disability, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Mortality in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Mobility disability and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are common in aging and both are associated with risk of death. This study tested the hypothesis that risk of death differs by the order in which mobility disability and MCI occurred. METHODS: One thousand two hundred and sixty-two community-dwelling older adults were unimpaired at baseline and followed annually. Mobility disability was based on measured gait speed, and MCI was based on cognitive performance tests. A multistate Cox model simultaneously examined incidences of mobility disability and MCI to determine wheth

Chronic conditions as predictors of later life disability employment exit: a gendered analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Increasing life expectancy has led governments to implement reforms aimed at delaying retirement. Chronic conditions are an important barrier to this given their association with pain, functional limitations, depression and ultimately lower life expectancy. Chronic diseases are gendered in terms of these characteristics, as well as their population prevalence. I examined the extent to which gender moderates the extent to which different chronic conditions lead to disability employment exit, the proportion of exits they account for and key mediators in this process. METHODS: Data f

Mobility and Participation of People With Disabilities Using Mobility Assistive Technologies: Protocol for a Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Many community-dwelling individuals living with a disability use mobility assistive technologies (MATs). MAT devices are generally beneficial for individuals with mobility impairments. However, less is known about the specific factors that may foster or deter mobility and community participation. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this protocol is to describe the methodology for a study including three main objectives: (1) to understand the places people using MAT go and the things they do, (2) to identify perceived barriers and facilitators as well as users' desired environmental modifica

Combining ultra-high resolution ion mobility spectrometry with cryogenic IR spectroscopy for the study of biomolecular ions.

Double-resonance spectroscopic schemes in combination with cryogenic ion traps are the go-to techniques when isomer-specific high-resolution spectra are required for analysis of molecular ions. Their limitation lies in the requirement for well-resolved, isomer-specific absorption bands as well as in the potentially time-consuming steps to identify each isomer. We present an alternative approach where isomeric species are readily separated using ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) and selected prior to cryogenic spectroscopic analysis. To date, most IMS approaches suffer from relatively low resolut

Which one? What kind? How many? Types, causes, and prevalence of disability among U.S. adults.

BACKGROUND: Quantifying the number of people with and types of disabilities is helpful for medical, policy, and public health planning. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: To update prior estimates on types, prevalence, and main causes of disability among U.S. adults using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) data. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the SIPP 2008 Panel Wave 6 interviews collected May-August 2010. Analyses were restricted to non-institutionalized adults ages ≥18 years (n = 66,410). Disability was ascertained via five non-mutually exclusive components: 1) specific a

Trajectories of mobility limitations over 24 years and their characterization by shift work and leisure-time physical activity in midlife.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate trajectories of mobility limitations (MLs) over a period of 24 years. In addition, we aimed to study how shift work and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) in midlife predict assignment to MLs trajectories separately for those retired on statutory pensions (SPs) and on disability pensions (DPs). METHODS: Subjects who responded MLs questionnaires (1985-2009, N = 3048) in Finnish Longitudinal Study on Aging Municipal Employees were included in this prospective cohort study. LTPA and shift work were measured during baseline. International Classification of F

Associations Between Physical Health Limitations and Community Participation Among People With and Without Serious Mental Illnesses.

OBJECTIVE: Research has suggested that individuals with serious mental illnesses are not as physically healthy as the general population and are more likely to experience physical illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Less is known about how physical health may be related to community participation among individuals with serious mental illnesses, although research with adults in the general population has suggested strong negative associations between health impairments and engagement in a variety of activity domains. METHODS: In this study, the aut

B Cell-Activating Factor Is Associated with Testosterone and Smoking Status in Non-Ambulatory Men with Chronic Spinal Cord Injury.

B cell-mediated autoimmunity may contribute to poor neurological outcomes after spinal cord injury (SCI). B cell-activating factor (BAFF) is a key cytokine involved in B cell development, proliferation, activation, and survival whose expression is elevated in men with chronic SCI. The aim of this study was to assess factors associated with circulating BAFF in non-ambulatory males with chronic SCI. We assessed the association between clinical and demographic factors, health habits, and circulating BAFF levels in a convenience sample of 43 non-ambulatory men with chronic spinal cord injury (≥ 1

Disability and food access and insecurity: A scoping review of the literature.

A scoping review was conducted, using a social ecological model approach, of 106 articles examining the effect of disability on food access and (in)security. Results of the review show a consistently increased risk of food insecurity among people with disabilities with a higher risk for mental health disabilities, and among disabled younger adults. Mediators of this relationship were underexplored. Disability was mainly conceptualized as a problematic category preventing food access while ignoring disabling social and environmental barriers. A social model of disability can inform future resea

Unraveling upper extremity performance in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: A biophysical model.

This study aimed to identify critical physiological outcome variables underlying reduced upper extremity task performance in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). These critical variables were used to propose an explanatory biophysical model of the upper extremity working mechanisms in DMD. Twenty-three DMD patients (8-21 years) participated in this study. Correlations with Brooke scale and Performance of Upper Limb (PUL) score were very high for maximal active joint angle, high for maximal muscle torque and maximal surface electromyography amplitude, and moderate for mean echogenicity and maxima

A competitive hopping model for carrier transport in disordered organic semiconductors.

Here, we formulate a theoretical transport model for disordered organic semiconductors based on the concept of competitive hopping. We demonstrate theoretically that carriers occupying states with higher energy levels have higher probabilities and higher rates of hopping to the transport energy. This model suggests a temperature (T) dependence of mobility (μ) given by lg(μ) ∝ T-n, where the low carrier density and small energetic disorder limitation of the competitive hopping model gives the non-Arrhenius lg(μ) ∝ T-2 relation, and the high carrier density and large energetic disorder limitatio
