The effect of having a partner on activities of daily living in men and women aged 82-87 years.

BACKGROUND: Physical functioning is an important determinant of mortality and morbidity in older adults and there may be differences by gender and marital status. This study compared disability, measured by the ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), between older men and women who are either partnered or not partnered. METHODS: Participants included 5497 women and 1072 men aged 82-87 years from cross sectional surveys conducted in 2008 (the Health in Men Study and the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health). Ordinal l

Is leg muscle strength correlated with functional balance and mobility among inpatients in geriatric rehabilitation?

Determinants of functional balance and mobility have rarely been investigated in geriatric wards. This study examined if leg muscle strength correlates to functional balance and mobility among geriatric inpatients. Fifty inpatients, 29 women and 21 men (mean age 79.6 years) were included. Functional balance was assessed with the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and mobility was assessed with the Physiotherapy Clinical Outcome Variable Scale (COVS). Strength in the leg extension muscles was measured as 1 Repetition Maximum (1RM) in a leg press and strength in the ankle muscles was measured with Medical

Unidimensionality of the Elderly Mobility Scale in older acute medical patients: different methods, different answers.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the unidimensionality of the Elderly Mobility Scale (EMS) in an older acute medical population. STUDY DESIGN: EMS data were collected within 48 hours of hospital admission and discharge, respectively, from consecutive older acute medical patients. Rasch and factor analysis of EMS data were conducted. SETTING: Acute tertiary hospital, South Australia. RESULTS: Factor analysis identified a two-factor solution for both admission and discharge EMS data. At hospital admission (n=120), EMS data fitted the Rasch model (χ(2)=18.31, P=0.19, df=14). One item, the timed walk

Muscle strength and walking ability in diplegic cerebral palsy: implications for assessment and management.

Muscle weakness is a recognised problem in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). Changes in the understanding of motor control, and progress in the treatment of spasticity, have led to a greater appreciation that spastic muscles are also weak. In recent years weakness has been identified in isolated muscle groups, but studies quantifying the degree and distribution of weakness in multiple muscles remain limited. This study evaluated isometric lower limb muscle strength in 50 ambulant children with CP/Spastic Diplegia (mean age 11 years 7 months) at GMFCS levels I (n=14), II (n=26) and III (n=10).

Defining profiles of functional limitations in groups of older persons: how and why?

OBJECTIVE: Addressing the complexity of multiple health problems in the older population, the objective was to identify combinations of functional limitations for use in simulation analysis, to enable predictions of the potentially most severe person-environment fit (i.e., accessibility) problems among groups of older persons. METHOD: Utilizing data from 1,542 persons aged 75 to 89 years and applying Configuration Frequency Analysis, we tested which combinations of functional limitations that occurred more or less often than expected. Significant combinations were defined as type profiles and

Exercise as stigma management for individuals with onset-controllable and onset-uncontrollable spinal cord injury.

UNLABELLED: Studies have suggested that individuals with physical disabilities are often stigmatized and are perceived to possess less favorable physical and psychological characteristics than individuals without disability. PURPOSE: To investigate whether able-bodied adults' perceptions of people with different causes of spinal cord injury (SCI) are influenced by physical activity status information. METHOD AND PARTICIPANTS: Each participant (N = 198) read all five vignettes describing individuals with SCI who had varying levels of physical activity participation and cause of injury informa

Exploring extensions to working life: job lock and predictors of decreasing work function in older workers.

PURPOSE: Job lock, one form of restricted job mobility that often prevents older workers from retiring, is linked to existing health and work place problems. This study explored (i) the rate of change in work limitation for job locked and non-job locked older workers and (ii) the factors associated with these changes over a 12-month period following a work injury. METHODS: Prospective observational cohort study of adults aged  ≥55 years. Data were collected using self-completed questionnaires. Individual growth modelling was used to examine the pre- and post- injury influences on work limitat

Patient satisfaction with telerehabilitation assessments for wheeled mobility and seating.

Wheeled mobility and seating assessments for individuals with mobility impairments living in rural or distant locations are problematic due to the lack of expertise and available resources. The objective of this study was to measure satisfaction based on one's evaluation and prescription as well as comfort level when being evaluated by telerehabilitation (TR). Patient satisfaction data from real-time interactive TR clinical consultations between an expert practitioner located at least 125 miles away and four remote wheelchair clinics set up by the research team were collected and evaluated.
