Navigation in Virtual Reality Floor Mazes: Added Cognitive Demand and Its Effects on Gait and Balance in Parkinson's Disease.

Along with motor dysfunction, people with Parkinson's Disease (PD) often develop cognitive dysfunction, linked to the gait abnormality - freezing of gait (FOG). Spatial navigation in Virtual Reality Floor Mazes (VR-FM) provides a unique framework for studying the effects of cognitive load on walking, with the ability to manipulate the complexity of the cognitive load. In addition, mazes include turns which simulate indoor home environments that people with PD frequently traverse in their daily life. This study is aimed to examine the effects of increasing cognitive load, applied with VR-FM, on

Revisiting Plant Responses to Root Volume Restriction: From Leaf Acclimation to Whole Plant Growth.

Soilless cultivation is widely used to avoid soil-borne diseases, promote plant mobility, and enhance resource utilization efficiency. This often results in root restriction, and the physiological mechanism behind the reduction of plant growth under root restriction remains debated. Here, we investigated how root restriction impacts leaf photosynthetic traits, plant growth, and biomass partitioning across various developmental stages in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum), while controlling for secondary effects such as increased temperature fluctuations, reduced water availability, and altered nut

Biofeedback Speeds Adaptation to Exoskeleton Gait Assistance.

Exoskeletons may enhance mobility, but users require extensive training to receive their full benefit. While augmented feedback can accelerate motor learning, it remains difficult to apply for exoskeleton gait assistance given that desired changes depend on complex multi-joint coordination and user actions are coupled to device control dynamics. We developed a visual biofeedback system to guide novice users of an ankle exoskeleton to modify their ankle joint kinematics and foot placement toward patterns associated with improved energy economy. Biofeedback-based training doubled the energy savi

Human Activity Recognition Dataset for Pedestrians with Mobility Disabilities.

Human activity recognition (HAR) provided several benefits to people without disabilities. Researchers have provided public HAR datasets and developed technologies based on these datasets. However, the activities of pedestrians with mobility disabilities have not been actively investigated because related datasets do not exist. In this study, we compile an HAR dataset comprising basic activities for people with and without mobility disabilities (including activity categories of still, walking, crutches, walkers, manual wheelchairs, and electric wheelchairs). Our dataset contains sensor data fr

Predicting Loss of Ambulation in Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy R9.

BACKGROUND: Limb girdle muscular dystrophy type R9 (LGMDR9) results from biallelic variants in FKRP. There is limited data to predict loss of ambulation (LOA) among those with LGMDR9. METHODS: Participants in an ongoing dystroglycanopathy natural history study (NCT00313677) with FKRP variants who had achieved ambulation and were more than 3 years old were included (n = 97). LOA was defined as self-reported full-time wheelchair use, weakness preventing completion of the 10-m walk-run test (10MWT) or 10MWT time > 30 s. Interval-censored time-to-event analysis was used to determine median age at

Creating adjusted scores targeting mobility empowerment (CASTLE 2): Using response probabilities to expand interpretation of prosthetic limb users survey of mobility (PLUS-M) scores for individuals with lower limb amputation.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetists and other rehabilitation specialists often need to identify which aspects of mobility should be prioritized in order to make meaningful changes in a patient's health outcomes. By comparing a patient's responses on the Prosthetic Limb Users Survey of Mobility (PLUS-M) to predicted responses, clinicians can identify areas for improvement and provide more targeted rehabilitation. OBJECTIVE: To generate PLUS-M T-score maps based on patient presentation (ie, etiology and amputation level) to provide guidance on the next steps in a patient's rehabilitation care. DESIGN: A

Rate of Force Development During Sit-to-Stand Movement Is Associated With Locomotive Syndrome Severity: A Cross-Sectional Study.

AIM: Locomotive syndrome (LS) is defined as reduced mobility due to locomotor dysfunction. The sit-to-stand (STS) movement is a fundamental daily activity, and biomechanical parameters derived from STS capture quantitative aspects of mobility. However, their association with LS severity remains unclear. We aimed to examine whether STS parameters are associated with LS severity in this cross-sectional study. METHODS: We analyzed 1047 adults (619 males, 428 females; median age 54 years) who underwent musculoskeletal health screening. LS stage was classified into non-LS, LS1, LS2, and LS3 using

Directing Ultramicropore Architecture in Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes with Lanthanum for High-Fidelity Gas Separation.

A crucial performance ceiling has long limited carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes in demanding gas separations, a limitation stemming directly from the inability to precisely dictate their ultramicroporous architecture. Herein, we demonstrate a novel lanthanum (La)-doping strategy to precisely control the structural evolution of polyimide-based carbon CMS membranes. Lanthanum incorporation fundamentally alters pyrolysis dynamics by significantly increasing aromatic strand mobility and enabling La complexes to serve as nanoscale Langmuir templates. This entropic-driven templating effect gui

Adaptive motion planning for legged robots in unstructured terrain using deep reinforcement learning.

Legged robots are ideal for navigating unstructured terrain. Unlike wheeled robot platforms, legged robots maintain mobility over rocks, slopes, and uneven surfaces. However, motion planning in such environments remains challenging. The robot must handle unstable ground, limited sensing, and complex body dynamics. Classical control methods often fail to adapt when terrain and friction change unexpectedly. This paper presents an adaptive locomotion framework for quadrupedal robots. The controller is trained entirely in simulation using deep reinforcement learning (DRL). The DRL is trained using

Development and iterative optimization of an independently usable assistance system to assess, maintain and improve the nutritional and mobility status of older adults: an iterative usability study.

BACKGROUND: Promoting a balanced diet and regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining independence in old age. Technical assistance systems can help identify nutritional and mobility deficits and initiate appropriate interventions. We are developing a technical assistance system consisting of a measurement and training station and a tablet-based app (AS-Tra). AS-Tra is specifically designed for independent use by participants aged ≥ 70 years to assess and improve their nutritional and mobility status. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify optimization potentials of the AS-Tra system

Defect Engineering for Synergistically Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in n-Type CaTiO3 via Weakened Bond Polarity and Lattice Softening.

CaTiO3-based compounds have emerged as promising thermoelectric materials due to their environmental benignity, thermal stability, and cost-effectiveness. However, the strong polar character of the metal-oxygen bonds imposes a fundamental limitation on the electrical conductivity, thereby restricting the overall thermoelectric performance. Herein, we demonstrate that defect engineering could induce synergistic effects, manifested in (i) a weakness of chemical bond polarity, which significantly enhances carrier mobility from ∼4.9 to ∼25.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 600 K. (ii) the introduction of substanti

Perspective From the APTA Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy: The Need for Annual Mobility Assessment for Aging Adults.

During the 2023 Carole B. Lewis Lecture, Michelle Lusardi, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA, issued a call to action for the American Physical Therapy Association's Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy (APTA Geriatrics): to embrace, enact, and evaluate the effectiveness of an annual mobility screen for aging adults. This call highlighted the need to quickly identify preclinical mobility limitations that indicate those at risk for functional decline, falls, and other adverse health outcomes. By moving to a true primary prevention model aimed at identifying preclinical issues, physical therapists can share

HMGB1 Assists in Overcoming Cisplatin Resistance in Chemoresistant Human Ovarian Cancer Cells.

Cisplatin is one of the most effective chemotherapeutic agents used in the treatment of ovarian cancer. However, the frequent development of cisplatin resistance remains a significant limitation, leading to therapeutic failure and poor patient outcomes. Cisplatin cytotoxicity is attributed to the generation of toxic DNA lesions, which can be recognized and processed by a variety of proteins, including the high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) protein. HMGB1 is a multifunctional protein, which is involved in chromatin remodeling and multiple DNA damage repair pathways. In this study, we investigate

Supersaturation-engineered wafer-scale growth of anisotropic 2D organic crystals for uniform polarimetric sensing.

Organic single crystals endowed with intrinsic anisotropy hold great promise for the realization of miniaturized, polarization-sensitive photodetectors. However, conventional dip-coating approaches struggle to produce wafer-scale single-crystalline films, as the supersaturation conditions optimized for nucleation invariably conflict with those required for crystal growth, leading to fragmented domains and compromised device performance. Here, we introduce an in situ seeded dip coating (SDC) strategy that overcomes this limitation by engineering supersaturation to temporally decouple nucleation

Race/color functional limitation disparities in a "racial democracy": findings among middle-aged and older adults in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: Brazil is rapidly aging and expected to have increased rates of functional limitation. While some literature has analyzed race/color functional limitation disparities, no documented research has examined such disparities between age groups that lived through Brazil's different political regimes. Guided by a life course perspective, we examine this research gap. METHODS: We used wave 1 (2015-2016) data (n = 8,980) from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study on Aging to examine race/color disparities in difficulty with mobility, episodic memory, near vision, and hearing. We computed age g
