The "Reducing Inflammation for Greater Health Trial (RIGHT)" Study-Concept, Rationale, and Design.

The Reducing Inflammation for Greater Health Trial's (RIGHT) study is a single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial designed to test whether clazkizumab, an interleukin-6 (IL-6) inhibitor, can improve or slow decline in physical, cognitive, and vascular function in older adults, when compared to a placebo. The trial will enroll participants meeting the following inclusion criteria: (1) ≥ 70 years of age, (2) with low to moderate physical function, defined as self-reported difficulty walking 1/4 mile or climbing a flight of stairs, but able to walk 400 m at baseline exam,

Mobility Limitations and Self-Perceived Unmet Dental Needs Among Korean Adults: A Nationwide Multilevel Analysis for Integrated Care.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Self-perceived unmet dental needs reflect access barriers and inequities. In rapidly aging Korea, mobility limitations may exacerbate these barriers, yet evidence disentangling individual, household, and district-level influences is scarce. We examined the association between mobility limitations and self-perceived unmet dental needs and assessed contextual variation. METHODS: We analyzed nationally representative data from the 2024 Korea Community Health Survey (KCHS) for adults aged ≥45 years (n = 167,474). Multilevel logistic regression with district random intercept

The effect of United States firefighters' personal protective equipment on mobility and functional task performance: A scoping review.

This scoping review aims to synthesize existing evidence investigating the impact of firefighters' personal protective equipment (PPE) on mobility and performance in the United States. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Scoping Reviews, five databases were searched, and fifteen articles meeting the criteria were reviewed. Findings revealed that PPE impaired firefighters' dynamic balance (4 of 4 studies), static range of motion (all 4 studies showed various degrees of limitations), gait (3 of 3 studies), and subjective perceptions of comfort and movement ease (5 of 5 studies). In contr

Subjective slow walking speed is associated with locomotive syndrome severity in 34,935 adults undergoing medical checkups.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between locomotive syndrome (LS) and subjective walking speed in adults who underwent health checkups. We conducted a cross-sectional study of adults who underwent medical checkups at Omiya City Clinic in 2023. A total of 34,935 participants (females, 13,991 [40.0%]; mean age, 50.1 ± 9.7 years) were analyzed. All participants answered the questionnaires regarding subjective walking speed (slow or fast) and the 25-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale and underwent the two-step and stand-up tests. LS severity (non-LS, LS-1, LS-2,

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy in an Immunocompromised Child: A Case Report From a Resource-Limited Setting in Ghana.

An 8-year-old immunocompromised girl with a large septic wound on the left thigh was admitted to the facility after the failure of home treatment by the family. The child was generally stable aside from the difficulty in walking on the left leg. An improvised vacuum-assisted closure device was used to promote wound healing, as the actual device was not available. The wound experienced massive and impressive improvement within the first week of admission. Healthy and beautiful granulation tissues filled up the depth of the wound, closing it up by the third day of wound dressing. This case illus

Ecosystem functions beneath the tide: A trait-based study of tropical intertidal macrobenthos.

The intertidal zone represents a dynamic interface between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, where habitat heterogeneity plays a crucial role in shaping the structure of macrobenthic communities and ecosystem functioning. Traditional taxonomic metrics describe species composition but offer limited insight into how organisms contribute to key processes such as bioturbation, nutrient cycling, and sediment restructuring. Trait-based approaches overcome this limitation by directly linking organismal attributes to ecosystem functions, providing earlier and more mechanistic indicators of ecological

The Effect of Preoperative Nutritional Status and Muscle Quality on Functional Recovery in Patients With Hip Fractures.

PURPOSE: Functional recovery after a hip fracture is closely related to nutrition; however, the factors with the strongest influence on early postoperative mobility remain unclear. We aimed to investigate whether preoperative muscle quality (intramuscular adipose tissue content [IMAC]) and phase angle (PhA) are associated with short-term (2-week) functional recovery, and to compare their associations with those of muscle mass. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 87 patients with hip fractures who could walk before their injury and divided them into two groups: Group A (n = 43), individuals w

Safety boots' impact on comfort, mobility, performance, musculoskeletal disorders, slips, and falls in Canadian construction.

Construction is a hazardous industry, with slips, falls, and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among the most common occupational hazards. Safety boots are vital for reducing these risks and enhancing workers' comfort, mobility, and overall performance. Therefore, this study examines associations between winter safety boot features and construction workers' comfort, performance and mobility, slips, falls, and MSDs due to slips and falls. Cross-sectional survey data from 110 Canadian construction workers were analyzed using descriptive, bivariate, and multivariable logistic regression analyses.

Exploiting Weak Interlayer-Coupling ReS2 as Electron Sinks in In2S3 Heterojunctions for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production.

Indium sulfide (In2S3) is a promising photocatalyst but is hampered by rapid electron-hole recombination and limited charge carrier mobility, restricting its hydrogen evolution performance. Constructing heterojunctions with 2D sulfides is an effective strategy to improve carrier separation as their inherent in-plane carrier transport facilitates fast electron migration. However, conventional 2D sulfides often exhibit relatively strong interlayer coupling, which still leads to undesired interlayer charge hopping and consequently limits the efficiency of interfacial electron extraction from In2S

Establishing global standards on wearable technology for measuring mobility in ageing populations: an international consensus exercise.

BACKGROUND: Mobility, defined as movement in all its forms, is a hallmark of healthy ageing. As wearable technologies become increasingly integrated into population health surveillance and ageing research, the absence of standardised terminology, measurement protocols and reporting practices presents a major barrier to progress. This consensus exercise aimed to establish minimum standards for measuring mobility with wearable technology in ageing populations and set priorities for future research in the field. METHODS: A two-day, in-person consensus meeting was convened with 24 international e

What about the hands? Older adults' attitudes and perceptions of hand function.

BACKGROUND: Age-related declines in hand function are common yet often go undiagnosed until they become severe. Perceptions play an important role in seeking care, however this relationship is largely unknown for the upper limbs. METHODS: 595 older adults (mean age: : 71.8 ± 5.5y) completed an online survey about perceptions of hand function and barriers to seeking care. Participants also completed the QuickDASH and Michigan Hand Questionnaire, which were correlated with attitudes. RESULTS: Despite most respondents (85%) agreeing that hand function is important, only 43% expressed concern ab

Influences of Pre-fracture Mobility and Early Mobility on Healthcare Outcome Measures in Older Patients Undergoing Hip Fracture Surgery.

Early mobilisation (within 1-day of hip fracture surgery) improves health-related outcomes, However, the role of pre-fracture mobility has hitherto been overlooked. We postulated that both pre-fracture and early mobility independently influence patient outcome measures when admitted with hip fractures. A total of 3134 patients (71.2% women) aged 60–107 year undergoing hip fracture surgery between 01-April-2014 and 03-June-2022 were studied. Pre-fracture mobility and early mobility were regressed simultaneously in multivariable logistic models to predict outcomes and discharge destinations. Dat

Health Related Quality of Life Outcomes after Lower Extremity Amputation.

OBJECTIVE: Lower limb amputation profoundly impairs health related quality of life (HRQoL), yet comparative data across indications and amputation levels are scarce. This study evaluated EQ-5D-3L outcomes in patients with and without ischaemia undergoing major vs. minor lower extremity amputations. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort at a German level 1 trauma centre, patients (during 2010 - 2020) were classified by indication (ischaemia vs. trauma, tumour, and or infection) and amputation level (major vs. minor). Between 2023 and 2024, EQ-5D-3L interviews assessed five HRQoL dimensions. Mu

Unravelling the Connection Between Reduced Mobility and Mild Cognitive Impairment in Chronic Pain Patients Through Cluster Analysis.

Cognitive impairment has been closely associated with systemic metabolic disorders, such as oxygen and energy metabolism disorders. We used deep learning to estimate the risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in outpatients with pain (pain group) and those without pain (non-pain control group) from general blood test data reflecting systemic metabolic disorders. Univariate analysis was performed on blood test data from both groups to calculate the estimated Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. Additionally, principal component analysis was conducted on data obtained from eight assessm

Digital home-based physical activity promotion for older adults after total hip arthroplasty: protocol for the randomized controlled iPATH trial.

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) effectively alleviates pain and improves physical function. However, an increase in patients’ physical activity (PA) is often not observed after surgery. This paradox may result from short rehabilitation periods and persistent sedentary habits and be further influenced by methodological limitations of previous PA monitoring approaches. Digital home-based exercise programs and personal caching (PC) using behavioral change techniques for PA promotion, together with recent advances in PA monitoring, may offer new opportunities to address these challenges.

Does cognition affect supervised and unsupervised mobility differently in people with Parkinson's disease? A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The co-existence of cognitive and mobility impairments is frequent in people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD). Cognitive functions are associated with different types of supervised mobility, but much less is known about unsupervised mobility. METHODS: Mild-to-moderate PwPD, without severe cognitive impairment and not using walking aids, performed three hospital-based supervised mobility tasks: forward walking, instrumented timed-up-and-go (iTUG) with a lower-back-mounted inertial sensor and a 3-meter backward walking test. Forward walking speed (FWS), backward walking speed (BWS) an
