Passive Behavioral Patterns in Symptomatic WAG/Rij Rats: Dissociation From Absence Epilepsy and Sex-Dependent Link Between Early Fear Coping and Post-Stress Freezing.

BACKGROUND: Acute stress exposure can lead to delayed behavioral changes, which are widely regarded as core endophenotypes of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Identifying pre-existing behavioral traits that predict later maladaptive responses is crucial. We investigated whether early fear-related passive coping behavior during an active avoidance task predicts subsequent freezing reactions in a safe, stimulus-free environment. This context-inappropriate fear pattern may model individual vulnerability to PTSD-like symptoms. We used Wistar Albino rats from Rijswijk (WAG/Rij rats), which ar

Compound Ciwujia Granules Attenuate Stress-Induced Anxiety- and Depression-Like Behaviors via Inhibition of TNF-α-Associated Neuroinflammation in the dmPFC.

AIMS: Compound Ciwujia Granules (CWJ) have shown antidepressant-like effects, but the neural and molecular mechanisms underlying these effects remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms by which CWJ ameliorates anxiety- and depression-like behaviors. METHODS: A 6-week chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model was established in rats, and behavioral tests were performed to assess the antidepressant-like effects of CWJ. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), in vivo fiber photometry, and chemogenetic manipulation were used to identify the brain r

Anterior Hip Dislocation with Testicular Interposition: A Case Report.

CASE: A 48-year-old healthy man presented with severe inguinal pain and hip immobility after a high-energy injury. Physical examination revealed scrotal invagination and a nonpalpable testis. Imaging confirmed anterior hip subluxation and intra-articular soft-tissue interposition. After failed closed reduction, surgical exploration identified testicular entrapment. Compressive necrosis necessitated orchiectomy; stable joint reduction was achieved. The patient remained asymptomatic at 12 months. CONCLUSION: This rare case highlights the necessity of thorough perineal assessment in high-energy

Lactobacillus reuteri ATG-F4 alleviates behavioral impairment induced by chronic stress.

Chronic stress impairs quality of life by disturbing physical and psychological functioning, and increases susceptibility to a wide range of diseases. Lactobacillus reuteri ATG-F4 isolated from the fecal samples of a newborn baby alleviated chronic stress-induced anhedonia by altering the expression of neurometabolites and neurotransmitter receptors. In this study, we examined whether ATG-F4 can improve behavioral deterioration induced by chronic stress using the Laboratory Animal Behavioral Observation Registration and Analysis System (LABORAS). The continuous behavior of the mice was examine

The freeze-arrest model of catatonia: a critical neuroimaging review with evo-neurobiological integration.

Catatonia is a heterogeneous and poorly defined entity. Akinetic catatonia shares core phenomenology with the adaptive freeze-to-tonic immobility response, a threat-defense system conserved across evolution. It has been suggested that catatonia may be the maladaptive counterpart of the freeze-to-tonic immobility response. While similar brain structures are implicated in both entities, no theory-driven synthesis of neuroimaging evidence has been conducted to provide mechanistic support for this hypothesis. In this critical review, we cross-referenced available neuroimaging studies in human free

Early nursing interventions in post-stroke neurological rehabilitation: a comprehensive review of evidence predominantly from high-resource settings.

Stroke remains a leading cause of death and acquired long-term disability worldwide, and the earliest days after onset frequently shape the safety, intensity, continuity, and person-centeredness of subsequent rehabilitation. Early rehabilitation is delivered by interprofessional teams, within which nurses make a distinctive contribution through continuous surveillance, repeated bedside implementation of agreed plans, prevention of avoidable complications, and coordination across shifts and settings. This comprehensive review synthesizes contemporary evidence relevant to early nursing contribut

In vivo and computational investigation of the antidepressant-like activity of boldine from Peumus boldus in mice subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stress.

Boldine, an aporphine alkaloid mainly isolated from the bark and leaves of Peumus boldus, is reported to possess neuroprotective, antioxidant, and nootropic activities. Due to its antioxidant and neuroprotective potential, this study explored the antidepressant-like effects of boldine. Boldine (1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 mg/kg, p.o.) was evaluated for antidepressant-like activity in unstressed and stressed Swiss young male albino mice, while molecular docking (Autodock Vina) and pharmacokinetic predictions (SwissADME) provided mechanistic insights. In stressed mice, boldine significantly decreased the

Defining moribund states in zebrafish to refine fish acute toxicity tests.

In acute fish toxicity tests, mortality has traditionally served as the primary endpoint. However, in accordance with the "3Rs" principle-replacement, reduction, and refinement-there is a growing need to minimize the suffering and pain experienced by test fish. In this study we aimed to establish a behavioral framework for identifying the moribund state in zebrafish (Danio rerio), providing a humane and ethically refined alternative endpoint. Continual observation of zebrafish exposed to 10 representative chemicals allowed the documentation of 12 clinical signs, with the severity of the signs

Invasive procedures for hiccups: a national single healthcare system study.

OBJECTIVES: On rare occasions, hiccups can cause morbidity, such as sleep deprivation, aspiration and even death. At times, palliative invasive procedures are considered. This study tested the hypothesis that invasive procedures can provide hiccup palliation with an acceptable safety profile. METHODS: Multi-site electronic medical data were used to assess adult patients who underwent an invasive procedure for hiccups between January 1995 and January 2022. Hiccup palliation was defined as documented improvement in severity or frequency of this sign/symptom after the procedure. RESULTS: A tota

Sex-biased Expression of Genes and Transposable Elements in Hybrids from Drosophila mojavensis and Drosophila arizonae.

Sex-biased gene expression is one of the main forces driving differences between sexes. Transposable elements (TEs) have also been shown to display sex-specific expression, mainly in the gonads. Despite this clear sexual dimorphism in the transcriptome, their contribution to postzygotic isolation remains poorly understood. Here, we tested whether the balance of gene and TE expression between ovaries and testes is disrupted in hybrids, potentially contributing to reproductive barriers. We analyzed Drosophila mojavensis and Drosophila arizonae, sibling species that produce sterile hybrids with d

Anesthesia in Pediatric Radiotherapy: A Systematic Literature Review by the SIOP Europe Working Group on Pediatric Anesthesia in Radiation Therapy.

Radiotherapy (RT) is essential in pediatric cancer treatment and often requires complete immobility. In younger or noncompliant children, this is typically achieved through sedation or general anesthesia (GA), which raises concerns about acute complications and potential long-term neurodevelopmental effects. Despite widespread use, standardized anesthesia protocols for pediatric RT are lacking. To support the development of practice recommendations, the SIOPE Working Group on Pediatric Anesthesia in Radiation Therapy conducted a systematic literature review. Studies from Medline and Embase wer
