The Contribution of Dietary Magnesium in Farm Animals and Human Nutrition.

Magnesium (Mg) is a mineral that plays an essential role as cofactor of more than 300 enzymes. Mg in farm animals' and human nutrition is recommended to avoid Mg deficiency, ensure adequate growth and health maintenance. Mg supplementation above the estimated minimum requirements is the best practice to improve farm animals' performances (fertility and yield) and food products' quality, since the performance of farm animals has grown in recent decades. Mg supplementation in pigs increases meat quality and sows' fertility; in poultry, it helps to avoid deficiency-related health conditions and t

Late-onset autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1: a case report and literature review.

Autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1 (APS-1), also referred to as autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED), a rare monogenic disorder, is classically characterized by a triad of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, hypoparathyroidism, and primary adrenal insufficiency. The identified causative gene is autoimmune regulator (AIRE), which encodes a critical transcription factor and is essential for self-tolerance. Here, we describe a late-onset Chinese case who presented with symptoms of persistent tetany due to hypocalcemia. Extensive clinical evaluations reveale

Rickets and gross motor delay in a child with atopic dermatitis.

We report a case of a 14-month-old boy with atopic dermatitis (AD) who presented to our hospital with hypocalcemic tetany and gross motor delay. Further laboratory and imaging confirmed the diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency and rickets. He was breastfeeding and on a restricted diet due to presumed multiple food allergies. He received calcium and vitamin D supplementation which corrected his hypocalcemia. The patient developed Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia and superficial septic thrombophlebitis for which he was treated with antibiotics and anticoagulation. An elimination diet should be avoi

[Postoperative hypocalcemia - the most common complication of endocrine head and neck surgery: acute management].

BACKGROUND: In Germany, 8000 patients are affected by postoperative hypoparathyroidism per year following surgery of the thyroid gland, parathyroidal glands and the larynx. Patients do not only suffer from paresthesia in the acute phase of this complication, but are also adversely affected by the fear of loss of control following episodes of tetany even years after the first episode. OBJECTIVES: Discussion of a diagnostic pathway and presentation of a management pathway for postoperative hypocalcemia. METHODS: Narrative review, analysis and discussion of current literature and expert recomme

Clinical and Genetic Features in 31 Serial Chinese Children With Gitelman Syndrome.

Gitelman syndrome (GS, OMIM 263800) is a genetic congenital tubulopathy associated with salt loss, which is characterized by hypokalemic metabolic toxicity, hypocalciuria, and hypomagnesemia. GS, which is typically detected in adolescence or adulthood, has long been considered a benign tubular lesion; however, the disease is associated with a significant decrease in the quality of life. In this study, we assessed the genotype-phenotype correlations based on the medical histories, clinical symptoms, laboratory test results, and whole-exome sequencing profiles from pediatric patients with GS. Be

Novel mutations in TRPM6 gene associated with primary hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia. Case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia (HSH) is a rare genetic disorder. Dysfunctional transient receptor potential melastatin 6 causes impaired intestinal absorption of magnesium, leading to low serum levels accompanied by hypocalcemia. Typical signs at initial manifestation are generalized seizures, tetany, and/or muscle spasms. CASE REPORT: We present a 5 w/o female manifesting tonic-clonic seizures. Laboratory tests detected severe hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia. The molecular genetic analysis revealed two novel mutations within the TRPM6 gene c.3308dupC (p.Pro110

A rare case of low voltage electrical injury leading to bilateral femur fractures and vertebral body fractures: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Low voltage electrical injuries (less than 1000 V) can produce enough tetany to cause fractures, usually of the upper extremities. Simultaneous bilateral fractures of the femoral neck are an extremely rare occurrence. It is even more uncommon for a young healthy male to suffer significant fractures from a low voltage injury. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old male attempted suicide by filling a bathtub with water and getting into it prior to dropping a blender into the water. He experienced full body convulsions but remained awake throughout the entire event. In the

Migraine and Its Association with Hyperactivity of Cell Membranes in the Course of Latent Magnesium Deficiency-Preliminary Study of the Importance of the Latent Tetany Presence in the Migraine Pathogenesis.

So far, there is no consistent and convincing theory explaining the pathogenesis of migraines. Vascular disorders, the effect of oxidative stress on neurons, and the contribution of magnesium-calcium deficiencies in triggering cortical depression and abnormal glutaminergic neurotransmission are taken into account. However, there are no reliable publications confirming the role of dietary deficits of magnesium and latent tetany as factors triggering migraine attacks. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of latent magnesium deficiency assessed with the electrophysiological tetany t

Hyperemesis Gravidarum With Paraparesis and Tetany.

Subacute-onset muscle weakness can result from channelopathies, inflammatory myopathies, thyroid dysfunction, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, and dyselectrolytemias like hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, and hypomagnesemia. We report a curious and extremely rare case of a 29-year-old woman with hyperemesis gravidarum presenting with disabling muscle weakness involving her lower limbs and trunk, and concurrent features of tetany. Following voluminous vomiting over the last two months, she presented with history of weakness of her lower limbs of 14 days duration, resulting in difficulty in he

Primary hyperparathyroidism in pregnancy: a case of successful parathyroidectomy in the third trimester.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in pregnancy is rare and may be associated with increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. The ideal timing for parathyroidectomy is during the second trimester, and parathyroidectomy in the third trimester is extremely rare. We present a case of a 32-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital with severe hypercalcemia in the 36th week of her first pregnancy. Conventional bilateral neck exploration was performed and parathyroid adenoma was removed. The surgical procedure was tolerated well by the mother, and she delivered a healthy girl 10 day

Impact of Permanent Post-thyroidectomy Hypoparathyroidism on Self-evaluation of Quality of Life and Voice: Results From the National QoL-Hypopara Study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the quality of life (mental health) and voice in patients with or without permanent hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Permanent hypoparathyroidism is an underestimated complication of thyroid surgery owing to suppression of parathormone secretion. Few studies have evaluated the consequences of hypoparathyroidism on quality of life and none has studied its effects on voice. METHODS: The QoL-hypopara study (ClinicalTrial.gov NCT04053647) was a national observational study. Adult thyroidectomized patients were

Low-Frequency Electrical Stimulation Promotes Satellite Cell Activities to Facilitate Muscle Regeneration at an Early Phase in a Rat Model of Muscle Strain.

The capability of regeneration for skeletal muscle after injury depends on the differentiation and proliferation ability of the resident stem cells called satellite cells. It has been reported that electrical stimulation was widely used in clinical conditions to facilitate muscle regeneration after injury, but the characterization of satellite cell responses to the context of low-frequency electrical stimulation in early-phase muscle strain conditions has not been fully clarified. In this study, we aim to investigate the effects of low-frequency electrical stimulation (frequency: 20 Hz; durati

Delayed expression of activity-dependent gating switch in synaptic AMPARs at a central synapse.

Developing central synapses exhibit robust plasticity and undergo experience-dependent remodeling. Evidently, synapses in sensory systems such as auditory brainstem circuits mature rapidly to achieve high-fidelity neurotransmission for sound localization. This depends on a developmental switch in AMPAR composition from slow-gating GluA1-dominant to fast-gating GluA4-dominant, but the mechanisms underlying this switch remain unknown. We hypothesize that patterned stimuli mimicking spontaneous/sound evoked activity in the early postnatal stage drives this gating switch. We examined activity-depe

Midbrain control of breathing and blood pressure: The role of periaqueductal gray matter and mesencephalic collicular neuronal microcircuit oscillators.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Neural circuitry residing within the medullary ventral respiratory column nuclei and dorsal respiratory group interact with the Kölliker-Fuse and medial parabrachial nuclei to generate the core breathing rhythm and pattern during resting conditions. Triphasic eupnea consists of inspiratory [I], post-inspiratory [post-I], and late-expiratory [E2] phases. Mesencephalic zones exert modulatory influences upon respiratory rhythm-generating circuitry, sympathetic oscillators, and parasympathetic nuclei. The earliest evidence supporting the existence of midbrain control of breathing derives from stud
