Extended Application of Inertial Measurement Units in Biomechanics: From Activity Recognition to Force Estimation.

Abnormal posture or movement is generally the indicator of musculoskeletal injuries or diseases. Mechanical forces dominate the injury and recovery processes of musculoskeletal tissue. Using kinematic data collected from wearable sensors (notably IMUs) as input, activity recognition and musculoskeletal force (typically represented by ground reaction force, joint force/torque, and muscle activity/force) estimation approaches based on machine learning models have demonstrated their superior accuracy. The purpose of the present study is to summarize recent achievements in the application of IMUs

Clinical Evolution of Tardive Cervical Dystonia from Antecollis to Retrocollis.

Tardive dystonia occurs after exposure, over months to years, to antipsychotics and other drugs that block dopaminergic receptors. Anterocollis is a rare form of cervical dystonia which is usually disabling for the patient. Here, we present the case of a 61-year-old woman with Alzheimer's dementia diagnosed eight years ago who was previously medicated with antipsychotics. Two years before admission, she was medicated with olanzapine. She presented to the emergency room with a sustained flexion posture of the neck that was difficult to feed. She had a marked and fixed anterocollis and severe ak

[Novel frameshift mutations in SALL4 in two Chinese families with Okihiro syndrome].

In the present study, clinical manifestations of two Chinese Okihiro syndrome families were analyzed, and genetic detections were performed on the two probands by exome sequencing and verified by Sanger sequencing for family members to determine the biological pathogenesis. Prenatal diagnoses were provided for three high-risk fetuses. The affected members exhibited a wildly spectrum of phenotypes, including ultrasound abnormalities of skeletal system (radius deformity and abnormal posture), and cardiac system (persistent common arterial trunk and ventricular septal defect) in the prenatal peri

A Causality-Driven Graph Convolutional Network for Postural Abnormality Diagnosis in Parkinsonians.

Abnormal posture is a common movement disorder in the progress of Parkinson's disease (PD), and this abnormality can increase the risk of falls or even disabilities. The conventional assessment approach depends on the judgment of well-trained experts via canonical scales. However, this approach requires extensive clinical expertise and is highly subjective. Considering the potential of quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) in PD diagnosis, this study explored the QSM-based method for the automated classification between PD patients with and without postural abnormalities. Nevertheless, a m

Abdominal Massage to Improve Motor Dysfunction in Rats with Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disease with a high disability rate and morbidity. The clinical symptoms of cerebral palsy are motor dysfunction and abnormal posture development, often accompanied by cognitive impairment. Massage, a traditional Chinese Medicine therapy, can coordinate Zang and Fu, regulate Qi and blood, make the viscera work more smoothly, and calm Yin and Yang. Furthermore, it has been an effective method for CP in clinical. This paper summarizes a set of simple and standardized manipulations of massage for young rats with CP, which is easy to follow. The procedure follows: first, m

Prompt Impact of Muscle Energy Technique on Pectoralis Muscle Tightness in Computer Users: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Tightness of the pectoralis minor muscle has been a common characteristic of abnormal posture. Prolonged inappropriate posture while using computers/laptops results in musculoskeletal problems, mainly in the upper limb. This study aims to see how the muscular energy technique affected pectoralis minor tightness in computer users right away. This study included 65 individuals aged 20-40 years following the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Participants received muscle energy technique for the pectoralis minor muscle. Pre- and post-assessment included the evaluation of pectoralis minor length, round

Analysis of the Relationship Between Muscle Tones and Abnormal Postures in a Computational Model.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder, exhibit a characteristic posture known as a forward flexed posture. Increased muscle tone is suggested as a possible cause of this abnormal posture. For further analysis, it is necessary to measure muscle tone, but the experimental measurement of muscle tone during standing is challenging. The aim of this study was to examine the hypothesis that "In patients with PD, abnormal postures are those with a small sway at increased muscle tones" using a computational model. The muscle tones of various magnitudes were estimated usin

Estimation of Spinal Muscle Performance in Work From Home Information Technology Professionals of Karad, India in 2021.

BACKGROUND: It is seen that information technology (IT) professionals are at higher risk of developing mechanical low back pain due to numerous factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, attaining inappropriate posture for a prolonged period of time, work stresses, and inadequate exercise which lead to overload on the back musculature. Working from home has become the new normal for these professionals in which they attain abnormal posture which leads to pressure on the muscles and thus there is a need to estimate and analyze spinal muscle performance among IT professionals. MATERIALS AND METHODS

[The historical diagnosis of 'hysterical scoliosis'].

BACKGROUND: Until the beginning of the 20th century, 'hysterical scoliosis' could be considered an established diagnosis in Middle Europe's German-speaking countries. The responsible physicians claimed that certain cases of scoliosis were caused solely by psychological factors, and they did not distinguish between real scoliosis (e.g. with neuromuscular cause) and abnormal posture caused by psychological reasons. Instead, 'hysterical scoliosis' was obviously believed to be a real scoliosis caused by psychologically induced contractures. OBJECTIVE: This study critically discusses the historica

Scoliotic posture and biological age measured by pubertal growth spurt in adolescent boys and girls.

Puberty is a critical period in the development of children and adolescents. The muscular dystonia observed during this period and the environmental factors present at home and school promote the adoption of abnormal posture and impaired physical performance. Early detection of postural changes provides opportunities for prevention and treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the body posture and the size of the rotational deformation of the trunk in children aged 10-15 years, before and after pubertal growth spurt. The study included 40 subjects, 19 boys and 21 girls from Wroclaw, Pola

Analysis of abnormal posture in patients with Parkinson's disease using a computational model considering muscle tones.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit distinct abnormal postures, including neck-down, stooped postures, and Pisa syndrome, collectively termed "abnormal posture" henceforth. In the previous study, when assuming an upright stance, patients with PD exhibit heightened instability in contrast to healthy individuals with disturbance, implying that abnormal postures serve as compensatory mechanisms to mitigate sway during static standing. However, limited studies have explored the relationship between abnormal posture and sway in the context of static standing. Increased muscle tone (i.e.,
