Fatigue is related to depression in idiopathic dystonia.

INTRODUCTION: Dystonia is a movement disorder presented with involuntary muscle contraction causing abnormal posture, movement, or both. Besides motor symptoms, patients may also report non-motor symptoms such as pain, anxiety, apathy, depression, sleep problems, fatigue, and cognitive impairment. The etiology of fatigue in patients with dystonia is not yet well understood. AIM: To evaluate the presence of fatigue, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and daily sleepiness in patients with focal and segmental dystonia and to determine which of these non-motor symptoms influence the occurrence

Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation in Working Dogs.

Canine sports medicine and rehabilitation recently have evolved to embody the optimization of performance, injury prevention, and mitigation of musculoskeletal degeneration. This article discusses the diverse factors and considerations of working dog wellness and injury prevention and the importance of recognizing normal and abnormal posture and anatomic structure for performance evaluation and early indication of musculoskeletal injury. The importance of a canine physical fitness program is highlighted and the need for a 4-phase recovery plan to determine if a working dog can safely return to

Sea star wasting disease pathology in Pisaster ochraceus shows a basal-to-surface process affecting color phenotypes differently.

Sea star wasting disease (SSWD) refers to a suite of poorly described non-specific clinical signs including abnormal posture, epidermal ulceration, and limb autotomy (sloughing) causing mortalities of over 20 species of sea stars and subsequent ecological shifts throughout the northeastern Pacific. While SSWD is widely assumed to be infectious, with environmental conditions facilitating disease progression, few data exist on cellular changes associated with the disease. This is unfortunate, because such observations could inform mechanisms of disease pathogenesis and host susceptibility. Here,

Improvements in physical functionality in elderly patients with spinal deformity after corrective fusion surgery: a gait analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Extensive corrective fusion surgery was performed on elderly patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD) to improve abnormal posture. Varying improvements in postoperative walking function were expected owing to differences in muscular strength and bone quality between patients in their 40s and those over 75 years of age. The purpose of this study was to compare preoperative and postoperative gait posture and physical functionality in elderly patients with ASD who underwent extensive corrective fusion to the thoracic spine. METHODS: A prospectively maintained surgical database was r

Ultrasound Measurement of the Transverse Abdominis, Internal Oblique, and External Oblique Muscles Associated with Forward Head Posture and Reduced Cranio-Vertebral Angle.

BACKGROUND Abnormal posture can affect the alignment of the cervical spine, which can lead to various physical problems. There are many ways to solve the problem by limiting the area around the neck to restore abnormal neck condition. However, there is a need to look at these problems from an enlarged perspective through the relationship between the cervical spine and trunk. This study aimed to investigate the significance of the thickness of the transverse abdominis, internal oblique, and external oblique muscles in patients with forward head posture and reduced cranio-vertebral angle. Standardized experimental model for cement dust exposure; tissue heavy metal bioaccumulation and pulmonary pathological changes in rats.

A controlled experimental model of exposure to aerosols particularly for cement dust was recently invented in a study from the laboratory that found high serum levels of heavy metals, decrease gastrointestinal motility, and altered hematological variables in cement dust exposed rats. However, reproducibility was not considered. This work aims at standardizing the model and investigating preliminary toxicological indicators. Thirty male rats used in this study were divided into 3 groups (n = 10). Group 1; control, while groups 2 and 3 were exposed to cement dust for 14 days and 28 days respecti

Oral Health Disorders in Parkinson's Disease: More than Meets the Eye.

Despite clinical evidence of poor oral health and hygiene in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, the mouth is often overlooked by both patients and the medical community, who generally focus on motor or psychiatric disorders considered more burdensome. Yet, oral health is in a two-way relationship with overall health-a weakened status triggering a decline in the quality of life. Here, we aim at giving a comprehensive overview of oral health disorders in PD, while identifying their etiologies and consequences. The physical (abnormal posture, muscle tone, tremor, and dyskinesia), behavioral (cogn

Hemidystonia after Pontine Hemorrhage Successfully Treated with Pharmacotherapy and Intensive Rehabilitation: a Case Report.

Dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary contraction of muscles resulting in repetitive or twisting movements. Dystonia is generally caused by basal ganglia dysfunction. Recent studies have reported an association between dystonia and brainstem disorders. However, the pathological mechanism is uncertain, and detailed management strategies are limited. Here, we report a case of hemidystonia with abnormal posture and impaired proprioception after pontine hemorrhage that was effectively treated with pharmacotherapy combined with early intensive comprehensive rehabilitation. Case Report: Recurrent Variant c.298 TA in CCN6 Gene Found in Progressive Pseudorheumatoid Dysplasia Patients From Patni Community of Gujarat: A Report of Three Cases.

Biallelic mutations in the CCN6 gene are known to cause a rare genetic disorder-progressive pseudorheumatoid dysplasia (PPD). PPD is characterized by distinct joint deformities of interphalangeal joints, stiffness, gait disturbance, abnormal posture, and absence of inflammation, resulting in significant morbidity. The largest case series of PPD from India suggests c.233G>A and c.1010G>A to be the most common mutations in the CCN6 gene, although the distribution of these variants among endogamous communities in India has not been carried out. We here report three cases of PPD from three indepen

Effects of Robot-Aided Rehabilitation on the Ankle Joint Properties and Balance Function in Stroke Survivors: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Stroke survivors with impaired control of the ankle due to stiff plantarflexors often experience abnormal posture control, which affects balance and locomotion. Forceful stretching may decrease ankle stiffness and improve balance. Recently, a robot-aided stretching device was developed to decrease ankle stiffness of patient post-stroke, however, their benefits compared to manual stretching exercises have not been done in a randomized controlled trial, and the correlations between the ankle joint biomechanical properties and balance are unclear. Objective: To compare the effects of

Postural and gait abnormalities in a group of Romney lambs due to pain induced by severe chronic cutaneous dermatophilosis.

CASE HISTORY: Fifteen lambs from a flock of 1,000, 5-month-old Romney lambs in the Manawatū region of New Zealand, developed unusual postural and gait abnormalities during the summer of 2020. In mid-January, the lambs were grazing a raphanobrassica crop (xRaphanobrassica; Brassica oleracea x Raphanus sativus) but were removed from this crop soon after as they developed dermal lesions on the pinnae consistent with photosensitisation (colloquially known as "rape scald"). The lambs were placed onto a shaded paddock containing a pasture of predominantly perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and whit

Spinal Surgery after Bilateral Subthalamic Stimulation for Patients with Parkinson's Disease: A Retrospective Outcome Analysis of Pain and Functional Control.

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients often suffer from spinal diseases requiring surgeries, although the risk of complications is high. There are few reports on outcomes after spinal surgery for PD patients with deep brain stimulation (DBS). The objective of this study was to explore the data on spinal surgery for PD patients with precedent DBS. We evaluated 24 consecutive PD patients with 28 spinal surgeries from 2007 to 2017 who received at least a 2-year follow-up. The characteristics and outcomes of PD patients after spinal surgery were compared to those of 156 non-PD patients with degenerati

Relationships between forward head posture and lumbopelvic sagittal alignment in older adults with chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal posture creates abnormal stress and strain in many spinal structures which are considered predisposing factors for chronic mechanical low back pain. PURPOSE: To examine the relationships among pain intensity, forward head posture (decreased craniovertebral angle) and lumbopelvic sagittal alignment (pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt, sacral slope, and lumbar lordosis) in chronic mechanical low back pain patients. METHODS: A cross-section correlational study was conducted on one hundred patients. A numerical-pain-rating scale was used to determine pain intensity. Standardized

Safety evaluation of FM101, an A3 adenosine receptor modulator, in rat, for developing as therapeutics of glaucoma and hepatitis.

Adenosine is a critical regulator of inflammation and fibrosis, it affects endogenous cell signaling via binding to the A3 adenosine receptor. FM101 is a potent, highly selective A3 adenosine receptor modulator that has been developed as a treatment for glaucoma and hepatitis. We determined that FM101 is a biased ligand with functional activities both as a G protein agonist and a β-arrestin antagonist. The safety of FM101 was evaluated by administering an acute dose in rats, the results indicated that the approximate lethal dose was greater than 2000 mg/kg. In a subchronic toxicity study, FM10
