Objective: Forward head posture (FHP) is a common abnormal posture in neck disorders. FHP causes an alteration of the strength in the cervical muscles. Since both muscle quantity and quality impress the muscle strength, this study aimed to compare the echo intensity of cervical muscles (index of muscle quality) between women with and without FHP.Method: Echo intensity of cervical muscles was measured by Adobe Photoshop software and compared between two groups. Results: The findings of the current study indicate the insignificant difference between two groups regarding the echo intensity of cerv

Brachycephaly has several potential deleterious effects, including malocclusion, sleep apnea, and abnormal posture. Nevertheless, the research regarding helmet therapy as a treatment strategy for brachycephaly is limited. Herein, we aimed to analyze the factors influencing the effects of helmet therapy in infants with brachycephaly. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 207 infants aged 3-14 months with a cranial index (CI) >90% who received helmet therapy between May 2016 and October 2019 and complied with the treatment protocol well. We used a multiple regression analysis to determine w

BACKGROUND: Leg length discrepancy (LLD) can cause abnormal posture, muscle and/or joint pains, which leads to walking difficulties. The common treatment is to use a shoe lift on the shorter leg side, but this has unsatisfying results.
OBJECTIVE: Through research and development, we created 3D printing orthotic insoles for LLD patients and aimed to improve their symptoms.
METHODS: 1. Research and development of 3D printing orthotic insole: (1) foot scan and data acquisition; (2) insole software modeling; (3) 3D printing insole using TPU materials, and (4) post-processing. 2.

Pusher behavior (PB) is a severe lateral postural disorder that involves a disturbed subjective postural vertical (SPV) in the frontal plane. SPV is measured by determining the mean value and standard deviation of several trials beginning on both the contralesional- and ipsilesional-tilted positions. However, the postural representation, when passively tilted to the contralesional versus ipsilesional position, is different between patients with and without PB. Therefore, we hypothesized that SPV dependence on the starting position will be influenced by PB. For 53 patients with hemispheric stro

Balance control is accomplished by the anatomical link which provides the neural information for the coordination of skeletal muscles. However, there are few experimental proofs to directly show the neuroanatomical connection. Here, we examined the behavioral alterations by constructing an animal model with chemically induced unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL). In the experiment using rats (26 for UL, 14 for volume cavity, 355-498 g, male), the models were initially evaluated by the rota-rod (RR) test (21/26, 80.8%) and ocular displacement (23/26, 88.5%). The duration on the rolling rod decreased

The classification of abnormal posture and the assessment of the affected muscles in cervical dystonia (CD) have changed in recent years. To determine the frequency of injected muscles, we studied 306 patients with CD. The mean age was 55.5 ± 13.1 years (range 21-90), 67% were female. Splenius capitis was the most commonly injected muscle (83%), followed by sternocleidomastoid (79.1%), and trapezius muscles (58.5%). The three next most common were the levator scapulae, semispinalis capitis, and obliquus capitis inferior muscles. The study shows that the most commonly injected muscles have rema

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterised by sustained or intermittent muscle contractions, producing abnormal and often repetitive movements, abnormal posture or both. It is often accompanied by chronic pain, depression and anxiety. The treatment of dystonia is primarily symptomatic, designed to improve posture and function and to relieve associated pain. This can include oral medications, botulinum toxin (BoNT) injection, and deep brain stimulation (DBS). This article will focus on BoNT treatment, which is just one facet in the treatment of cervical dystonia. The involvement

BACKGROUND Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a human prion disease characterized by severe and rapidly progressive fatal neurodegeneration. Currently, there is no cure for CJD, and death from CJD usually occurs within 1 year from the onset of the symptom, and the median survival time is 6 months. CASE REPORT The patient was a 63-year-old woman who presented to the hospital reporting having vertigo for the past 1 week and involuntary muscle contraction resulting in slow repetitive movement and abnormal posture for the past 3 days. A physical examination at the time of admission revealed unstea

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the elderly, which is clinically characterized by bradykinesia, resting tremor, abnormal posture balance, and hypermyotonia. Currently, the pathogenic mechanism of PD remains unclear. Numerous clinical studies as well as animal and cell experiments have found a certain relationship between the vitamin family and PD. The antioxidant properties of vitamins and their biological functions of regulating gene expression may be beneficial for the treatment of PD. Current clinical evidence indicates that proper supplementa

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe the reliability and validity of measurements of cervical retraction strength obtained with a hand held dynamometer (HHD) from healthy adults. Background: Impaired neck muscle strength is related to neck pain, abnormal posture, and various cervical pathologies. While sophisticated devices to objectively measure neck strength exist, many are not practicable in typical orthopedic practices or have questionable validity and reliability. Methods: Forty participants were included in the analysis of neck strength using isometric testing with an HH

BACKGROUND: Postural abnormalities in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and unimpaired elderly are not well differentiated. Factors related to postural abnormality associated with PD are controversial.
OBJECTIVE: We assessed differences in postural change between PD patients and unimpaired elderly and elucidated factors related to abnormal posture in PD patients.
METHODS: We measured the dropped head angle (DHA), anterior flexion angle (AFA), and lateral flexion angle (LFA) of the thoracolumbar spine of an unprecedented 1,117 PD patients and 2,732 general population participants (GPPs) using

Background: Pisa syndrome (PS) is a lateral flexion of the trunk frequently associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). The pathophysiology of PS remains unclear, but the role of cognitive deficits has been postulated. Methods: We included 12 consecutive PD patients with PS (PS+) and 12 PD patients without PS (PS-) matched for gender, age, level of education, PD duration, and PD stage. As primary aim, we compared the neuropsychological scores of 16 tests evaluating 6 cognitive domains between PS+ and PS-. Additionally, we evaluated the presence of misperception of the trunk position in PS+, defi

BACKGROUND Unbalanced standing and gait asymmetry are common in individuals with musculoskeletal disorders. Achieving symmetrical posture and gait is an important goal of rehabilitation. This study investigated the biomechanical differences in the lower extremities observed immediately after an insole was used and without the use of different one-sided insoles. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty young, healthy adult males received 3 different insole interventions: experimental group A had a customized 3-dimensional (3D)-printed single-sided lateral wedge insole (CLWI) inserted on the left side, and e

INTRODUCTION: In the current edition, Szejko and colleagues describe a subset of patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) who had dystonic tics (DTs), which occurred more frequently in those with a greater number of tics and likely contribute to impairment. Clinical Reflections: DTs manifest as an abnormal posture that may be difficult to distinguish from other movements, such as dystonia and other tic types. Electromyography is an invaluable tool that can aid clinicians in making this important distinction.
CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Accurately diagnosing these movements can significan

The aim of this study was to investigate the causal role of an early serotonin injury on parkinsonian-like motor symptomatology. Monkeys were pretreated with 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methamphetamine (MDMA, or "ecstasy"), known to lesion serotonergic fibers, before being administered 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). We combined behavioural assessment, PET imaging, and immunohistochemistry. Strikingly, prior MDMA administration aggravated MPTP-induced Parkinsonism and associated dopaminergic injury. Monkeys with early MDMA lesions developed parkinsonian deficits more rapidly and

In this paper, through the research of digital twin technology, combined with the application of vision sensor, artificial intelligence chip and deep learning algorithm technology, the real-time monitoring and alarm system of elderly fall and abnormal posture based on digital twin technology is developed. The system collects the data of the posture and behavior of the elderly, and then presents them in the cloud by digital mapping after the calculation and analysis of artificial intelligence chip. Once the safety threshold is deviated, the alarm can be activated to avoid or mitigate the injury

A 2-year-old male domestic shorthair cat was presented for a progressive history of abnormal posture, behavior, and mentation. Menace response was absent bilaterally, and generalized tremors were identified on neurological examination. A neuroanatomical diagnosis of diffuse brain dysfunction was made. A neurodegenerative disorder was suspected. Magnetic resonance imaging findings further supported the clinical suspicion. Whole-genome sequencing of the affected cat with filtering of variants against a database of unaffected cats was performed. Candidate variants were confirmed by Sanger sequenc
