Normal term newborn infants have been studied during the first four hours after birth. Cord blood and brachial venous blood samples were collected for measurement of serum prolactin (n = 15; 11 vaginal delivery; four cesarean section delivery), thyrotropin (n=8), growth hormone (n=7), tri-iodothyronine (n=7) and thyroxine (n=7). The mean cord serum TSH concentration was 12 +/- 2 muU/ml and peaked in all infants 30 minutes after birth (67 +/- 7 muU/ml). Testosterone was measured by radio-immunoassay in the blood plasma collected from 197 and 195 Holstein bulls in the spring and fall seasons, respectively. Bulls ranged in age from 8 mo to 13.5 yr. The average value for spring was 8.0 ng/ml, higher than the value of 5.7 ng/ml in the fall. Also, there was a tendency for testosterone to increase with age of the bulls up to 6 to 7 yr. The concentration of circulating testosterone was unrelated to libido or semen quality.

Althesin anaesthesia alone had no significant effect on plasma cortisol concentration. When Althesin induction was followed by maintenance with N2O and halothane there was a statistically insignificant fall, but with N2O, pancuronium and I.P.P.V there was a tendency for plasma cortisol concentrations to rise. This, too, was statistically not significant. A significant elevation in the mean plasma cortisol concentration was only found in patients during abdominal surgery.

The physical and mental reactions were registered before and after smoking 2 g hashish in 30 volunteers who had never smoked hashish before. The EEG shows no pathological changes. Hashish significantly raises the heart rate. The blood pressure shows a tendency to fall. The cardiovascular disturbances may be so marked that collapse occurs. The reaction of fear after acute hashish intoxication may lead to unpleasant defense reactions. Hashish implies a danger to road traffic because of the physical ataxia and alterations in appreciation of time and space.

Changes in serum LH, FSH and prolactin were measured by radioimmunoassay following injection of synthetic LH-RH into the anterior pituitary and median eminence of rats.
