A possible relationship between exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) and bronchial sensitivity to the cholinergic drug, metacholine, was studied. On the same day, 57 asthmatic subjects inhaled increasing concentrations of the drug and were then tested for EIB by exercising to exhaustion. A fall in peak expiratory flow rate of 15% or more was considered a positive reaction to either test. A modification of the microdissection technique of Hanssen was utilized in dogs to measure superficial (SNGFR) and juxtamedullary nephron filtration rate (JMGFR) in control and saline-expanded dogs. During control studies SNGFR was 60+/-4 and JMGFR was 72+/-5 nl/min. During saline loading SNGFR was 74+/-8 and JMGFR was 65+/-6 nl/min. A trial of the effects of measures designed to reduce exposure to house-dust mites was performed on 14 children with mite-sensitive asthma. These measures reduced mite infestation of the beds and were associated with clinical improvement of asthmatic symptoms. Immunological studies revealed a tendency for levels of total serum IgE to fall during the course of the trial, but no such changes were apparent in the levels of anti-mite specific serum IgE. Peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) were measured before and after 6 minutes' exercise in 12-year-old schoolchildren living in two areas. The indirect immunofluorescent technique has been used to study the specific immunoglobulin responses in twelve adult cases of acute uncomplicated rubella. Gastro-oesophageal sphincter pressure and intraoesophageal pH has been studied in 25 chronic smokers who complained of heartburn. Smoking a cigarette invariably caused a fall in sphincter pressure, and pH measurements showed an increased tendency for reflux to occur while smoking. When lower oesophageal pH was measured overnight one-third of all reflux episodes occurred while the patients were smoking, and reflux was seen during the smoking of two-thirds of all the cigarettes consumed. It is concluded that cigarette smoking is a common reversible cause of gastro-oesophageal reflux.

Immunological investigations of 37 patients with bagassosis, 92 unaffected bagasse workers, and 150 non-exposed controls showed that precipitins against extracts of bagasse could be demonstrated just as frequently in the unaffected and the non-exposed as in the affected.
