CHANGES IN SERUM AND URINARY POTASSIUM LEVELS DURING PROFOUND HYPOTHERMIA IN MAN.

Samples of blood were taken at five to 10-minute intervals during cooling, circulatory arrest, and rewarming in eight consecutive patients undergoing open cardiac surgery under profound hypothermia at nasopharyngeal and oesophageal temperatures of approximately 10 degrees C. and the serum potassium levels were estimated. Urine samples were also collected from six of the eight patients and the total potassium excretion calculated per minute. It was found that there was a tendency for the serum potassium level to rise towards the end of cooling. A further more significant rise occurred during ci

Cis-trans isomers of vitamin A and retinene in the rhodopsin system.

Vitamin A and retinene, the carotenoid precursors of rhodopsin, occur in a variety of molecular shapes, cis-trans isomers of one another. For the synthesis of rhodopsin a specific cis isomer of vitamin A is needed. Ordinary crystalline vitamin A, as also the commercial synthetic product, both primarily all-trans, are ineffective. The main site of isomer specificity is the coupling of retinene with opsin. It is this reaction that requires a specific cis isomer of retinene. The oxidation of vitamin A to retinene by the alcohol dehydrogenase-cozymase system displays only a low degree of isomer sp

THE CHANGES IN RAT KIDNEY COCARBOXYLASE ASSOCIATED WITH THE INJURIOUS EFFECTS OF dl-SERINE.

When rats on either a stock or a vitamin B deficient diet are given the amino acid dl-serine by stomach tube, there is a fall in the cocarboxylase concentration of the kidney. This organ exhibits marked damage. There is, also, a lessened tendency for cocarboxylase to disappear from the tissue homogenate upon anaerobic incubation in vitro. In animals on the stock diet, only, there is a recovery of the normal cocarboxylase level. The probable relation of these findings to the mechanism of the production of the injurious action of serine is discussed. We would like to acknowledge the helpful crit

THE STATE OF THE VESSELS OF THE MESENTERY IN SHOCK PRODUCED BY CONSTRICTING THE LIMBS AND THE BEHAVIOR OF THE VESSELS FOLLOWING HEMORRHAGE.

1. Direct observations of the arteries, arterioles, capillaries, veins, and lymphatics in the mesentery of anesthetized cats put into shock by incomplete occlusion of the circulation of the limbs showed that: (a) Marked constriction of the arteries and arterioles, produced by muscular contraction, occurred usually within an hour after incomplete occlusion of the limbs, lasted several hours, and finally gave way in most instances to relaxation an hour or more before death. The constriction reduced the blood supply to the mesentery and intestine and the venous return from them. It did not, howev

STUDIES ON EXPERIMENTAL HYPERTENSION : IX. THE EFFECT ON BLOOD PRESSURE OF CONSTRICTION OF THE ABDOMINAL AORTA ABOVE AND BELOW THE SITE OF ORIGIN OF BOTH MAIN RENAL ARTERIES.

Constriction of the aorta just above the origin of both main renal arteries invariably resulted in elevation of the carotid systolic and carotid mean pressure. The hypertension was not immediate, but developed in about the same time as after constriction of the main renal arteries (3). Constriction of the aorta just below the origin of both main renal arteries had no significant effect on the carotid systolic or carotid mean pressure. Since these results were first reported (1), Rytand (88, 89) has shown by an indirect method, namely, the demonstration of the development of cardiac hypertrophy

BLOOD PLASMA PROTEIN REGENERATION AS INFLUENCED BY INFECTION, DIGESTIVE DISTURBANCES, THYROID, AND FOOD PROTEINS : A DEFICIENCY STATE RELATED TO PROTEIN DEPLETION.

When blood plasma proteins are depleted by bleeding, with return of washed red cells (plasmapheresis), it is possible to bring dogs to a steady state of low plasma protein in the circulation and a uniform plasma protein production on a basal diet. Such dogs become test subjects by which the effect of various factors on plasma protein regeneration can be measured. Dogs previously the subjects of plasmapheresis, during long rest periods appear to increase their stores of plasma protein building materials and their blood plasma protein concentrations above former normal levels. Anæsthesia in Gynæcology: (Section of Anæsthetics).

The operations of gynaecology are divided into two classes: (1) Minor: including perineal repairs, colporrhaphies, vaginal hysterectomies, dilatations and curettings, etc., and (2) Major: abdominal sections. For both groups routine premedication is a combination of morphia and nembutal, the former in (1/6)-grain, and the latter in 3-grain doses. For Group 1 three methods of anaesthesia are described: (a) Ethylene and oxygen, producing in nearly all cases an adequate depth of anaesthesia without the addition of ether. A safe type of anaesthesia and one from which recovery takes place quickly. (b

THE DEFORMABILITY AND THE WETTING PROPERTIES OF LEUCOCYTES AND ERYTHROCYTES.

The resistance to deformation of polymorphonuclear neutrophile leucocytes under the conditions of our observations has been shown to be on the average considerably less than the resistance to deformation of large mononuclear leucocytes. It is recognized of course that the viscosity of leucocytes, as of other cells, may be markedly influenced by osmotic conditions (17), by the reaction of the suspending medium (18, 19), by temperature, or by injury (20, 21). Although the conditions of our observations were quite different from those of the body, they were nevertheless closely similar to those o

STUDIES IN THE BLOOD CYTOLOGY OF THE RABBIT : V. CONSECUTIVE LYMPHOCYTE AND MONOCYTE OBSERVATIONS ON GROUPS OF NORMAL RABBITS.

Consecutive weekly observations on the lymphocyte and monocyte counts of the peripheral blood were made on 5 groups of normal rabbits, a total of 45 animals, during a period of 20 months from October, 1927 to July, 1929. Individual groups were examined 8 to 35 weeks. The results are analyzed on the basis of the mean group values of each week. In the case of the 4 groups followed 13 to 35 weeks, there was a general tendency for the lymphocyte mean values to become increased; with the group observed 8 weeks, the level of mean values showed little change. The general trend of the monocyte mean va

BACTERIOLOGY OF THE BLOOD AND JOINTS IN RHEUMATIC FEVER.

1. During the Spring of 1928, 29 patients with acute rheumatic fever were subjected to blood cultures, of whom 9, or 31 per cent, yielded a streptococcus. During the Spring of 1929, 31 patients with acute rheumatic fever were studied by blood cultures, of whom 26, or 83.9 per cent, yielded a streptococcus. The higher percentage of positive cultures in the 1929 series appears to have been due to improved cultural methods. 2. Of the 35 strains of streptococci recovered from blood cultures, 33 have been classified as alpha streptococci (Str. viridans); one as a beta streptococcus (Str. hemolyticu

LOCAL PROGRESSION WITH SPONTANEOUS REGRESSION OF TUBERCULOSIS IN THE BONE MARROW OF RABBITS, CORRELATED WITH A TRANSITORY ANEMIA AND LEUCOPENIA AFTER INTRAVENOUS INOCULATION.

In this series of rabbits it was found that the rabbits dying during the 1st month after an injection of I or 2 mg. of bovine tubercle bacilli show the same conditions: extreme tuberculosis of the lungs, acute splenic tumor with tuberculosis, involvement of the lymph glands, an occasional small tubercle in the liver and extensive tuberculosis of the bone marrow. The peripheral blood has shown a sharp fall in the platelet count, an anemia and a fall in the granulocytic strain of white cells, and these changes have been correlated with the condition of the bone marrow. There has also been a rise

THE BICARBONATE RESERVE AND THE DISSOCIATION CURVE OF OXYHEMOGLOBIN IN FEBRILE CONDITIONS.

From Fig. 1 it may be seen that the effect of elevated temperature during the pyrexial period upon 1/K and therefore on the dissociation curve of oxyhemoglobin was, on the average, greater than would have been expected from experiments on normal blood in vitro, and greater than would be expected in view of the alkalosis occurring See PDF for Structure during fever. Temperature rise, and excess hydroxyl ion acting in vitro in the opposite directions, seemed to indicate a more stable state of affairs than was found. Apparently other factors have come into play, as, for example, alterations in th

ELECTROPHORESIS OF BACTERIA AS INFLUENCED BY HYDROGEN ION CONCENTRATION AND THE PRESENCE OF SODIUM AND CALCIUM SALTS.

1. We have confirmed the results of earlier workers particularly of Northrop and De Kruif in regard to the following points: (a) the general tendency of the bacterial cell when suspended in distilled water near the zone of neutrality to move toward the anode of an electrical field; (b) the fact that the migration of bacterial cells in the electrical field is a function of the reaction of the menstruum. The curve obtained by plotting velocity of migration against pH passes through an isoelectric point at about pH 3.0, at greater acidity the direction of migration becomes reversed (toward the ca

EXPERIMENTAL EPIDEMIOLOGY : II. EFFECT OF THE ADDITION OF HEALTHY MICE TO A POPULATION SUFFERING FROM MOUSE TYPHOID.

1. A kind of mouse village was set up into which was introduced a small number of mice fed on a culture of so called mouse typhoid (Bacillus pestis cavice of the Bacillus paratyphosus B group) bacillus. The spread of the infection so induced to the cages, or "homes," of the other mice was left to accident through the attendant who fed the animals and cleaned the cages. That this means was likely to be sufficient was deduced from the epidemic reported by Lynch. A spot map was kept throughout the experiments which extended from 1919 into 1922. 2. The first effect of the exposure of normal mice t

THE RELATION OF THE SPLEEN TO BLOOD DESTRUCTION AND REGENERATION AND TO HEMOLYTIC JAUNDICE : XV. THE RESISTANCE TO HEMOLYTIC AGENTS OF DOGS IN WHICH THE SPLENIC BLOOD HAS BEEN DIVERTED FROM THE LIVER.

1. Dogs whose splenic veins or portal vein (Eck fistula) have been transplanted into the inferior vena cava, or whose splenic veins have been ligated, show a lessened tendency to jaundice similar to that exhibited by splenectomized animals. 2. Although the previously existing anemia and the concomitant increased resistance of the red cells of these animals are undoubtedly factors in the greater resistance to hemolytic agents, the lessened tendency to jaundice is, in part at least, due to a mechanical factor dependent on the course of the blood supply to the liver. 3. The additional anemia caus

THE REACTIONS BETWEEN BACTERIA AND ANIMAL TISSUES UNDER CONDITIONS OF ARTIFICIAL CULTIVATION.

This report gives an outline of the results of observations on over 1,100 tissue cultures made during the fall, winter, and spring of 1913 to 1914. The work has been resumed in the fall of 1914 and will be continued along the same and allied lines, confirming the above results with other strains of the same organisms and with other bacteria and bacterial products. Tests should be made with tissue and plasma from other animals, and the known pathogenicity of the organism for the animal and tissue used should always be borne in mind. We hope to be able to grow on these cultures some of the more

VARIETIES OF PNEUMOCOCCUS AND THEIR RELATION TO LOBAR PNEUMONIA.

A study of pneumococci isolated from individuals suffering from lobar pneumonia has shown that the majority of these organisms fall into definite biological groups. These groups have been arbitrarily numbered from I to IV. The first three groups consist of organisms which within the group are closely related to each other by certain immunological reactions; i. e., protection and agglutination. Extensive study has failed to reveal crossing in either of these reactions between members of separate groups. The fourth group is formed of a series of independent varieties which cannot be definitely r

HIBERNATION AND THE PITUITARY BODY.

A train of symptoms, coupled with retardation of tissue metabolism and with inactivity of the reproductive glands, not only accompanies states of experimentally induced hypophysial deficiency, but is equally characteristic of clinical states of hypopituitarism. The more notable of these symptoms are a tendency, in the chronic cases, toward an unusual deposition of fat, a lowering of body temperature, slowing of pulse and respiration, fall in blood pressure, and oftentimes a pronounced somnolence. These symptoms bear a marked resemblance to the physiological phenomena accompanying the state of

THE TOTAL NON-PROTEIN NITROGEN OF THE BLOOD IN NEPHRITIS AND ALLIED CONDITIONS.

1. In a series of non-nephritic individuals the total non-protein nitrogen of the blood, determined by Folin's method, was found to lie between 15 and 43 milligrams per 100 cubic centimeters. From 50 to 60 per cent. of this was in the ammonia-urea fraction. 2. In cardiovascular disease with renal congestion, but without other renal lesion, there was no evidence of increase of non-protein nitrogen in the blood, nor of alteration of the ammonia-urea percentage. 3. In chronic nephritis with marked albuminuria and edema there was very little, if any, increase or alteration. 4. In chronic nephritis
