The seroprevalence of Taenia solium cysticercosis among epileptic patients in León, Nicaragua, as evaluated by ELISA and western blotting.

The Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis complex is an important public-health problem in several countries, where many epileptic seizures appear to be associated with neurocysticercosis. As few data on this problem in Nicaragua exist, the seroprevalence of antibodies reacting with antigens from T. solium cysticerci was investigated among 88 Nicaraguan epileptics (45 males and 43 females, aged 6-53 years). In questionnaire-based interviews, each adult subject and a caregiver of each child investigated were asked about potential risk factors for taeniasis/cysticercosis. When a serum sample fro

Vaccination of pigs to control human neurocysticercosis.

Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is a zoonotic disease complex in which the pig is an obligate intermediate host. The infection is widespread, particularly in the developing world, and neurocysticercosis is a major cause of human neurologic disease where the parasite is endemic. Despite easy availability, effective anti-parasitic drugs have not been deployed effectively to control disease transmission. We have investigated a vaccine strategy to prevent parasite infection of the pig intermediate host. Such a strategy would interrupt the parasite's life cycle and eliminate the source of inf

Control of Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis: from research towards implementation.

Theoretically, considering the biology of its transmission and reservoirs, global eradication of Taenia solium taeniasis and cysticercosis is feasible. Recently much progress has been made in research on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human taeniasis and porcine cysticercosis, although more operational research is still needed. In spite of this, global eradication of T. solium infection is still unlikely in the near future. Major obstacles to practical implementation of control measures include low levels of sanitation and health education amongst endemic populations, ineffective healt

Taeniasis and cysticercosis in housemaids working in affluent neighborhoods in Lima, Peru.

Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is endemic in most developing countries, where it is an important cause of epileptic seizures and other neurologic symptoms. In industrialized countries, cysticercosis results from travel or immigration of tapeworm carriers from endemic areas. In both endemic and nonendemic countries, housemaids commonly immigrate from cysticercosis-endemic areas and can transmit the infection if they carry the adult tapeworm. Between July 2001 and July 2002, 1,178 housemaids (961 of them work in the top five most affluent districts of Lima, a metropolis of 8 million inhab

Short report: secondary transmission in porcine cysticercosis: description and their potential implications for control sustainability.

Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is one of few potentially eradicable infectious diseases and is the target of control programs in several countries. The larval stage of this zoonotic cestode invades the human brain and is responsible for most cases of adult-onset epilepsy in the world. The pig is the natural intermediate host, harboring the larvae or cysticerci. Our current understanding of the life cycle implicates humans as the only definitive host and tapeworm carrier (developing taeniasis) and thus the sole source of infective eggs that are responsible for cysticercosis in both human

[Cognitive disorders in an Andean community located in a cysticercosis endemic zone of Ecuador].

Mini mental state tests (MMS) were administered to 227 adults over the age of 40 years living in an Ecuadorian urban Andean community known to be an endemic zone for Taenia solium taeniasis and cysticercosis. The overall prevalence of cognitive impairment was 8.4% (19/227). The prevalence of cognitive impairment was 23.5% (8 cases) in adults over 75 years (n=34). The Hachinski ischemic score for vascular dementia was abnormal in 4 of the 19 adults (21%) exhibiting cognitive impairment. This survey highlighted a high prevalence of dementia in comparison with industrialised countries. Parasitic

Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis in Papua, Indonesia in 2001: detection of human worm carriers.

A preliminary study to detect human worm carriers of Taenia solium in Papua (Irian Jaya), Indonesia was carried out using stool examinations for the detection of copro-antigens and adult proglottids after chemotherapy, and confirmation by mitochondrial DNA analysis using expelled proglottids and metacestodes developed in NOD/Shi-scid mice from eggs of expelled proglottids. Approximately 8.6% of the local population in Kama (5/58), 1 km from the local capital city centre, Wamena, were confirmed to harbour adult T. solium using these techniques.

Diagnosis, treatment and control of Taenia solium cysticercosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is now recognized as a major public health problem in most developing countries because of its association with seizures. Major advances in the diagnosis and epidemiology of taeniasis/cysticercosis have occurred in recent years. However, despite abundant literature on the subject, many questions remain unanswered including the role of anti-parasitic therapy and the potential for long-term control or elimination of the disease in field conditions following active interventions. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent advances have included improved know

PCR tools for the differential diagnosis of Taenia saginata and Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis from different geographical locations.

The potential value of PCRs in the species-specific diagnosis of have been investigated, using samples of T. saginata and T. solium from different geographical areas. The PCRs examining inter-species differences were based on the sequence of the HDP2 DNA fragment, specific for T. saginata/T. solium, and the sequence of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer 1 and spacer 2 (ITS-1 and ITS-2). This PCR analysis of DNA isolates confirmed morphologic diagnosis and allowed the speciation of samples too small or fragmented for morphologic identification, with clear and consistent inter-species differen

The present study was carried out between August 1999 and April 2000 with the objective of determining the prevalence of Taenia solium taeniasis in two village communities of Bafou and Bamendou in the Menoua division (West Cameroon). Four (0.13%) out of 3,109 faecal samples were positive for Taenia spp. eggs using the flotation technique. Three of the four worms expelled were T. solium whereas the other one was T. saginata. Two cases of cysticercosis were diagnosed in one of the families with a T. solium carrier. Furthermore, coprological and serological investigations for T. solium taeniasis

Development of a serologic assay to detect Taenia solium taeniasis.

We developed a serologic assay to identify adult Taenia solium tapeworm carriers using excretory/secretory (TSES) antigens collected from in vitro cultured T. solium tapeworms. To identify taeniasis-specific antigens we used an immunoblot assay with serum samples from T. solium tapeworm carriers and cysticercosis patients. Antigens were identified that reacted with antibodies present in serum samples from taeniasis cases and not with those from cysticercosis patients. Using serum samples collected from persons with confirmed T. solium tapeworm infections, the test was determined to be 95% (69

Epidemiological study of Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis in a rural village in Yucatan state, Mexico.

A survey to detect human taeniasis and cysticercosis was conducted in a community in Yucatan state, Mexico, an area endemic for Taenia solium. Information on the environmental, demographic and risk factors associated with transmission of T. solium within the community was recorded on questionnaires. Although no Taenia eggs or proglottides were found in the initial faecal samples collected from each of the 475 subjects, the results of a capture-ELISA for T. solium coproantigen were positive for 10 of the subjects (of both genders and various ages). After treatment with niclosamide, proglottides

A population-based, case-control study of Taenia solium taeniasis and cysticercosis.

A two-phase study was conducted in a rural community in Honduras, to evaluate the association between neurocysticercosis (NCC) diagnosed by computed tomography (CT), epilepsy, seropositivity for antibodies to the cysticerci of Taenia solium [determined by enzyme-linked-immunoelectrotransfer-blot (EITB) assays], intestinal infection with this parasite, and various epidemiological factors. Of the 480 individuals studied in the first phase, 17% were seropositive and 2.5% supplied faecal samples which contained T. solium eggs. In the second phase, 148 individuals (74 of the seropositive subjects f

Field trial of the coproantigen-based diagnosis of Taenia solium taeniasis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

A microplate-type enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of Taenia species antigen in human feces was tested in field studies undertaken in two Guatemalan communities. The test was based on immunoglobulin G antibodies from a rabbit hyperimmunized to Taenia solium proglottides. Comparison was made with microscopy and patient interviews as a means of diagnosis. The coproantigen test result was positive in 79 of the 1,582 fecal samples examined. Parasitologic confirmation was made in 55 of these cases. The coproantigen test was the most sensitive technique used, detecting 2.6 times a

Epidemiology of Taenia solium taeniasis and cysticercosis in two rural Guatemalan communities.

Taenia solium taeniasis and cysticercosis are known to be endemic in Guatemala but no studies had been undertaken in rural communities where transmission was thought to occur. Two adjacent communities, Quesada and El Jocote, in the Department of Jutiapa were selected. The former had considerably better sanitary infrastructure than the latter. The seroprevalence of antibodies detected in humans by immunoblot to T. solium metacestode glycoprotein antigens was 10% and 17% and the prevalence of intestinal taeniasis was 1% and 2.8% in the two villages, respectively. Both of these represented statis

Taenia solium taeniasis and neurocysticercosis in a Mexican rural family.

A case of neurocysticercosis in a six-year-old Mexican boy and a case of Taenia solium taeniasis in his five-year-old brother are reported. Neurocysticercosis was suspected based on clinical findings and was confirmed by computed tomography scanning. A parasitologic examination with zinc-sulfate flotation and formalin-ether sedimentation techniques was carried out on the whole family, and revealed Taenia sp. eggs in three stool samples from the five-year-old boy. The entire family agreed to undergo chemotherapy with niclosamide, but only the child passing taeniid eggs eliminated T. solium. No
