A case of urethritis due to Schistosoma haematobium with superimposed gonorrhea is described. The diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of gram-negative intracellular diplococci in the urethral discharge and of characteristic terminal spined Schistosoma haematobium ova in the urine, as well as by the favorable clinical response to treatment with the antischistosomal drug niridazole. Methyl green-pyronin (MGP) was used in a one-step procedure to stain smears of urethral discharge from 169 men. Duplicate smears were stained by Gram's method and discharge was cultured for Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The organisms were isolated from 67 specimens and intracellular diplococci were seen in 74 smears after Gram staining and in 77 after staining by MGP. Furthermore, more extracellular and intracellular diplococci were seen in smears stained by MGP than by Gram's method and the proportion of polymorphonuclear leucocytes found to contain the organisms was greater after staining with MGP.

Urethral discharge from men was diluted to give heavy and light inocula and cultured on seven different solid culture media, including two transport/isolation media, or held in three types of semi-solid transport medium for varying periods and then cultured. We studied sociocultural and medical factors in the Teso District in eastern Uganda and the Ankole District in western Uganda to discover the cause of the low and high fertility rates in these respective districts. In a study of patients attending an STD referral clinic in Lagos, Nigeria, the age distribution was similar to that seen on other parts of the world and the male-to-female ratio was 1.3:1. Prevalence and site-pathogen studies of pathogenic Neisseria were conducted in 815 homosexual men over a 12-month period. Neisseria meningitidis was isolated from more patients than N gonorrhoeae (43.1% vs 33.1%). In a double-blind comparison of two regimens of triple tetracycline (Deteclo, Lederle) in the treatment of nongonococcal urethritis, 68 (88.6%) of 70 patients treated with one tablet twice for 21 days and seen four weeks after starting therapy had satisfactory results. This paper gives a survey of urodynamic data that may be used for evaluating functional aspects of the bladder and its excretory tract. The different parameters are physically defined. Units of the International System are used in the dimensional formulae, which facilitates the establishment of relations between these parameters. The so-called urethral drag can be derived from the pressure law of Blasius. The calculation is as follows: urethral drag = vesical pressure/(maximum urethral discharge). This value is proportional to the true vesical resistance in a physical sense.

Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 58.5% of 159 patients with non-specific urethritis (NSU) using irradiated McCoy cell cultures. To assess the etiologic role of C. trachomatis and other micro-organisms in "idiopathic" epididymitis, 23 men underwent microbiologic studies, including cultures of epididymal aspirates in 16.
