BACKGROUND: Alpha 1-blockers decrease the tension, ease the tonus of smooth muscles and thus alleviate the voiding and storage symptoms of the lower urogenital tract.
OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to assess objectively the improvement of the voidings and storage difficulties in 72 randomly chosen patients suffering from Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) prior to, and in the course of 15 months of treatment with this alpha 1-blocker in a dose of one capsule of tamsulosin daily after meal.

Primary vaginal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) are rare, and are clinically difficult to differentiate from inflammatory diseases or vaginal cancer. Here, we present such a case in a 74-year-old woman complaining of fever and difficulty with urination. Pelvic examination revealed a tumor involving most of the vaginal wall, and pelvic MRI demonstrated vaginal wall thickening. A biopsy of this lesion confirmed NHL (diffuse large B-cell lymphoma), and the patient was admitted. We retrospectively studied all thirty-five children (M 6, F 29) with sacrococcygeal teratomas admitted to Siriraj Hospital between 1974 and 1999. Although an abdominal delivery is recommended for lesions greater than 5 cm to avoid dystocia, the average diameter of masses which required interventions from dystocia (n = 3) was not different from vaginal delivery (n = 27). Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) are well recognized in the pleura, but their rare occurrence at other sites has become appreciated only in recent years. We experienced a 68-year-old male patient who presented with frequency of urination and difficulty in voiding. Computed tomographic scan revealed a solid and cystic mass which measured 12 x 10 cm in the prevesical space. This tumor showed typical histopathologic features of SFT, and was immunostained positive for vimentin, CD34 and CD99. This is an extremely rare case of SFT arising from the parietal peritoneum found in the prevesical space.

PURPOSE: We measured health related quality of life in a population of normal older men for use as controls in studies of older men treated for prostate cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A statistically valid, population based sample of older men without prostate cancer completed a validated quality of life questionnaire that addressed impairment in the physical, mental, urinary, bowel and sexual domains. General and disease targeted health related quality of life was measured by the RAND 36-Item Health Survey and University of California, Los Angeles Prostate Cancer Index, respectively.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether transrectal voiding ultrasonography (TRVUS) can evaluate voiding movement in men with dysfunctional voiding.
METHODS: Ninety-nine consecutive men complaining of voiding difficulties without benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatic cancer, severe bladder neck contracture and urethral stricture received uroflowmetry and TRVUS. METHODS: Micturitional symptoms were noted and neurological examinations made repeatedly during admission to hospital of patients with clinical and neurophysiologically definite Guillain-Barré syndrome.
